Do you know a case where product variations caused panda?
-
Would like to add 300 products to ecommerce site of which 150 products are just variations in different colors.
In this particular case there are some reaons for:
- Not writing partially unique product descriptions for each product variation
- Not setting them up as variations on one product page
So I would have several product pages with nearly identical product descriptions (proprietary description written by us), just name of color in title and description and EAN in description being different, as well as over time different user generated content showing up. Also different product images used.
I would not mind if google would not index some product variations.
Do you think I should be concerned about Panda? Do you know any website which had a Panda problem caused by product variations?
Thanks

I don't think anyone really knows how much of the text needs to be unique in order to trigger Panda.
I just finished an audit for a site that had pages that had content that was completely duplicated on another site, yet the information was all in a different order than the other site. The site was not affected by Panda. But does that mean that simply changing up the order of text is enough to evade Panda? One case like this is not enough to prove anything.
I think you need more than just a change in the meta description though.

Marie, thanks a lot for sharing this.
I will use the canoncical then as you suggest for now.
At a later point I will have unique product descriptions written for product variations.
From your experience, do you think small variation of description text is enough, or do you think that the majority of text may need to be unique. At zalando I actually saw that they implemented minimal variations in the beginning of the meta description. Just adding sometimes 2 words or changing word order.

I have done a large number of traffic drop audits for Panda hit sites and I can tell you that I have seen many sites where product descriptions have gotten them in the doghouse.
In most cases, however, the main problem is that the site is using stock product descriptions that hundreds of other sites are also using. As such Google sees that xx% of your site contains information that is exactly the same as other sites and decides that your site is of low quality and should not rank well.
In your situation though, you are talking about duplication within your own site if I understand you right. So, you are saying that you would write a unique product description and then have slight variations on each page.
I worked with one site that sold not products, but reports. The reports produced thousands of pages on the site that had 90-95% duplicated content and then just a few words that were unique to that page. I believe that the Panda issue was connected to this mass duplication.
You asked why large brands can get away with this. That is a really good question. This is a personal theory, and not something I have proven, but I am wondering if Google has some leeway in regards to Panda for brands who sell products. When I look at the site you mentioned their product descriptions are thin and yes, they are duplicate. There is almost no text on the page for some of them. These are classic things that can cause other sites to be affected by Panda.
I really think your best option is to use rel-canonical for these pages. This type of situation is exactly why Google developed rel canonical (see http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394)

thanks.
I understand that this is considered best practice.
But do you know about a case or heard about a case where this really was the likely reason for panda?
I noticed that some very big ecommerce sites such as zalando with top-notch SEO, actually publish color variations with near-identical product descriptions and without canonical or noindex. I was wondering, maybe google is more understanding in terms of content duplciation when it comes to product variations on ecommerce sites as it is generally not done for manipulative purposes.

As you describe your problem it seems to me that you will have lots of very near duplicate content pages on your site. That can cause a panda problem and is a waste of your website's power.
There are multiple solutions.
-
combine all of these color, etc. variants to a single page
-
use rel=canonical to attribute duplicates to a master version
-
write very unique descriptions for each color, etc variant, optimizing each for a different query
-
-
Use excel to concatenate unique product descriptions using different parts of the sentence as different variables.

What would cause my structured data items to drop off?
I have about 20,000 items on my Magento Site. I used a plugin to add structured data. If I use the Webmaster Tools Structured Data Tester everything shows up perfect. There are no errors on any page that I have spot checked. My total items increased to about 2500, but has now started dropping. The numbers have dropped to about 725 over the last few weeks. What can I check?

Question about duplicate listings on site for product listings.
We list products on our site and suspect that we have been hit by Panda as we are duplicating listings across our own site. Not intentionally, we just have multiple pages listings the same content as they fall into multiple categories. Has anyone else had the same issue and if so how did you deal with it?.. Have you seen a change in results/rankings due to the changes you made?

Canonical tags and product descriptions
I just wanted to check what you guys thought of this strategy for duplicate product descriptions. A sample product is a letter bracelet - a, b, c etc so there are 26 products with identical descriptions. It is going to be extremely difficult to come up with 25 new unique descriptions so with recommendation i'm looking to use the canonical tag. I can't set any to no-index because visitors will look for explicit letters. Because the titles only differ by the letter then a search for either letter bracelet letter a bracelet letter i bracelet will just return results for 'letter bracelet' due to stop words unless the searcher explicitly searches for 'letter "a" bracelet. So I reckon I can make 4 new unique descriptions. I research what are the most popular letters picking 5 from the top (excluding 'a' and 'i'). Equally share the remaining letters between those 5 and with each group set a canonical tag pointing to the primary letter of that group. Does this seem a sensible thing to do?

Is it ok to add snippet of information taken from other sites on product pages?
Hello here, I own an e-commerce website that sells digital sheet music, and I would like to enrich my product pages with short references to artists/composers related to the product, taken from external websites such as mentions, fresh news, information taken from related videos, cross-references, etc. In other words, I'd like to provide our users with a different kind of informational content that our competitors are currently not offering. We could also think of this like "providing some sort of aggregate content on product pages to enrich the user's experience by providing more information about the product". What do you think are the risks or the benefits of such an approach? And if there are any risks, how to avoid/tackle them? Any thoughts are very welcome! Thank you in advance to anyone.

Should I use rel=canonical on similar product pages.
I'm thinking of using rel=canonical for similar products on my site. Say I'm selling pens and they are al very similar. I.e. a big pen in blue, a pack of 5 blue bic pens, a pack of 10, 50, 100 etc. should I rel=canonical them all to the best seller as its almost impossible to make the pages unique. (I realise the best I realise these should be attributes and not products but I'm sure you get my point) It seems sensible to have one master canonical page for bic pens on a site that has a great description video content and good images plus linked articles etc rather than loads of duplicate looking pages. love to hear thoughts from the Moz community.

ECommerce Products substantially similar but with important differences?
Hi eCommerce gurus, We sell a number of products, electrical in nature where the unit is from a group (sub-model is probably a good description) but each has important different physical properties. An example description is: #1 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Leading Edge Dimmer, 3A C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptors allow mains GPO operated equipment to be controlled as part of a C-Bus Wireless network. The buttons on a C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptor are able to control a load connected directly to the unit and control loads connected to other C-Bus Wireless units. Also, buttons on C-Bus Wireless Wall Switches can control a load connected to a Plug Adaptor. Each button can be programmed to function as an on/off, dimmer or scene control, as well as a number of other options. The other 2 in this group are: #2 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Trailing Edge Dimmer, 2A #3 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Relay, 10A but the item description details are really the same as #1. This trips Roger's duplicate content error and so probably Google's as well. I can consolidate into one product with 'options' but then can't list the three products discretely on Google shopping etc, and currently the 'Category' is a much wider 'Wireless Automation Products' which I don't really want to sub-categorise into 'C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapters' with three items in it making it harder for people to find. I can 'Spin' the description but this seem stupid and even more so for other items I have that have 12 different derivations of the same basic product Any Suggestions?

Is it worth re-doing SEO for all existent products
We have a website and when we started, we had no clue about SEO, nor did we really understand the full extent of CRO amongst other things. We have slowly learnt that there are many changes that need to happen to our site; however...do we need to re SEO all the content that is already on the website or can we purely start a fresh with the new products we feed through? The website is: www.onlineforequine.co.uk if you need to take a look at the kind of platform we are working with.

Need help identifying why my content rich site was hurt by the Panda Update.
Hi - I run a hobby related niche new / article / resource site (http://tinyurl.com/4eavaj4) which has been heavily impacted by the Panda update. Honestly I have no idea why my Google rankings dropped off. I've hired 2 different SEO experts to look into it and no one has been able to figure it out. My link profile is totally white hat and stronger then the majority of my competitors, I have 4000+ or so pages of unique, high quality content, am a Google News source, and publish about 5 new unique articles every day. I ended up deleting a 100 or so thin video pages on my site, did some url reorganization (using 301s), and fixed all the broken links. That appeared to be helping as my traffic was returning to normal. Then the bottom dropped out again. Since Saturday my daily traffic has dropped by 50%. I am really baffled at this point as to what to do so any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Mike jamescrayton2003@yahoo.com
