Best to create a new blog as a subsection or as a new site?
-
Our company has a blog "feature" or "theme" that we'd like to publish every week at least. Should we create a subsection of our current company blog? Or should we register a new domain specifically for the feature?
The latter would allow us to do some linking back to the main website, and would probably be good in terms of future career flexibility / personal branding for whoever writes it.
Things to keep in mind? Anyone have any suggestions? Best practices? What should I do?

I agree with the previous responses that the blog should probably be a subsection. A key question to ask is whether the blog will attract links either naturally or through a link building program. A blog that stands a change of obtaining significant traffic and links, and features content that is independent from the main website is a candidate for a root level domain. However, from your brief descriiption, this does not seem to be the case with your blog

I agree with EGOL. Typically a blog is used to enhance the content and freshness of the site where the blog is located and getting links to the blog enhances the site as a whole. Sites that are exclusively blogging platforms (wordpress, blogspot, livejournal, blogger, etc.) typically make use of the USERNAME.domainname.com structure. This is the flipside of the coin that EGOL outlined: these companies want to disassociate themselves from the content on those new domains.
If you feel like your theme site is going to be far enough removed from your company that it could stand on its own, there could be justification for the new domain. It also might be easier to get linked to on design forums and resource guides if that site is its own entity. As you mentioned it would also give you flexibility in linking back to your company site.
To recap, consider how much effort the new domain can be given, who is going to own keeping it fresh, and check to see if it can stand on its own in your target market space.

If you start it on a new site you are beginning at step 1 for optimizing your new site, and because its a new site the links you point back to your main site will be of limited value.
I would keep your blog on your main domain. That way all the benefits derived from a blog are going towards improving the SEO of your main site.
If the flexibility of being able to rebrand it later is more important to you than the SEO value of the blog, then you should consider a new domain. Otherwise stick with your existing.

SEOMoz has the blog in a folder seomoz.org/blog
If you place it on a new domain the links back will have very little value unless the blog attracts links from outside of your own network of websites. And, if the blog does attract links, those links would be move valuable to the rankings of your main domain if they hit a blog within a folder on that domain.
My blog is in a folder.

Tracking New Links
Hello, We are looking for tools to be able to track new links to one of our pages. I've explored OSE, Google Search Console, ahrefs, and Majestic. I've noticed that there is a delay in which new links are found; that not all the links are reported; and that many of these tools do not provide info on which links are new (vs. old). Are there certain tools you recommend over others to track new links as they come in? Any insights or best practices on link building tracking would also be much appreciated. Many thanks!

New world order
Hello all I see many talk about it but still I feel that the conversation is full of alogans and cliches are flying around, so here goes. In the not too far distant past I could get sites climbing and getting more traffic just by gettinhg simple links from sites. do that on a monthly basis, and see results. Now it is better for end users and tougher for us SEO guys. we need quality content and strategic postings. I like the new way and the higher quality it brings. As many of you probably expieienced getting clients actively engaged is really hard and most times clients are too busy. We need the involvement to succeed, we need quality content and valid places to post (mostly blogs). My questions are most budgets are not adjusted by clients and as such it creates a problem getting qualuty content. How do you still stay profitable? How did you adjust? Do you feel that much more actuale work on clients' project is needed and as such profits are declining. How di you reacts? what are the adjustment you made Thanks Guy C

BLogs
Hello, We wanted to start hosting our own blog and was wondering (long term) if we are using embedding links to our inner pages in our blog entries if it would be a problem with Google long term? We have a designer that suggestes a custome look to match the site, and leave the wordpress plugin. Should we continue to contribute to blogger, and wordpress (free) if we are hosting our own blog? How important is a branded blog name? We were going to host it and name it xxxxxx.com/ourblog Thanks so much!!

Links from Related Sites with Low PR or semi-related sites with High PR?
Is it better to get a link from a site with lower PR but related content or higher PR but semi-related or unrelated content? For example, if I sell shoes, would a link from a PR1 or PR2 shoe or apparel site be better or a link from PR4 website that sells books be better? I'm not talking about sites with completely unrelated content, but how relevant is PR in obtaining relevant links if I am trying to raise the PR and rankings of my own site?

Ad banner from news site
Hi Everyone, I have a company calling me about adding a banner for our business on a news site for a monthly fee. The fee includes the banner and a profile page. The domain authority for the news site is high (84) but the profile page that it links to actually goes to a 3rd party site (DA=65). It is from this page that I could link back to our site. Aside from the marketing value of the 250x300 ad on a page that gets a ton of traffic, would it be better to link back to our site from the profile page on the 3rd party site or directly from the banner on the news site? I hope I've given you enough info. Best,
