Does having affiliates hurt seo?
-
one of my clients has a TON of affiliates out there building links back to his site all with the ?ref=AFFILIATENAME tracking string
does google understand this and not count these links or is there a way to nofollow all links with this tracking string?
just wondering how big companies rank well and still have thousands of affiliates building links on all kinds of properties using all kinds of methods
thanks

i doubt google could ever do anything about it because so many legit sites get 50%+ of their business from their affiliates
Bit of an over-estimation, but 2 years ago I would have agreed that they wouldn't do it. Today I'm less sure.

thanks mat
i doubt google could ever do anything about it because so many legit sites get 50%+ of their business from their affiliates - and seems like every website has a banner of some sort linking to another site as an affiliate so i think a large percentage of the actual internet is affiliate marketing based
im sure more sites exist for the sole purpose of making an affiliate buck than actual company sites - literally every blog makes money as an affiliate in some manner or another
but thanks for the answer - i will do the site: search now

I don't believe that affiliate links in themselves cause issues on a technical level. However lots of links with ref=affiliatename could potentially cause a canonicalisation issue is they have not been redirected properly. A quick search to see if any have been indexed (site:sitename.com inurl:ref=) will tel you.
Assuming that is OK you should be fine. It is worth remembering that you cannot nofollow incoming links anyway. You would need to get the sites to nofollow the links as it is done in the source of the link.
However... strictly speaking affiliate links are paid links. Google rules state paid links should be nofollowed. Affiliate links don't usually seem to be no-follow (even the aff networks don't add the nofollow attribute in the code they provide), however they probably should be. Google could well crack down on this at some point.

Affiliate links and parameters creating duplicate page titles
Hi, we have an affiliate system and use rel=**canonical **to canonicalise them to the right link. Still, we see those links creating duplicate page titles, in Moz crawl and in Google search console. How are we supposed to treat those links so they do not create duplicate content? Thanks for your help!

Best way to start affiliate marketing a new mens magazine website?
I have just started up a new mens magazine website featuring articles, videos, sports news and photos to help drive traffic to the website. I write all the articles myself and do the social media updates in my spare time. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on the best way to start doing affiliate marketing for a new website? I was inspired to do this by successful internet marketers who make a passive income off their websites. So far I have added Amazon and William Hill as affiliate links as I think my target market will be looking for these types of product links. Also, for anyone who has experience in this, how long it taken for your blog to become successful and make money? Many thanks, Alex

Affiliate links and Panda
Hello all, my question relates to the recent panda changes and the subsequent impact on pages with affiliate links. I have a hub of pages on my website talking about parcel delivery. Each page has unique, quality content and up until about 3 weeks ago they were starting to achieve strong rankings. We then decided to add some affiliate links (just 3) on each of the 5 parcel related pages we have. The rankings for each of these pages have tanked completely; rather than top 20, we're now outside of the top 100 for all of them. When we noticed this we masked the link, changing it to domain.com/index/affiliate; we also no followed the link. Alas this has had minimal effect in restoring the rankings. What i'm now thinking of doing is removing the affiliate links from the parcel landing pages altogether and instead providing users with a no followed link to another page within the site upon which we would have the affiliate links. This page would also be no indexed as well. My question is: Is this a good idea and if so will it restore my previous rankings over time, or have those pages (as a result of the affiliate links) been permanently down graded?? Any assistance would be gratefully received!

I already have a great ranking.... Am I jeopardizing my position by putting outbound links to affiliate sites? Also would a nofollow tag on an affiliate link work? I understand Google is fast changing - so what is the latest advice on this for Spring 2011? Thanks a lot
