Most significant link building factor

Am I right in thinking the most important link building factor is the number of unique linking root domains? Multiple links from a domain won't help me so much?

One link from the Pope's site will be worth 10,000 links from spam blogs.
Multiple links from a domain won't help me so much?
Again, it depends upon the domain. But, if you have multiple links from a very high quality site it will benefit you more than one link from that site. And, if those links hit multiple pages on your site then each of those pages will get measurable benefit... and that benefit, I believe, will flow through your entire site.

It's true that number of unique linking root domains is important. It's true that multiple links from a domain won't help as much as links from new domains.
But there are a ton of metrics that matter - relevance, trust, authority, anchor text, etc. So I'm not sure "unique linking root domains" is the single most important factor. It's definitely important, though, and correlates well with Google rankings: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/announcing-the-march-mozscape-index

I don't think relevancy is crucial. a car site could be linking to your pets site because you sell pet carrying cases for traveling with your pet. It's too difficult for Google to definitely determine relevancy and discount the value of a link. Of course you don't want all links from sites that have nothing to do with your niche!
-
Always remember that "relevancy" is a vital part of unique linking root domains.
If you have 1,000 links on 1,000 different "car" related domains, you might find it hard to rank your "pets" website.

This should help you:

All things being equal, more domains is better than more links. But, I agree with Kevin, it really depends on the trust and authority of the domains. Two links from an authoritative and trusted site are going to be worth a 100 low value domains, perhaps more.
-
I would say (more importantly) the weight of those links (not the necessary number). Multiple links will help from one site, but the value is probably greatly diminished unless those pages are popular (or have a high 'pagerank').

How to explain to a client that link building doesn't get fast results?
I started doing link building for a client 1 month and a half ago. This includes submitting to free directories, social bookmarking sites and also writing and submitting articles to free article websites. Since I only use free and non-paid websites, it doesn't get approved instantly and many links I submitted are still pending review. Now the client is getting all nervous because he doesn't see a ROI regarding my work! I tried to explain to him that link building is just a piece of the cake and especially using non-instant approval free directories, it can take up to several months for each link to be listed (if listed), so it doesn't have instant results! I'm also trying to convince him that he needs to create more engaging content on his website, and also invest more on social media in order to get non-solicited links. I'm really annoyed with this. Can you SEO guys help me explaining to him why he doesn't see a great ROI with just 1 month and a half of link building and why his website's Moz Rank and Moz Trust decreased and that's normal to happen!? Thanks!

Should I build links to wordpress category pages?
Hi guys, I'm working on http://www.top-10-dating-reviews.com and planto build links to the category pages - is that the best strategy for a comparison site like this? This is a wordpress site and I read that category pages should be no indexed is that the case? If so then obviously I'd be wasting my time building links to these pages as google wouldn't index them anyway. Any advice on the best strategy for link building would be much appreciated!

Links Building from contractors on eLance.com
Hi, I never hire somebody to create link building to point to our sites. On eLance.com you can hire a SEO contractor to build link our your domaine. New to SEO, is worth it to do so? Is there things I should should be careful about? Things I need to clarify before hiring somebody? Things I need to confirm or ask before hiring such contractors? Most of those ''SEO Expert'' are from India and some have perfect ratings on this site. I have 2 eCommerce sites and we only have a average of 3 sales a day. I can't afford price companies are asking in North America. For a lot less, eLance maybe the solution for our home base business. What is your advice on this? Thank you BigBlaze

Current best link building practise
Hi guys, Just an open discussion. I don't want to be told to use directories or just 'guest blog'.. What is the best method you are currently using? A lot of my competitors are using older techniques for quick wins but we're wary to do that due to the long term consequences... Thanks

Multiple link building strategy for multiple clients
We deal with about 200 clients for a series of websites. We create a number of articles articles per site per month. A company we used to do link building for the websites it turns out were doing a lot of spinning which has been hard hit by the new penguin update. I'm actually really happy about it as it means we can now do some legitimate SEO on their sites. Any ideas of what the best strategy would be for this amount of sites which we are already creating shareable content for?

Do you consider it risky to hire outside firms to build links?
Based on what happened to JC Penny do you think there is a significant risk of penalties if you have an outside firm build links for your site? For example they could buy some links and get caught or engage in black hat tactics without our knowledge. Is there anything that can be done to minimize any such risk?

Stop Building Links During Reconsideration Request?
We had a message in webmaster tools to say our site had 'unnatural links' pointing towards it. I investigated and found a number of sites where we had uploaded articles, containing links, had been de-indexed. As such we have suffered a few drops in rankings. I have submitted a reconsideration request and I'd like to get on with recovering any lost ground. However, I am wondering whether it's best to cease any link building activity whilst the reconsideration request is processed. Please do let me know your thoughts and experiences on continuing to build links after submitting a reconsideration request.
