Q&A Performance Improvements
-
Howdy! We've made some performance improvements to Q&A, and things should be much speedier now. If you see anything amiss, please leave a reply here or send a note to help@seomoz.org. Thanks!

OK. Here's what I can tell you. I use two different accounts in chrome. In both of them I have cleared my cache and cookies. In one account it works just fine. In the other, I get the problem.
So, when I go to this current page, http://www.seomoz.org/q/q-a-performance-improvements, and click on "reply" I get a brand new page on which to enter my reply. The url of the new page is http://www.seomoz.org/q/reply/122471/replies/new.
On that page, the javascript error console gives me this:
Hope that helps.

So sorry that I couldn't send the screenshots yesterday. I am swamped with work. I will try to get them to you later today. Hopefully really soon. It's weird because, now, as I type this it is working fine. Yet other times it doesn't. I'll document a few attempts and send it to you as soon as I can.
-
I spoke too soon.
If I clear my cache and cookies then it works just fine. However, the next time I come to the site the problem is there again (new page whenever I respond or reply, plus I can't thumb anyone up). I have to clear my cache and cookies and login again in order for it to work properly again.

From the last 30 days seems reasonable to me, but my bigger issue is with the name of that tab.
"Featured" is definitely a totally different connotation than "Unanswered". If I'm clicking on a "Featured" tab, I'm expecting something about these questions to be unusual - they're especially tricky, or especially useful, or especially contentious. Just "not having been answered" doesn't fit the idea of "Feature" in my mind. Not enough difference between the word Featured and Hot in my mind.
No catchy one-word label is immediately coming to mind, but if I think of something, I'll post it.

Good news! It is working properly for me now.
I thought it was still broken, but this time, clearing my cache and cookies did the trick.
Good job guys!
-
Same thing is happening for me too. I'm on Chrome on a PC.
-
Yes, the same thing happens for both replies and responses.

There was no place to attach an image at the Help Hub so I emailed support. Also, here is a screenshot of what I am seeing.

In addition to what Jamie said, we'd love to hear feedback about what is a good age to feature questions to help get older questions noticed, but have them recent enough that the user is still active in Q&A, still has a problem, etc.
What do people think about looking at the 50 oldest unanswered questions from the last 30 days? Or the last 60 days? Or last x many days? Any preferences?
-
Is it a bug that everything I'm seeing on the Featured Q&A tab is from 2011?
-
Q&A is generally much faster...good work.
But I have one request. Now the site gives you a new page when you type your reply. I can't see the question that was asked anymore. Usually I will need to go back and reference things said in the question when I am typing my answer. Can this be fixed?
-
Looks much better Keri. Until yesterday it was supper difficult during certain hours of the day for pages to load, specially when you tried to answer. Looks great so far.
-
Things definitely seem te be speedier than before! Great work!
-
The Q & A is one of the best things about this site, the reason why i stay here although it is sometimes dis-heartening when over 60 people look at your question like the one i posted yesterday and no one answers. But on the whole, i have gained a lot of knowledge thanks to all the experts on here.
-
Glad to hear it, thanks for letting us know!
-
Hi Falk,
To clarify, we were never shutting down all of Q&A, only the private questions. The public Q&A will still be here, and will be getting more improvements over time.
-
Looks great guys. Appears to be much speedier than before!
-
I am very happy about your decision, not to close the Q&A!

The Pros & Cons of Free SEO Reports
Are the numerous Free SEO reports that are available around the internet, where I simply put a website address in and wait for the results actually any good? I tend to stick with Moz & Semrush which takes a little time pulling all the information I need together, but many of our clients are being approached by SEO's waving these free reports at them. Should I see these reports as valid, or ignore them and only concentrate on Moz. Any views will be greatly appreciated. -Christina

1500 Domains... Where to begin? & Web Structure Question.
So, as the title says, I am stuck. I recently have been brought on as the SEO guru for a small-mid size company with the task of rebuilding their web presence. Their website is in pretty unfortunate condition. The more research I do, the farther and farther I am going down the rabbit hole of chaos. Essential the previous CEO was doing all SEO work. He purchased 1500 domains, all keyword specific. Installed wordpress on roughly 1,000 and then began pumping out content. Of the 1,000 roughly 300 of them have about 600-2,000 characters worth of content that is absolute fluff. From there the linking began. Now the content is different enough that Google doesn't seem to notice that its the SAME FREEKIN THING on each domain, but I am very concerned. The company has their main multi-page domain which has other links and sources of traffic, but in essence the previous owner created a micro link web. My advice is to cut those links ASAP and remove the previous work. At the same time, I also don't want them to lose rank. So I guess I am asking a whole slew of questions... Am I right in thinking that we have to build a bridge before we burn a bridge? Is it worth fixing up some of those other domains to have original content to try and bolster what we already have? Would it be better to combine everything into one website, or try and have different domains represent different things. For example Envato.com is an umbrella website with 8 separate websites operating under the same roof using different domains.? Where do I begin? I feel like I have started this project numerous times. I know the keywords, I know where the duplicate content is, I know the structure of the main domain, I am getting the structure of the entire link web. Lastly, any thoughts you all have would be greatly appreciated. I realistically have minimal experience in this realm. I am a a major nub. I understand SEO in theory, sorta. So I'm getting there!

Mac Alternatives for Netpeak & SEO Tools For Excel?
Does anybody know of any mac alternatives for Netpeak & SEO tools for excel? I haven't been able to find any. I just need something to pull PA & DA quickly for a list of domains and URLs. Will I just have to create something custom with the Moz API?

Issue getting total links, page & domain authority
Hi guys, I am trying to get total links, page & domain authority using the API. I am requesting the following columns: Cols=6871947673632768328204816384343597383681653687091214 { "fjid": 207343179, "ued": 43324279, "pib": 255645, "ptrr": 0.0056131743357352125, "fmrp": 8.246626591590841, "unid": 954915, "fjf": 4003651, "fjr": 0.00040067116628622016, "ftrp": 8.308303969566644, "ftrr": 0.0012189619975325583, "fejp": 9.265328830369816, "pnid": 45883246, "fjd": 2480265, "ujfq": 1277385, "pjip": 1230240, "fjp": 9.586342983782004, "fuid": 294877628, "uu": "www.google.com/", "pejr": 0.0004768398971363439, "ufq": "www.google.com/", "pejp": 9.647424778525615, "ujp": 300689, "utrp": 7.916901429865898, "ptrp": 9.487254666203722, "utrr": 0.001639219985667878, "fmrr": 0.000731592927123369, "pda": 100, "pjd": 5600882, "ulc": 1342758719, "fnid": 12165784, "fejr": 0.00016052965883996156, "ujb": 107264 } I cannot see the UPA column returned in the JSON object. Im using 34359738368 for the UPA column. I need to retrieve the three fields (page authority, domain authority and total links) in the same query. Is it possible?

Is there a way to perform a crawl diagnostics without creating a campaign?
If you wanted to perform a crawl diagnostics but your campaigns are at full capacity are you able to do this and how (or does this mean you will have to remove one campaign to make space for another)?

OSE Domains & Subdomains
Is there a compelling reason that OSE treats subdomains as part of a parent domain, rather than as a separate site? Or is this just a technical limitation? I ask because it's my understanding that Google treats subdomains more like separate domains than like parts of the parent domain. OSE treating them more like folders creates some frustrating situations when researching niches that are heavily filled with blospot and wordpress.com blogs. First of all, the domain authority in these situations is not at all indicative of the strength of the site. It also makes it hard to evaluate linking root domains at a glance, since all blogspot blogs count as one domain. So to see all blogspot sites linking you have to go to the full link list -- where each site may be listed hundreds of times -- and you can't group them because they're all considered the same domain. To be sure you when researching these niches you can just throw out domain authority as a metric, and export every report to excel where you can sort things in a way to make it easier to separate sites. But if there isn't a compelling SEO reason to have OSE function this way, I'd love to see those subdomains treated as separate sites so I can have access to all the easy to use SEOmoz metrics and layouts without the extra work. And of course if there is a compelling SEO reason for subdomains to be treated as domains, I'd love to be educated! : )

Pro Q&A Forum software?
Does anyone know of a PRO Q&A Forum software that could be used on our domain, www.curadebt.com ? This is a great way for people to earn points and help each other. We've tried other traditional forum software and it didn't work too well nor did people like to participate. Thanks!
