Duplicate content
-
Hello Seomoz team,
i'm french and so my english is not very good ;-).
I work for a brand site and we publish content about our products.
The problem is : as a brand site, many sites that sell our products, copy our content. And we have duplicate content. And since these sites have worked SEO, they put in place rel canonical tag.
as a brand, how to avoid being accused by Google duplicate content?
tanks for you answer. I hope it's clear.
Take care
Denis

I sometimes tell myself that because I am the official website of the brand, I should have Authority for Google. What do you think?

The canonical tag is a really important subject.
I don't trust it... search engines have not announced EXACTLY how it works that I have seen.
Does the first-indexed copy of content with the canonical tag get search engine exclusivity for that content? I would like to be really sure about that.
What if I publish new content on a weak site with the canonical tag and then days later a more powerful site sees my content, grabs it, and applies the canonical. My weak page on a weak site might take several days to be indexed but the strong site can be crawled many times per day. It it works this way then this tag has huge danger for webmasters with new sites or sites that are not crawled very often....?
.... or maybe I don't understand it?

If you want to take drastic measures you can tell them to change their content or they cannot continue to sell your products and you will be suing them for copyright infringement. Extreme, yes, but also effective.
A less extreme way is to make sure Google indexes your content first when you put it up. Immediately put a link to it in a tweet and facbeook share. Have a canonical tag declaring your URL to be the original. If you get indexed first, all the duplicates that follow will be the copies and you will be fine.

Writing <200 word pieces of content in a 7.5 hour day
My employer has a content writer who is currently working on writing unique descriptions for many pages, on the order of around 150-200 words per piece of content. A recurring theme in this content is to write a list of features such as "it does X, X, X, X, X and X", which can sometimes happen a couple of times during the content and takes up a decent chunk of wording. This content does not require in-depth research over and above reading the about us page of some sites and looking at what services they provide, as well as some quick details like their payment and delivery methods etc. As well as that the writer also writes the Meta Description and then uploads these to a CMS. There are no other tasks. Considering the writer is doing this 5 days a week, 7.5 hours a day, and isn't getting paid a poor or trainee-type wage, what would you say would be an acceptable amount to achieve on the average day? The current average works out to around, or slightly less than 8 of these pieces of content each day. Thoughts?

How much duplicate content counts as duplicate content to Google?
Hi everyone! I've had a look through some duplicate content posts and I can't see the answer to this query, so I thought I'd ask in case someone could help. I've been looking at a website that competes with the site that I work on. They have profile pages containing content that has been copied and pasted straight from the suppliers' websites. Their pages have all their own code framing the content, which is diluting the concentration of duplicate copy. How much duplicate content can a page have before it gets penalised or ignored by Google? Any suggestions very gratefully received 🐵

Press Releases and Duplicate Content on Event Related Site
I have a site that lists events. I ask those submitting events to submit original content if possible, but frequently they submit press releases which are already published elsewhere. I rewrite some of the press releases, but do not have time to rewrite every press release that comes my way. I want my users to get a comprehensive list of events, but I don't want get a penalty for duplicate content. What is the best solution?

Who gets credit for content
Does it really matter if somebody takes your content changes it slightly and republishes it? This is my original article on history of house paints which was also published on ezine in Feb. and from google alerts I discovered this page http://www.franklinpainting.com/blog/home/a-brief-history-of-house-painting/ a minimally modified version. It is not easy to create content so these folks just copied and made a blog post. Their are now many versions of this on the web..who wins?

For a consumer facing blog, how often do you recommend updating content to develop good rankings? I understand that it's really dependent upon the niche/competition, but what are some best practices? Content is expensive. Thanks
