Linking back to a high authority site
-
I have an odd situation. One of our most powerful links comes from a not-for-profit whom we have an advertisement with. That ad gets us half of our business. Recently, they slipped for the term that got them the traffic that flowed to our site. I was thinking of linking back to that page to boost them up a bit. Their page is a deep page on a high authority domain with only a few links. I am an authority site for my niche. I'd like to boost them up without diminishing my rank for other related terms. I'm willing to consider linking to them from my homepage, blog or link page. To play it safe I could just link build to them from outside my domain. Can I just link to them and its not a big deal?

I'd buy it.

If I compiled all of EGOL's answers and tips, I could have one of the most awesome resources ever!
-
That's some great advice. I can see that the quick win is something of a losers strategy. Content is king.
-
If you go for the short win the long win becomes more difficult because you fortified their position.
Right now you are getting sales traffic from that page. I'll bet some of the people who find that page are looking for information. So, make some great content that is informative about same subject and buy a second ad on that page.
Then on that informative page have house ads for your sales pages.
-
That's why you're an Oracle. Thanks for that. I was looking at a short win and that is the long game.
-
Why link to them? Just beat them.
If half of my biz was coming from an ad page on another domain that is slipping... and I was running an authority site in the niche..... I would be producing some fantastic content on that same topic for my own site. I'd be willing to put a lot of time and money into that content.
I would be trying to kick their butts.
-
Thanks for the responses,
I should add that it is a page of ads. They have 1200 or so links to their root and 9 to this page. I guess I know to play it safe i should work this one from outside but, it is a big deal to get that business back.
-
I think you have the right ideas in mind. I would start with the link building outside of your site. Then after awhile if that doesn't work I would do a blog post on them or something. I wouldn't link to them from the home page.

Hi there
It's a bit of an odd circumstance and I'm not sure whether you should do this. Reciprocal links can look suspicious to search engines, but putting aside that issue for the moment, let's look at the SEO impact.
If you link to the site from your own website, it shouldn't effect your rankings. If the site is high authority as you say it won't be a problem. Problems can occur when your website is linking out to spammy or penalised domains, but this shouldn't be the case here.
If you're planning on linking to the site, I'd advise you to do so in the most contextual way possible, to avoid it looking like a link designed to pass PageRank (which, really, it is - hence my hesitance to say "go for it"). If you can reference the non-profit organisation, highlight who they are, what they do and how you two have collaborated together on projects, then you're reciprocal link should look A-OK.
It's an odd one because I'd always advise not to create or earn links for the sole purpose of passing PageRank or SEO value. On the face of it, this is what it looks like. But if you consider that your link may help to boost the site in the rankings and in turn your referral traffic, which is a considerable amount of your business, I can certainly see the reasoning, put it that way.
What I'd say is that if you're going to do it, do it right and just as you would when creating any content. Give detail, user value and pull on the experience you've had together. It might end up being a piece of content that goes a long way towards building legitimacy and brand trust, which would be great. I'd also add that your link may not be enough to improve the ranking of the site, which means its all the more reason to make sure it looks like a real bit of content.
Hope this helps

As long as you are linking out to relevant content, it is perfectly fine to be cross linking between sites (as long as you are not doing like a site-wide footer link or something spammy).
Search engines do not find it odd when two sites that are relevant to each other link to each other, because that appears natural.
Hope this helps.

Redirecting dofollow, high-domain-authority links from one site to another: good idea?
I have two sites that offer help for freelance writers. The first gets almost no search traffic and is very low priority for me. The second is my main priority and gets substantial search traffic. The low-priority site has a significant number of dofollow backlinks from high-domain-authority sites. Is it a good idea to 301 redirect these links to similar/related posts on my high-priority site? Would this potentially boost the SEO of my high-priority site? Thanks for any help!

Accidentally generated navigation links that point to American site from Australian site.
Somehow we ended up getting hundreds-of-thousands of links coming from our .au (Australia site) to our .com (America site). We believe that something happened during a change that turned a handful of our example.com.au navigational and footer links into back links pointing to example.com and sub-domains of the American version. We are currently fixing this, but we are wondering if this could potentially be problematic in terms of a penguin penalty due to an unnatural linking campaign or back link scheme. Could this error create major problems for us in the near future if we have corrected the issue? Your thoughts are welcome! Thanks!

Links from highly relevant but low Domain Authority sites: Yes or No?
We're reaching out to companies that we have a business relationship with (past and present) to find out if they would be interested in linking to us.

All are obviously in the same industry so highly relevant. But some of the sites are low in Domain Authority (with scores of about 15-25).
Should we also ask these sites -- or avoid them?0 -
High PR Web 2.0 sites
Hello, I was wondering if you could provide some advice on which are the best Top 20 high pr web 2.0 properties for content besides wordpress? Whilst i do intend to use them to further improve my SEO campaign I also intend to use readable content, that is to say, content that i have written and i feel is worthy of being read by interested parties. What are the top 20 to look at that would benefit an SEO campaign if used correctly (without abusing or being spammy). I can see lots of crappy ones out there but they all look spammy to me and im not really liking that.

What makes a good back link profile ?
Hi Now forgive me as I know this question has been asked on this and other sites thousands of times over, but since the recent algorithm changes to Google what would you consider to be A good backlink profile for a regional window, doors and conservatories firm For example looking at a leading SEO firm in the UK and in detail at one of their clients – the backlink profile for a team of 40, is nothing better than an experienced freelancer could achieve. For example they are mainly directory listings, css design galleries or comments on blogs not relevant to the target site What should this contain, but please bear in mind there is no budget to develop games, widgets to gain viral back links Most peoples responses are just great quality content, which although the correct answer they do not go into any detail on what form this should take, where it should reside, how people will find it etc I was thinking of the following Web Directories - if yes - which ones should I target and which ones to avoid (UK) Competitions - Is this a good means of gaining backlinks from the likes of loquax, prizefinder etc - or is it just a short term boost Forums - Answer questions on the likes of DIYNOT with the web address in my signature response Suppliers - Get a link from suppliers and the likes of Fensa Local Search - Yelp, Qype etc Social Media posts - Facebook, Google+ and Twitter any thing else I have missed?

Why do internal, fake profiles on revebnation sit so high in their linking profile?
I was researching the link profile of Reverbnation to understand where they get most of their links from and a number of these fake reverbnation profiles showed up that seem to be about drugs- is this spam? Here are some examples: http://www.reverbnation.com/fan/tramadolfordepression http://www.reverbnation.com/page_object/page_object_bio/fan_1340318 There are about a dozen of these on their site. Super curious and would love any feedback or knowledge that may be out there! Thanks

Interesting link to a competitors site
I recently found a very interesting link to two of my competitors sites. The companies are number 2 and 3 in Google for my targeted keywords (for some reason Wikipedia is number 1) and are both linked from the home page of this site. I don't want to leave a link for linkers site because I don't want them to be able to see that I'm snooping on them but, here is the scenerio: The site that they are linked from is a .org site. It is basically our targeted keywords in a .org. Something like bluewidgets.org. At the very bottom of the home page are some tabs, you click the first tab and it opens about 20 new tabs, when you click any of those 20 tabs it displays some text at the bottom of the page. This text is of no value to visitors, it is obvious to me what is happening here. Both companies are linked with targeted keywords in the anchor and title text. I'm wondering if I should also pursue a link from this page. I know there is value in a .org link but this site seems to be built to link to those two sites. Anybody else ever run into anything like I'm describing. Should I post a link to this site?
