Duplicate product information on ecommerce site
-
I am planning to launch an ecommerce website soon. There is no way to start with the original content for such a small startup like me.
It's pretty expensive to get original content for 1000 (around) products. You know, there are a lot of other costs such as, software licences, modules, developer, designer fees, wholesale purchases, monthly subscription for services etc...
This is what i am planning to do:
- Start with duplicate manufacturers' or amazon's product description, meta tags etc. Then gradually turn them into an original one.
I assume, google will give me a low score due to duplicate content but, if i start with duplicate content first, and then change with the original ones over the time, will this change my score?

I understand the issue, however, you are going to create a lot more issues that will need more help by going this route. It's much harder to go back and try to fix things after the fact, especially since just managing a site introduces a whole separate set of issues that will require your resources and costs. I inherited a situation like this and it's probably cost us more in lost opportunities than it would have to build it correctly. Off soap box now.
The no index is a good start, and focus on the main pages you really need to care about to get visibility for and make sure you follow best practices for those.

Hi,
Bellow is a suggestion of one approach that you can take based on your overview.
Based on the limitation as far as content and approach you can start the way you mention however there are a few additional things you need to consider:
-
don't start with content from Amazon. Amazon and ebay content have a different approach in google since a lot of people are copying that content. Try and find smaller resources even if you can say those are not better then amazon.
-
set those duplicate pages to noindex - in this way you will have the pages online for the users but not for google. You can't and won't rank anyway with those so there won't be any organic traffic and google won't flag you as a copycat. Then when you start adding additional content or transform those pages into more high and rich resources pages with custom content or with contnet from multiple sources then you can move forward and release those pages into the index by removing the nofollow.
In this way you will end up with the pages into the index in a progressive manner and that's good and you will start from day 1 (as far as pages into the index) with a good score.
It's harder to move from a site that has only duplicate content to a site that can actually rank then to move the pages into the index on a later date but with good content from day one.
My 2 cents.
Hope it helps.

Pages with near duplicate content
Hi Mozzers, I need your opinion on the following. Imagine that we have a product X (brand Sony for example), so if we sell parts for different models of items of this product X, we then have numerous product pages with model number. Sony camera parts for Sony Camera XYZ parts for Sony Camera XY etc. So the thing is that these pages are very very similar, like 90% duplicate and they do duplicate pages for Panasonic, Canon let's say with small tweaks in content. I know that those are duplicates and I would experiment removing a category for one brand only (least seached for), but at the same time I cannot remove for the rest as they convert a lot, being close to the search query of the customer (customer looks for parts for Sony XYZ, lands on the page and buys, insteading of staying on a page for Sony parts where should additionally browse for model number). What would you advise to make as unique as possible these pages, I am thinking about: change page titles. meta descriptions tweak the content as much as I can (very difficult, there is nothing fancy or different in those :(() i will start with top top pages that really drive traffic first and see how it goes. I will remove least visited pages and prominently put the model number in Sony parts page to see how it goes in terms of organic and most importantly conversions Any other ideas? I am really concerned about dupes and a penalty, but I try to think of solutions in order not to kill conversions at this point. Have a lovely Monday

Duplicate and thin content - advanced..
Hi Guys Two issues to sort out.. So we have a website that lists products and has many pages for: a) The list pages - that lists all the products for that area.
On-Page Optimization | | nick-name123
b) The detailed pages - that when click into from the list page, will list the specific product in full. On the list page, we perhaps have half the description written down, when clicked into you see the full description.
If you search in google for a phrase on the detailed page, you will see results for that specific page including 'multiple' list pages where it is on. For example, lets say we are promoting 'trees' which are situated in Manhatten. And we are also promoting trees in Brooklyn, there is a crossover. So a tree listed in Manhatten will also be listen in brooklyn as its close by (not from America so don't laugh if I have areas muddled)
We then have quite a few pages with the same content as a result. I read a post a while back from the mighty Cutts who said not to worry about the duplicate unless its spammy, but what is good for one person, is spammy to another.. Does anyone have any ideas as to if this is a genuine problem and how you would solve? Also, we know we have alot of thin content on the site, but we dont know how to identify it. It's a large site so needs something automated (I think).. Thanks in advance Nick0 -
Product page reviews issues
Hi, We've implemented pagination on the reviews with rel=next/prev, but have seen no improvements since this. An example page with reviews is here. Can you see any issues on this that would be causing the problem? Thanks!

How to get rid of those duplicate pages
Hi eveyone Just got my first diagnostics report and i got 220 duplicate page titles and 217 duplicate content pages. I know why this has happened it is because i did play about a bit and did originally have:- www.mydomainname.com/index.php/alpha Then i change the page path to:- www.mydomainname.com/alpha Then i change the page path to:- www.mydomainname.com/category/alpha So now when i get crawled i have 3x duplicate page titles, descriptions and page content. Even when i have put 301 redirects to my preferred domain path. Which is hurting my seo, right? How do i stop theold domains from giving me these bad reports? The site is on Joomla Thanks guys Oujipickle

Random Products on Homepage?
On our homepage, would having 8 randomly selected products from your catalogue (some of which contain keywords) be good, bad or have no effect on rankings? The proucts change with every refresh. Some may remain the same, but just change position.

Duplicate Product BUT Unique Content -- any issues?
We have the situation where a group of products fit into 2 different categories and also serve different purposes (to the customer). Essentially, we want to have the same product duplicated on the site, but with unique content and it would even have a slightly different product name. Some specifications would be redundant, but the core content would be different. Any issues?

Monitor site loading speeds
We all know that site loading speed is important for google ( and getting more important), and currently we are considering moving to a dedicated server. But I would like to measure pur current loading times and compare them to our competitors. I know that webmaster tools shows you your loading times, but its seems a bit random with its results, and I know analytics also now records speed, but the sample sizes seems to be too low. When I googled website load times, I got a load of different free tools but they seem to give conflicting results e.g one said that our avg kb load time was 0.02sec and our competitor was 0.01, but a different site says our sites loads in 1.7 secs and our competitor loads in 11sec (our home pages have similar total file size for our homepage. ) Also what would be useful would be a way to monitor of website loading speed to see when it slows down, so we can figure out why. Does anyone know of any good reliable programs or sites that does this?

Information being added before meta description
On the search engine results page I am finding that information has been added before my meta description - this is only a recent flaw and I've no idea how it can be caused. It is happening in the same format as you see dates sometimes before meta descriptions. This is what is actually being shown on the search engine results page. I am getting this text - Product 1 - 15 of 18 – then my meta description after that. The words 'Product 1 - 15 of 18' is in the heading at the top of the page but it is in no way interacting with the meta description. It looks like Google is confusing the words 'Product 1 - 15 of 18' with a date possibly. Any suggestions.
