Combining two exact match domains under brand name

I run two websites that sell basically the same product which we make ourselves but to two separate audiences. I've made my living off them for the past 6 years or so. I used emd's in both cases to rank for my main search terms. We dropped a few places last October but not too bad. I was thinking of combining the sites under one brand name hoping that they would rank better combined. Both sites have similar link profiles but with some links unique to each. For instance, I buy a yahoo directory listing for each site but each site has some unique product reviews on blogs. Is this a good idea or am I better off leaving them separate?

Thanks EGOL, Fantastic answer. I'm looking for a new foundation to work from and would love to work hard on just one site. I'm pretty sure the sites will work best together in the long run but, I sure don't want to mess up what I already have.

I would be a bit cautious.
If your domains were just a couple years old I would say "go for it". However, I had an EMD that was established in the SERPs and held #1 for ten years. I moved it to a better domain with a 301 redirect and lost the #1 ranking. This was a site with an established audience and was getting a few thousand domain queries per month.
I didn't get the #1 back until the new domain was recognized and accepted by its audience and again getting a few thousand domain queries per month.
In my opinion, the more established your domain the greater the risk of the move.
Your situation is a bit difference since you will be uniting two sites and they might each bring assets to the merger. If there is very little overlap between their link profiles you might gain a lot by merging. But if there is a lot of link overlap then you merge them and the new site is not much stronger than either of them as freestanding sites.
I place a lot of value on the mindset of the webmaster because that determines how hard you are willing to fight. If you are doing this as an offensive move and have a plan for big promotion of this new combined domain then I would say that this might work out for you.
However, if you are doing this as a defensive move because you are getting your ass kicked everywhere, I'd say that the writing is on the wall for the future and you better get to work competing against your enemy.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. To tell you the truth I do have a lot of quality content that didn't quite fit on either site well that I could use as the base content for the branded site.

I guess the safest, fastest, most gradual way to do it would go like this:
Go ahead and get your brand site up and running as a stand alone site on a different host with different registration info. Work on creating content and a link profile as separate from the others as you can. Set up a google+ profile verified for that domain and begin ramping up social media efforts for it.
Then, start pumping good content onto your emd's that gradually link out to numerous other quality resources, including, once in a while, the quality content you're putting on your brand domain.
With this method, you'll hope to get traction for your brand domain before your emd's lose value (if they do). But if the emd's do lose value before they can pass full 301 juice to your brand domain, your brand site is already building a solid base for itself.
On the other hand, the fastest way to deal with it would be to create your brand site and then to go ahead and 301 each page from your emd's to the appropriate page on your brand site and get the benefit of those two sites 301ing to the brand for as long as that benefit lasted.
With this method, you'd certainly expect to get traction for your brand domain before you emd's lose value (if, in fact, they did), but you'd lose out on the benefit of having those two emd's in the serps at the same time--for the period of time that they didn't actually loose value (if they did--but you'd never be able to actually determine that.)
As the executive decision maker, you get to make that call.

Domain Name redirection to new Domain Name - VS - Transfering Domaine Name from account 1 to account 2
Hi there! Thanks for your time 😉 I have a new cutsomer that bought his domain name via WIX and your know... WIX sucks huge time for SEO. Basically, we want to do SEO outside of WIX. But I am not sure HOW I should proceed. I think I have 2 options: OPTION 1- We transfer the domain name from WIX to a new hoster. But we will lose 7 days during that, lose prospects while the website is in maintenance and we might lose the little bit of ranking we have on the way. BUT! ONCE Everything is done with the transfer, we will be able to operate our SEO campaing with a Domain Name that as 15 domain authority, links, little bit a ranking, etc. OPTION 2- I just buy a new domain name. I build the new Website on it and then use the SEO juice from the old domain name with redirect to push the new domain name. Like this, I won't lose any opportunities. BUT I will have to restart the SEO as new... Any tips or ideas for me? Maybe there is an OPTION 3 that I don't know about.

Why is my domain authority still 1?
I changed the domain of my website from www.vanillacrush.co.uk to www.carissamay.co.uk at the end of December and yet my DA for carissamay is still 1. As advised, I set up a 301 redirect from VC to CM which seems to be working fine. However when I check on redirect detective it tells me I also have a 302 set up. Exact match .org Ecommerce: Reason why internal page is ranking over home page
Hello, We have a new store where an internal category page (our biggest category) is moving up ahead of the home page. What could be the reason for this? It's an exact match .org. Over-optimization? Something else? It happened both when I didn't optimize the home page title tag and when I did for the main keyword, i.e. mainkeyword | mainkeyword.org, or just mainkeyword.org Home Page. Both didn't help with this. We have very few backlinks. Thanks

"sex" in non-adult domain name
I have a client with a domain that has "sex" in the domain name. For example, electronicsexpo.com. The domain ranks for a few keywords related to the services offered. It is an old domain that has been online for over 10 years. It ranks well for local keywords. No real SEO effort has been made on this domain, so it is rather a clean slate. I am going to be doing SEO on this site. Will the fact that the word "sex" exists in the name have any sort of negative consequence. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING adult related or pornographic on this site. I would think that search engines are sophisticated enough to differentiate, but would potential customers with things like parental filters be blocked from viewing content? Is this hurtful in anyway? If so, would I be better off changing domain names? TIA

Microsite as a stand-alone site under one domain and sub-domained under another: duplicate content penalty?
We developed and maintain a microsite (example: www.coolprograms.org) for a non-profit that lives outside their main domain name (www.nonprofit-mainsite.org) and features content related to a particular offering of theirs. They are utilizing a Google Grant to run AdWords campaigns related to awareness. They currently drive traffic from the AdWords campaigns to both the microsite (www.coolprograms.org) and their main site (www.nonprofit-mainsite.org). Google recently announced a change in their policy regarding what domains a Google Grant recipient can send traffic to via AdWords: https://support.google.com/nonprofits/answer/1657899?hl=en. The ads must all resolve to one root domain name (nonprofit-mainsite.org). If we were to subdomain the microsite (example: coolprograms.nonprofit-mainsite.org) and keep serving the same content via the microsite domain (www.coolprograms.org) is there a risk of being penalized for duplicate content? Are there other things we should be considering?

What is best practice SEO approach to re structuring a website with multiple domains and associated search engine rankings for each domain?
Hello Mozzers, I'm trying to improve and establish rankings for my website which has never really been optimised. I've inherited what seems to be a mess and have a challenge for you! The website currently has 3 different www domains all pointing to the one website, two are .com domains and one is a .com.au - the business is located in Australia and the website is primarily targeting Australian traffic. In addition to this there are a number of other non www domains for the same addresses pointing to the website in the CMS which is Adobe Business Catalyst. When I check Google each of the www domains for the website has the following number of pages indexed: www.Domain1,com 5,190 pages

Redirecting One Page of Content on Domain A to Domain B
Let's say I have a nice page of content on Domain A, which is a strong domain. That page has a nice number of links from other websites and ranks on the first page of the SERPs for some good keywords. However, I would like to move that single page of content to Domain B using a 301 redirect. Domain B is a slightly weaker domain, however, it has better assets to monetize the traffic that visits this page of content. I expect that the rankings might slip down a few places but I am hoping that I will at least keep some of the credit for the inbound links from other websites. Has anyone ever done this? Did it work as you expected? Did the content hold its rankings after being moved? Any advice or philosophical opinions on this? Thank you!

Targeting combination of keywords
Hi, On our website Vliegtickets.nl we are now targeting one combination of keywords " flights + destination". We are working on a new website and we are rewriting texts for the launch. Our idea is to target again on the combination " flights + destination", but also target other combinations. Our intention is to have a first introduction text targeted on " flights + destination" and have lower parts of texts (descriptions) targeted on the long tail, with use of keywords like flight / fly to / cheap tickets to etc. Our page will be divided like this: 1. introduction text max 150 words (h1 + h2) targeted on " flights + destination"

3. box 3. Question: target on new generic keywords + combination of destination What is your point of view on box 3? Is it the right way to target a broader range of keywords?
