Are Wordpress sites being dinged by Google? Read a few articles regarding.
-
I read a couple "SEO" related articles that sites built in Wordpress are going to be dinged by Google because Google sees Wordpress sites as simple to make and a higher potential to be "spammy".
Is there any truth to this? Your thoughts?
I do give "thumbs up" and "best answer" marks and appreciate receiving thumbs up myself...
Thanks

I will have to try to find them. I saw them about a month ago and had been meaning to post it. Do you see any out there?

Oh man.... that's really funny.
IMO..... Blogspot and bogger and sites.google.com have tons more crap sin that wordpress.
Combine the above with YouTube and Google is probably the largest host for crap, spin and infringement on the entire planet.

No google will not punish Wordpress sites specifically. The Yoast SEO pluggin for Wordpress is a great way to help manage your Wordpress SEO if you have not already heard of it I would check it out. The chap who made it is also full of excellent advice.

Thanks for your reply. I had the same thoughts but figured I would run it by my fellow experts here on seomoz

Cheesy sometimes works I just gave you one... Also thank you for your response. Interesting info regarding the anchor texts in the footer links.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a Wordpress site. They're popular and as such there will be more Wordpress sites that have penalties or are affect by algo changes, simply because more of them exist!
I do believe that it is possible, however, for poor Wordpress structure to contribute to a Panda problem. Many wordpress sites have duplicate content because the same content can be found on:
example.com/post-about-green-widgets/
example.com/category/green-widgets/
example.com/author/example-author/
example.com/tag/green-widgets/
Matt Cutts has said in the past, however, that Google is pretty good at figuring out issues such as multiple pages being created by tag pages in WP. But, I'm wondering if having this type of duplication on top of other Panda issues could be enough to push some sites into a situation where Panda filters them.
Having a Wordpress site will not cause you to get a Penguin issue as this is about the links TO the site. However, I think some sites that benefitted from making free wordpress themes got affected by Penguin b/c of anchor texted footer links.
I have several wordpress sites and will continue to build more.
(p.s. It's kind of cheezy to ask for thumbs up. It's not likely to make anyone give you one. )

Hi James
Nakul is spot on of course. Just wondering if the articles you read were speculating about Wpress as a CMS or site specifically hosted on Wordpress.com?
cheers
Michael

I highly doubt it...
WordPress powers roughly 54 percent of websites managed by a CMS, and approximately 15 percent of the top 1 million websites in the world.

Wordpress is like any other CMS. The same problem of SPAM exists with Google's Blogspot. Spam is everywhere and I don't think the Search engines are trying to use "What CMS are you using" to decide if you are SPAM.
I would not worry about getting penalized "Just because you decided to use Wordpress as a CMS/Blogging platform".
There are tons and tons of great, high authority, ranking websites made with all kinds of CMS platforms including Wordpress. So, I would say there's no merit to this.
Google's Matt Cutt's own blog is Wordpress Powered if that helps

Google Penguin 2.0 - How To Recover?
Hi all,
Industry News | | chanel27
Last year, we have engaged a SEO company who promised to bring us to the first page on Google. But after 4 months, we actually found out that he might be using doing non quality mass link building tactic and this caused our ranking for all 3 sites we given to him to drop in ranking overnight on 22nd May 2012 after the Google Penguin 2.0 rolled out. Is there anything we can do to recover?1 -

3rd Party Site Presence and Internet Marketing
An issue that I do not see discussed about much in Internet Marketing circles is the importance of establishing and developing a presence on third party sites other than through guest posting and I was wondering how much other internet marketers focus on this area and recommend this to clients. I see many people wanting hiring internet marketers basically for SEO and the KPI's on which they are judged are SEO based outcomes (higher alexa rank, number of page 1 keywords, number of top 1, top 3 keywords etc). I recently gave advice to someone who had very little time, very little money and very little SEO skills who wanted to rank in number 1 positions for their band for wedding and corporate bookings. I basically showed them sites that were highly positioned in the SERPs where they could get develop a strong online profile and how this would work better than investing 3 hours a month badly into SEO. Ultimately what businesses want is strong convertible leads and sales. For many businesses that might be better established particularly where budgets are tight through other elements whether it is Tripadvisor rankings, presence in other 3rd party sites or in an Ebay store than through SEO for their own site. Obviously for big brands with big budgets SEO is essential but as many keyword terms become increasingly competitive how important should referrals from 3rd party sites be in businesses internet marketing strategy and to what extent do you feel current internet marketing businesses identify and promote this need rather than simply working on improving ranking performance for keywords?

Google's Current Wave of Updates (4/24 edition)
Edit: Someone beat me to the punch, here is the thread: http://www.seomoz.org/q/google-webspam-algo-update-24-4-12 Let's just discuss it there. So Google has said they are doing another wave of algorithm updates that could impact anywhere from 3-5% of SERPs. I saw it here: http://searchengineland.com/google-launches-update-targeting-webspam-in-search-results-119295 http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/04/another-step-to-reward-high-quality.html Has anyone seen any changes? I've heard from a few friends that their sites are bouncing all over the place, which seems to happy a lot during these updates. We might not actually know the fallout for a few days/weeks/months. I saw a few of my smaller sites take a hit, but most of mine have stayed the same. Anyway what do you guys think? Sometimes an update like this can be a wake-up call to people who think they are doing white hat stuff but may be pushing the envelope a bit too much. Thoughts?

Why has my places ranking dropped off google?
I've recently worked for a company who up untill 3 weeks ago have shown up in the google places ranked at number 1 for the following key phrases. First Aid Training in Cornwall
Industry News | | it-ok
First Aid Courses in Cornwall
Health and Safety Training in Cornwall as well as several more... However over the past 3 weeks they have gradually dropped out of the places listing all together, and I'm struggling to understand why this might be. Yesterday I released a new website for them which has had a lot more SEO input in to the site, is this likely to have an affect on the places ranking? the website is www.insafehandstraining.com Any answers would be very appreciated.0 -
Google Products / Google Shopping
My client has a site with products a lot of which are so similar in function that for usability reasons we have combined some products on the same pages. We want to get into Google Shopping, but on the face of it the Google feed seems to want unique urls per product. I guess we could have products on the same page then have single pages as well, though that could generate duplicate content. We could also try pointing several products to 1 URL, does anyone know if this would work? Or can anyone suggest any work arounds? Justin

How long after making changes will position on Google be altered?
I'm curious as to how long Google updates take these days? I'm just getting back into SEO after 9 years and I recall back in the day there was a monthly "dance" during which page results were updated. Is it more frequent now? Thanks
