We are contemplating whether to put a blog on our site.
-
The reasons we want to put one up is obviously for SEO reasons but since we are a small business with limited resources the higher ups are worried that we will start strong but slack off. Some feel that it's worse to start and not keep up the blog as it gives an unprofessional vibe to google and other users.
I maintain that I will try to keep it up to the best of my abilities and that it's better to have something than nothing.
What do you feel and do you have any experiences in this?

Hey Stephen,
I don't really agree with you here. It's quite easy to make a calculable difference with a blog for a small business owner. Not everyone needs to be OK Cupid. Not everyone needs a following of people who read the blog daily or come back to the blog often. Some businesses, such as small (local) businesses, only need a few posts on their blog to make a difference. If there is worry about it not getting updated perhaps they can simply make more content pages on their site rather than a full-blown blog effort. Content creation doesn't always mean blog. Perhaps they can do some keyword research and look for long-tails to write blog posts about. Perhaps they could target a local keyword. These evergreen posts will continue to provide benefits for their business for years.... if the keyword research is done correctly.

What Franck says is correct, it creates user engagement and can help with the SEO. And David has also mentioned outsourcing to elance and Odesk as well as not using the dates. Also a good start.
Another thing you should do is just write a bunch of content before hand and just keep them as drafts, that way the writing won't hold you up except for maybe once a month. In addition, you have other sites like fiverr.com which is hit or miss on how good the content is but only costs 5 dollars.
But if you want a writing service that is backed by actual people and don't want to be worried about whether they speak actual english or whatever language you are looking for, there is also professionalwritingservices.biz/ and I think they cost like $10.
However, back to your original question. It can't hurt you to start a blog. It promotes engagement and makes your site dynamic, instead of static. With the addition of a blog to your site you are providing your customers an insight into your business and an opportunity for them to engage you.
If you choose to go ahead with the blog, make sure that they are socially enabled, meaning people can like it on facebook, share it on twitter, and post it on Google + (good for SEO) so that you are getting the maximum outreach with each post. I hope this helps.

I suggest you read this http://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2012/12/10/how-important-was-blogging-to-okcupids-success/
I (and many other in the industry) have admired the brilliance and marketing effectiveness of the OKcupid blog for many years. That article reveals how much work something of that effectiveness takes to create!
"The posts each took four to eight weeks of full-time work for him to write. Plus another two to four weeks of dedicated programming time from someone else on the team. It’s easy to look at an OkTrends post, with all its simple graphs and casual writing style and think someone just threw it together, but it probably had fifty serious revisions. And we threw out a lot of research that didn’t turn into good posts. "
People often have high hopes for a blog: "if OKCupid can knock it out of the park, why cant we?"
What is your success criteria? Can you put in enough time to actually hit it?
99% of people don't hit it and waste their time. You have to be pretty determined to be part of the 1% that make a calculable difference from their blog

If you're worried about it not getting updated you can always remove the dates on the posts. That way, people won't know you haven't been updating it.
Also, you can find writers on Elance and Odesk who will write great content for you for about $50-$100. Good way to keep the writing going for a cheap cost.

Hi
In my experience a corporate or product blog is always useful because it provides content for users and for Ecommerce websites it can be a place to answer users inquieries or to announce events, or to keep in touch with bloggers ans the community, etc
But you must have a content plan and try to post new posts on a regular basis. Don't put the focus on Google but on users. You can easily capture new visitors if your content is relevant.
In my experience (Ecommerce websites) blog traffic represents 5 to 12% of global visits with good engagement rate.
Hope this will help you and your team

Renaming web pages vs new web site
I am struggling with renaming a lot of my web pages because I used short form acronyms vs long form keyword page names and now my pages aren't ranking where they should be and used to be. I am weighing a whole new web site or just a massive update with new page names. I also have an old domain that 301's to the new url but the old one outranks the new one. If you search google for cheap tubes the first domain you see is www.cheaptubesinc.com (the 301'd version) when the real url is www.cheaptubes.com. I know I am getting a duplicate content penalty and when moz crawls my site they see 2X the page that I really have. I tried fixing this with canonical tags but it only helped 5 pages according the moz crawls since doing them. Since last July 4th my business has been declining and I know there was an SEO algorithm update last July 4th. I think either method of renaming the web pages with better SEO for instance cheaptubes.com/single-wall-carbon-nanotubes.htm vs cheaptubes.com/swnts.htm as it is currently. In either case, it is still an HTML 2 website done on frontpage and the question I keep asking myself is if I should just scrap the whole site and start over with a more modern format. Should I try to get a new site together with good SEO and publish it quickly vs rename and 301 a bunch of pages? What about the old site? Do I need to track the old page names and 301 them to the new ones? Any help is appreciates Mike

Blog for content
Noob here so be gentle... We have a blog on our homepage that we're using for content/SEO purposes. Does this content rank as highly as it would if it were a simple HTML page as opposed to a blogspot or wordpress from our page? In other words, are we getting as much content cred in this way as we would if blogspot wasn't affiliated? http://greatmats.blogspot.com/

New sister site VS site redesign and dangers of SEO dilution??
Hi I’ve got a site that is ranking #2 in my area for my chosen keyword but the site is in need of an expansion and overhaul its only one page at the moment and to rank for more keywords its need to be expanded. Or another option is I do own another domain and I was thinking of maybe instead of overhauling the new site launching that as a sister company aimed more at the corporate market, as my first site is a bit more alternative in domain name and content. The thing is i'm not sure how this will affect my SEO they will be on the same CBlock and be offering similar services.

I allow authority sites to republish my blog articles, which then outrank me
Hey everyone. This is my first question here, I apologize if it has been covered before. I have a health and nutrition blog [authority nutrition] that has been up since December 1st, 2012. I've managed to write quite a few viral articles which have given me a bunch of natural links and a domain authority of 49, which I think is pretty great for such a new site. Haven't done any link building and everything is 100% white hat. Getting good rankings and good traffic already, so I can't complain. My only (1st world) problem is that sometimes major authority sites (DA of 70-95) republish my content. I always say yes if they ask me first, but some of them just republish without even asking. My articles are always indexed on my blog before they get republished, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. These sites always clearly link to the original URL, but they often tend to outrank me for the keywords I was targeting in the articles. They tend to rank in the top 5, but my original article is nowhere to be found. I plan on continuing to allow these sites to republish as I get powerful links and good traffic from them, but it's a bit frustrating that I don't seem to get the credit as the original source. I've already set up Google Authorship, but it doesn't seem to help. Is there anything I can do to make sure Google recognizes my article as the original and chooses to rank my site instead of the authority site that simply republished my article?

Can having similar content on my company's two sites hurt our rankings?
We have a very successful website that has been up for a number of years (www.comellaortho.com). We rank high in the natural rankings for that site. A few months ago, we started seeing patients in another nearby city. I purchased a new domain name, www.dansvilleortho.com, and had our web company duplicate the website under the new domain name. The reality is that the content on these two sites are nearly identical. Some of the pages are different; for example, there are fewer pages on the new site. But the pages that do exist are nearly identical. My question is: Can having similar content on my company's two sites hurt our rankings? Based on what I've read thus far, I believe the answer is "Yes". However, I'm curious how bad this may hurt us. I'm not as worried about the new site (dansvilleortho.com) because our competition in that city is slim to none. But I AM worried about harming the original site/business (comellaortho.com). Which site(s) rankings may be affected by this, and if so, how bad? Thank you.

Fresh content ideas for a static site?
I have an ecommerce site. My home page is set-up just as I want it. I'm not looking to redo it or change my site to a blog. Just looking for some new, different, SEO friendly ideas or concepts to keep it "fresh".

Blog SEO Strategy
The current SEO strategy for my company blog is to include a percentage of short tail keywords in each blog post, and not to link to the main site because they are concerned with diluting the blog. I would like to change the strategy and instead use the blog to promote long tail keywords by having each entry focus on around a different long tail keyword. I would also like to use the short-tail keywords for internal linking to strengthen our important pages with keyword rich anchor text (no more than 1 link per 100 words). I would love the advice of the SEOMoz community about which strategy is more effective (or if there is something else entirely we should be doing). Thanks!
