HTML to Wordpress - a good idea?
-
I have an HTML site that is 12 yrs. old and ranks well in Google. I want the more user friendly Wordpress format to update content myself. Should I, and how do I make the transition. Thanks.

Hey Mark
Good idea? Yep!
Basic process;
- Plan out the structure of your new site.
- Map the old pages to the new pages.
- Create the new site on a development or local server (some folks will build it right on the main domain, but just keep it hidden - I don't recommend that). If using a dev server, use your privacy settings and "discourage search engines from indexing the site" - you don't want the dev site indexed!!
- Prepare your 301 redirects (as Kade suggested, I actually don't think you should keep your URLs the same at all - now's a good time for improvement).
- Move WordPress from the dev environment to the new server.
- You basically "pull the plug" on the old site by removing index.hrml and letting index.php (which is part of wordpress) take over.
- Put in your 301 redirects ASAP.
- Crawl the new site for 404s
- Monitor WMT like crazy for a few weeks looking for any missed redirects.
I definitely recommend getting a dev to assist you if you don't feel comfortable!
Hope that helps.

I just moved 2 sites from HTML to WP. I will be moving 1 more next week.
ADVICE: Don't forget to have your 301s already prepared! My urls used to end like the example.com/whatever.html. On WP they end like this example.com/whatever/
So make a list of all your URLs and have it prepared ahead of time so you don't get ht with duplicate content.
BTW, I suffered ZERO loss of rankings going from HTML to WP.

I think you have the perfect responses from Kade, Takeshi and Christopher. I agree with each one of them. In my opinion, the crux is that if done correctly it can be very very beneficial in terms of functionality, features and how visitors like your website and interact with it. I totally understand the concerns, they are very legit concerns. I would suggest to build your new stie using Wordpress on a staging server, test it to make sure all images, file paths etc are consistent and the code is clean. If you like it all, do the switch. You'd be fine.

I am finishing up a project to move a site that is two years old from HTML to WordPress and from an old domain to a new domain. Although the URLs are not identical, there is pretty much a 1 to 1 mapping using 301 redirects in the .htaccess file. I also informed GWT of the move. It's a bit early, but so far, I have not noticed any drop in traffic.
But here's the best part. The site looks much much better and it is also responsive (about 25% of our viewers are mobile and growing). As a result, people are viewing more pages and spending more time on the site. I expect Google will notice that.
If the rankings hold, I plan to update several sites that are 20 years old from HTML to WP.

Be very careful to make sure that when you move your old site to Wordpress that your URL's stay EXACTLY the same and the content does not have a major overhaul. Also, if images on your website rank well in image search, make sure that the URL structure and location of those images doesn't change. 12 years and ranking well is not something you want to lose.
The question of should you is completely up to you. Are you going to save money doing this? Is it enough money to warrant the time spent making the transition? How often do you need to be changing data? Do you have the technical know how to make the transition? Can you hire someone to do it for you? Will the end result be a better experience for your site's visitors?
These are just some questions to really get you thinking about whether or not it is worth it.

Wordpress is great because it's much easier to update than a plain HTML site, and you can quickly add a lot of features to your site through plugins. You also get built-in RSS feeds.
The main thing to keep in mind during the move, is to preserve your URL structure so that links pointing to your old content don't get lost. If you have to change the URL structure during the move, make sure to include the appropriate 301 redirects ("Redirection" is a great plugin that can do this for you).

Has anyone transferred a site from WordPress to Webflow?
We're thinking about making the move, but I'm (mildly) concerned about SEO implications.

Opencart vs. Wordpress/Woo
There are two issues facing me today. One is that my two e-commerce stores need updating after some 4 years, but I am seriously considering switching from Opencart to Wordpress/Woo. Opencart is a nightmare to work with at the best of times. Whenever I try to edit the footer of my current sites for instance nothing changes, the customisation of pages is sloppy and although the site works fine for perhaps the first 6 months, anytime after that it just slowly falls apart. Wordpress however features incredible customisation, is easy to edit the code but it lacks the backend functionality that Opencart is good at. Does anyone know the downsides of changing to Wordpress/Woo in respect to SEO?

Will having two wordpress themes installed hurt seo?
We currently have 3 sites built on WordPress that have little to no blogging capabilities. Currently, all published posts show up on a /category page which does not resemble the traditional blog format and is not aesthetically pleasing. We would like to have a more traditional blog and are considering installing a second wordpress theme on the site which will strictly be used for /blog and all the posts. My question is will having the second WordPress installation on the sites hurt us in any way on the SEO front and if we go this way should we place the install in a subfolder or on a subdomain? Is there anything else we need to worry about with making this transition? Thank you in advance for the advice! Patrick

Does anyone know how to find functions/codes/etc in WordPress?
Right now, I'm working on solving a relatively easy WP issue (easy, because someone told me what to do. Thanks iNetSeo). I have to replace: <span class="post_date"></span class="post_date"> and replace it with <span class="post_date date="" updated"=""></span class="post_date> But, I can't find the "_<span class="post_date">"</span class="post_date">_For a number of my WP problems, the hardest part is just located the code/function/markup I need to replace. Does anyone know where this might usually be stored on a website? Also, does anyone know if there's any tool that would allowed to just put "various function" in a search box, and wordpress take you to where it was on the backend of your site, so you could edit it? I included a screenshot of our editors, but I already opened them all, pasted the code in Ctrl-F to no avail, but maybe I missed something. Thanks for helping with my frustrating scavenger hunt! The Best Wordpress Templates and The Best SEO Plugins??
Hey guys, I am a newbie and after so many painstaking hours of building my new site using the WIX platform, I just found out that WIX is not SEO friendly 😞 So referring to (copy n pasted) the old post below posted in by Big Bazza back in June 2011, does anyone agree or have any updated information they can assist me with so I can get my new site started ? Cheers 🙂 www.studiopress.com - excellent templates and support is first class! EDIT: These all support WP 3.0 and are SEO friendly too! (They have modified the SEO functionality) However, the framework also allows you to run Yoast Wordpress SEO - which is generally considered the best SEO plugin for WP. http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/

Thoughts on how to speed up my site? (Other site ideas.)
I was wondering if someone had a few minutes to talk a look at our site and see how to speed it up. I've ran some of the speed tests and I get different results, so I'm not sure if my site would be considered "slow" or not. Also if there any other things that jump out at you (usability, side bar, things I should change / add / take away to make a users experience better, etc.) please let me know. Any feedback is good feedback to me. 🙂 I'm using WP Super Cache as well. Thanks!

Given the lastest Google update, should I rewrite my Flash site or try to present an alternative HTML/CSS site?
I have a site that was created using Flash. The reasoning behind this was, at the time, that I didn't care if the site ranked or not (portfolio site). Now I would like to drive traffic to the site from SE's. Given the Penguin update, should I rewrite my Flash site in HTML/CSS or present an alternative site for bots and browsers that don't support Flash? My concern is that by presenting an alternative site to bots and non Flash supporting browsers that the SE's will see potentially see this as cloaking. Thoughts and advice would be much appreciated.

Effects of HTML layout on Arabic websites and SEO
Hi all, I was hoping someone may be able to help. We are putting together an Arabic website and due to reading right to left as opposed to left to right, the site HTML layout is mirrored compared to normal with everything flipped over. What we are wondering is, will this effect SEO and what are the SEO implications of this? Do the search engine bots automaticlaly know to read the content etc differently and understand that everything is purposely mirrored / the HTML is in a different location compared to a site in the UK / US etc? Any help on this would be most appreciated. Cheers!
