BOTW.org 50% Off Listings
-
Directories are no longer as effective anymore but I still think this is a good deal especially for a lifetime link at 50% off.
This is good for those that were contemplating this but did not want to spend $300.
Hope this helps anyone that was interested previously.

Pretty sure all directories look like they were created in 1973.
-
My suggestion based on a $300 budget would be to run a promo/contest where the client gives away something valued at $300 to the respondents. This has a better chance of going viral , generating buzz and quality backlinks as opposed to the directory route.
-
Certainly, I'm sure that's all it looks like - because that's, basically, all it is.
It was once, however, considered (even in knowledgeable SEO circles) to be a strong inbound link - indeed, one of the few directories that used to be considered worthy of the review fee (just like similarly priced Yahoo).
That's why it will still generate discussion (rather than outright derision) occasionally, and why I am playing devils advocate to some degree to spur that discussion.
Because of its history, I find it highly unlikely a link from BOTW would ever hurt a site.
-
My instant reaction to looking at that website is that it's a very poor quality directory site.
It looks like a paid directory and a low quality one.
I struggle to understand why people chose to pay for these. They hold no weight anymore.
-
I am amazed that BOTW is still milking that site. This will not help you one bit but shouldn't hurt either, I can almost guarantee you Google has BOTW listed as a site to not pass PR from and that they are just a neutered site for SEO.Not a bad neighborhood but also not beneficial for SEO.
-
So you don't think BOTW falls more into the realms of human-curated lists, than paid-for-PR directories?
(not saying I stand either side of the fence, genuinely interested to know how people feel)
-
What a waste of money. Avoid.
A lifetime link? You'll maybe soon have to pay extra money to get the link back off of that site.
This type of directory is no longer effective at all. I would highly suggest keeping your money.

SEOMoz directory list - some clarity needed FROM SEOMOZ STAFF
There are 455 directories (212 web, 188 social & 55 local) on the SEOMoz list.

Presumably they are there because SEOMoz recommends them. Yet common wisdom seems to be that web directories have negligible SEO benefit - see this recent SEOMoz Q&A discussion.
Matt Cutts advises against paid directories in this video (which >99% of them are)
In a private Q&A last month a member of the SEOMoz staff told me a link to my site from this directory, which appears on the list, was a "poor link". I think some better clarity in SEOMoz's guidelines on directories would be appreciated -- and I'd appreciate SEOMoz staff weighing in as promised when Private Q&As were ended -- especially as many SEOMozzers take most of what we learn here as near-gospel.1 -

If 50% of our links come from one source, will that hurt us?
We have a partnership with another site that we write content for and 50% of our inbound links are from them. Could this hurt us in any way?

How would one get on the Huff Po's "Around the Web" list?
On the huffington post they often have lists of links related to the article, near the bottom just before the comments. This section, when present, is called "Around the Web". See this as an example: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/linda-bacon-phd-ma-ma/health-at-every-size_b_1314339.html Do the article authors choose these links, or are they auto-generated somehow? I had a relatively small competitor appear here, so I'm wondering if there are any tricks to gett included. Thanks! Edited to add hyperlink

When is it time to buy a $100+ paid directory listing?
I have been working on a site for 11 months, everything is looking great. Apart from a small amount of highly important keywords which rank #2 to #5. 1. How will I know if I need to invest in a paid directory? 2. Will one listing be enough to make a difference? I am looking at a listing at BOTW.org. Other recommendations welcome.

Is it a good idea to have some backlinks point back to your business listing on the various directories?
During my link building campaign Ive been doing competitive research. I noticed that one of my competitors, who ranks very well organically and locally, has several back links pointing back to his business listing page on the various directories, such as Manta, Yellowbot, and so forth. Ive seen one of their profile pages with a PA as high as 65, where mine has a PA of 1. They seem to be heavily involved in spammy and shady techniques. This is why I'm asking if this is a recommended practice?

Anyone have a list of paid directories?
I want to get into some good paid directories, but every list I have found out there is either just a top ten and repeats the same ones or is a list of 500 where I know most are worthless. Has anyone submitted to paid directories that has a list of good ones that are actually worth submitting to?
