Replacing website, same URL, lose ranking
-
We had to do a rush job for a client and get a website up very quickly.
We had to just replace the existing files on the server, but URL stayed the same.
Now "teeth whitening glasgow" which they were number #1 for isn't coming up. Know there is still some on page work to be done - but the link profile should still remain the same?
Just looking for some advice to get back to where they were - should we do a website change of address or just verify the site in Webmaster and get all the on page done?
Thanks,
Laura

Thanks Paul - actually that has worked a treat. Everything is back to where is should be.
I'm getting a error with creating my xml site map which is frustrating as not sure how to fix that as then wanted to submit a new one.
But happy keywords all seem to be as normal!

As Matt Cutts of Google has recently said, Laura, the 301 redirects should send along pretty much all of the ranking influence of their original pages. It can take the search engines a while to index all of these new 301s and get the juice flowing again though.
Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for your answers everyone.
Paul - The domain and URLs of several of the pages are the same. I've redirected all of the old links that weren't the same to point to the new ones via 301s.
I'll leave it a couple of days then do an XML site map.
Should the redirects carry the same SEO benefit?
It's a Wordpress site so going to go through all the pages with Yoast and get them up to date.
I'll also check out Webmaster results.
Thanks,
Laura

Just to be clear, Laura - you say "...URL stayed the same".
By this, do you mean that the domain name stayed the same? Or that the actual URL of every single page on the site stayed the same? Meaning that the file names if the new pages are identical to the original ones, including their extensions? This is a critical piece of information.
If the URLs of the actual individual pages have changed, you need to have written 301-redirects for every old page to the new URLs in order to keep the value of your old incoming links. If the actual page URLs have changed and no redirects were done, you will be seeing a massive increase in 404 errors in your Webmaster Tools as well as in your Analytics.
If your individual page URLs have changed, you'll also need to make certain you've created and submitted a new xml sitemap. (But only after you've had the 301-redirects in place for a few days.)
Assuming at least your domain name has stayed the same, as you indicated, there's no way to do a Webmaster Tools change of address as the address hasn't actually changed.
Can you let us know if the actual page URLs all stayed the same?

There are so many things that could have caused this it's impossible to speculate without knowing the URL and looking at the old site which can probably be pulled up in archive.org. But yes, GWMT analysis is a good place to start.

Hi Laura,
I would suggest setting up Google webmasters and checking the crawl errors. Google will already be monitoring this so once you have set it up, the errors will already be listed. My feelings are that the urls may have changed in a subtle way eg. Www now non-www or html files now php... Webmasters will give clues. Also while your there I recommend submitting a sitemap.
Best of luck,
Dan

Hi Laura,
The link profile should be unchanged, unless you have changed the url structure. So it's important to check if all the url's of the web pages other than the homepage are also unchanged or that you have at least used redirects.
Also have a good look at the on-page optimisation for the page that ranked well for 'teeth whitening glasgow'.
Besides this there are loads of other elements that might have changed in the new site and had an effect on your rankings. (changed internal linking, content etc.)
Good luck!

How would you improve our URL structure?
Hi Mozzers, I have a question about the URL structure on our website (www.ikwilzitzakken.nl). We now have a main category with "zitzakken" (beanbags). We also have different brands, types and colours. Now we have URL's like this: <a>https://www.ikwilzitzakken.nl/zitzakken/vetsak/vetsak-fs600-flokati-zitzak/_381_w_3544_3862_NL_1</a> which seems long and not clean. Please don't look at the query at the end, we can't do anything about that in our CMS. In english this would be: https://www.iwantbeanbags.nl/beanbags/vetsak/vetsak-fs600-flokati-beanbag/_381_w_3544_3862_NL_1 How would you optimise this? We do have good rankings (this one ranks #1 for example), but I think our overall structure could be way better. Would love your thoughts about this.

Site Not Ranking for Key Term
Question for my fellow Mozers I have a ranking question that I cannot put my finger on. I have a site (visitplano.com) where the client wants to rank for the keyword "Plano". I can't say if the site was previously ranking for this keyword, but I looked into the basic SEO practices and found that the keyword is incorporated in: Domain Title Content There is a lack of internal linking and anchor text within the content External links - 1,558 DA - 46 PA - 55 Currently, the website does not rank for the keyword "Plano". Could someone shed some light on why they aren't ranking or what I may be missing? I would greatly appreciate your help.

Website redesign and it's impact on ranking
Hey Everyone, I have had a website in place for over 7 years and I am now at the point where I need to implement a redesign in order to sell our product more effectively. -URL's will stay the same
On-Page Optimization | | Justin45
-Content will change but be very similar page-to-page
-Title & Meta tags will remain the same I'm planning on taking the site from a non-backend site to a wordpress site so the navigation will change. Does anyone foresee that this change will have any dramatic effect on site ranking? Thank You!0 -
Are blog pages hurting rankings?
Let me begin by saying that I have a Wordpress site with a customized theme. When I view my webpage's crawl diagnostics, it keeps showing a lot of Warnings. There are 89 pages with Too Many On-Page Links and 90 Pages with a missing meta-description tag. The problem is that the pages are listed as follows for both errors: Blog Page 10 Blog Page 11 Blog Page 12 Etc. There are no other pages, just the blog pages (which include about 7 posts/page). How do I eliminate the too many links without deleting them from individual blog posts, and how do I add meta-description tags to blog pages without duplicating the tag for /blog? Thanks! | | | | |

Removing old URLs from Google
Hello, I am sure that this question has been asked many times, but I am still not sure what to do about the following: Our site's URL structure has changed a few times in the past few months. Recenty, we have changed our URLs to become more SEO friendly. However, Google has indexed the old URLs as well. To give an example: The following page in our website shows the following URLs in Google Webmaster Tools: Confúcio e Seus Ensinamentos
On-Page Optimization | | Tev/artigo/68_38/2/as_religioes_iv_confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos/
/aula/14_6132/vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos/
/aula/1_14_6132/vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos/
/aula/_14_6132/Vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos/
/aula/ensino/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos/ The correct URL is the last one. What should I do about the other ones? Almost all the pages in our website have this problem. We have redirected the old URLs to the new ones, but is there anything else we should do? We were asking Google to remove them, but Google has informed us that it has reached the limit. Please advise us on waht we should do. We have removed the old sitemap with the old URLs. What else must we do? Thank you very much.

ECommerce URL's
This is based on a clothing retailer, eCommerce site. In an effort to reduce the length of our product names, we are considering removing terms like long-sleeve, short-sleeve, etc., but leaving that information in the URL. Now, the concern is that we would lose some traction in the SERP's if those descriptive words are left out as the product name is also our page title. Then I think keywords as broad as long-sleeve shirt wouldn't serve us well anyways. One idea we have is that the alt tag on the product image could still display the longer product name that would include long-sleeve, etc. thus having the keyword on the product page. Any ideas or suggestions? Hope this is clear. Seems redundant from a user standpoint to state long-sleeve, etc. in every product name. Thanks - your answers are always so helpful!

Ranking Issues Recently Popping Up
We have a site that based on your research tools, holds its own in almost all aspects in regards to # of links, # of different linking domains, quality of links, mozrank, moztrust and all that stuff. Compared to our top competitors, we do very well based on your tools via our campaign monitor. The issue is we seem to be dropping like crazy every month in our rankings and traffic despite this fact, and we can't get our head around the cause. I do have a couple of ideas, and I wanted to run them by you guys to get your opinion. Domain: bonitaj.com My Thoughts On Possible Issues... 1. Text Content & Panda Update I know one of the big things with the panda update was quality of content. I know one thing we have for sure is a lack of "text-based" content. Sure, we have home page, main cats, sub-cats and product pages, but they are mostly just windows into the product pages, and don't have a whole lot of good copy. THIS IS MOST EVIDENT ON OUR PRODUCT PAGES, where each product page is loaded with content, but only 3-4 very short paragraphs of text. Do you think this is hurting us? THE ONLY ISSUE IS THAT our competitors also don't have a whole lot of text-based content on their pages. 2. Too Many Category Pages & Same Products Featured Somewhat on them I think another problem may be that on each category page, we do have a lot of the same products featured. I don't think its crazy duplicate content or anything, but I do think that back in the old days we got a little crazy with creating "niched out" category pages that pretty much feature the same products as some of the more important and base category pages. Do you think this is hurting us? I've pitched a solution to this that involves trying to tone down the amount of sub-cats we feature that were originally geared towards attracting long-tail traffic. In the end that really isn't working anymore anyway, so maybe we're spreading our site thin by going to deep with some of these niche category pages? 3. Lack of a sitemap? We used to use an xml sitemap, and really don't anymore. We have nothing on file with google webmaster tools. I've recently read in one of your blog posts that a simple thing like adding a good sitemap could help our 600+ page site or so get crawled a bit deeper allowing more pages to rank? IN THE END, MY QUESTION IS SIMPLY, IF THERE IS ONE OR TWO THINGS I CAN DO TO GET OVER THIS HUMP, WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST?
