Breadcrumbs structure
-
Adding breadcrumbs to create a hierarchy on what is otherwise a flat site.
Got the following pages which are, our main pages that rank -
Metal gates
Metal driveway gates
Metal garden gates
Metal side access gates
The Metal gates pages link off to the other pages mentioned but also contain a lot of other info
The driveway gates, garden gates and side access gate page all contain our range of gates, the three pages mentioned then have links off to their individual gates contained within each section
Breadcrumb wise, should I aim for
Home - Metal gates - Driveway gates - individual driveway gate
Home - Metal gates - Side access gates- individual side access gate
Home - Metal gates - Garden gates- individual garden gateIs that the best way to go or if I want the driveway gate page (etc) to continueto rank should I go like this
Home - Metal driveway gates
Home - Metal side access gates
etc
-
Will this not de-prioritise the page that Jon wants to rank though, as it is 3 clicks off the root in the breadcrumb rather than directly off the root?
Thanks
James

The breadcrumbs should reflect the structure of your site. It sounds like from your examples, Home - Metal gates - Driveway gates - individual driveway gate would be the way to go.

Is This a Misuse of Structured Data (JSON Recipe Tag on Collection Pages)?
I've noticed that many food blogs use the "recipe" tag to rank collection pages in carousels. For example, for the search term "Zucchini Recipe," Gaumenfreundin is in the first position in the carousel with a page that contains multiple recipes. This makes sense if the user intent is plural (e.g., "recipes") - but in the singular? According to Google's guidelines, the recipe tag is intended for individual recipes. Google even states that it is a misuse if only the ingredients are listed without the steps. So, isn't it against the guidelines to tag a collection page (even additionally) with the recipe tag? This practice is already common in the US market. Is Google aware of this and possibly tolerating it because it sometimes makes sense to present multiple recipes to the user? For example, "Zucchini Recipe" - the user might not yet know exactly what they want to cook with zucchini. Or do you think Google will take action against this practice in the future?

Do I need to worry about these 404s after changing permalinks structure?
Not long ago I wanted to change the permalink structure on a blog where the full date was included in the post urls to one where it was just /category/blog-post-title. The site is on a managed host and they setup the redirects for me and then I changed the permalink structure in the WP settings. Everything worked fine after and all old posts now redirect to the new structure. However in Google search console I can see that my 404s report has jumped from a few hundred to several thousands but it seems to be counting the urls paths to elements such as images within the old posts permalink structure eg /2012/6/some-post/some-image-in-post all the old posts themselves and their content redirects fine though. Do I need to worry about these 404s? It annoys me to see so many in my reports like that even if they aren't hurting my site 😞

When trying to sculpt an internal link structure, is there any point in placing text links to top level pages that are already in the main menu?
Does Google recognise a link in the content if there is already a link in the menu? My understanding is that Google only counts the first link it finds.

Where should breadcrumbs point
Hi, On the single product page I such breadcrumbs structure: Home > Women's Shoes > Sandals > Nike > The Name of Shoe Where should the "Nike" part point? To the main "Nike" brand page? Or to the "Women's Nike Sandals" page? At first glance the second variant is more logical, any reason why Zappos links to the main brand page, e.g.: http://www.zappos.com/hudson-amber-raw-edge-hem-short-in-indie-indie ? I'd be very grateful if someone experienced with this stuff will explain. Thank you!

Best title tag structure?
Hi, In the below example, which one do you think would work best if any. The website is called greatshoes.co.uk (fictitious) The category is 'work shoes' and a page under this cat is lets say 'Size 9 work shoes' I tend to build my title tags like this: size 9 work shoes, cheap size 9 work shoes | greatshoes.co.uk BUT I have read on here it should be more like this: size 9 work shoes < work shoes | greatshoes.co.uk Does anyone think it would make a difference when targeting for the term 'size 9 work shoes' which title tag I use. Cheers

Internal link structure for large site
I am working on a very large directory site which is undergoing a complete redesign. I am considering the internal link structure from first principles. When a site has over 100,000 pages, how do you ensure that each page is linked to from somewhere so that there are no orphans? Trying to get my head around the structure makes my brain hurt. Any tips?

Number of links in breadcrumb
Does google take the number of links in breadcrumb as a indicator to the depth of the page in the site structure? That will mean that a page with 5 links in the breadcrumb is a page very far away from the index, therefore a less important page.
