Directory sites in 2013
-
Are there any directory sites or article/press relies sites that are worth getting links on in the post panda/penguin worked of 2013?
-
My 2c; I'm deleting all mine now, even though I originally paid for a lifetime listing.
Why? because Link Detox (for one) is now classifying BOTW as 'highly toxic'. I've come to agree with them. They are, at the end of the day, paid links.
-
my research has been pointing to them all being useless if not damaging now.

Links from press releases are worthless, says Matt Cutts.
Links from article directories are even more worthless, says Matt Cutts.
Links from directories? Less clear-cut. SEOMoz publishes a comprehensive list -- but the jury's out on their effectiveness, with even SEOMoz staff claiming "that list is certainly not an endorsement". -
I would mostly going to agree with David’s answer.. you should have to have your quality matrix before you are going for any link no matter if it is Guest Blogging, Press Release or any other form of link.
In this case I would usually look in to the reputation of the website (directory or PR website), indexed pages of the website, relevancy of the niche, good DA.
As far as “Not Free at all” is concern it can be true in many cases but still I will not make it a part of my matrix and will also consider some great websites that offer link for FREE!
-
A very small amount IMO. Those that are:
- Highly relevant to your niche
- Not a free for all
- Well indexed
- Have decent DA
-
Mark, there are always certain niche directories that are worth getting listed. But it all depends upon the niche of the site, the current link profile, the competition link profile and what I am trying to overcome.
Presuming you have a brand new website that you are trying to promote and have absolutely no link profile currently, I'd look at a little bit of directory links to start with (0-10 niche directories only including submitting to DMOZ, Yahoo Directory if it's in your budget, BOTW (same budget rule) as well as any industry specific niche directories and/or Yellowpages if you are a local business).
I hope this helps.

Link building for a non-linkable site?
Hello, I am trying to zone in on a link building strategy for a non-linkable site. What I mean by non-linkable is I have a construction site. It's a family owned and operated small business. Our clients are farmers and older people usually. We go do a job, do it right the first time, and leave. Basically even if a couple of people who link to me for some weird reason, this is no way in the realm of 6,000 that my main competition has. I have tried to get as many quality citation resources as possible by using get listed, and white spark. My domain authority is only 16 though, so I must be able to increase this somehow. I have listed with Google +, Bing, Yahoo and every other major citation I could find. So now with trying too increase links with other ideas. I read somewhere to donate to charitable organizations, but if they link back to me as a donor, in an unrelated field, isn't that spammy like? So a construction site donating to a disease website, and then getting a backlink in return, does that look weird. It just seems like there are so many rules that I do not want to mess something up. I do not want get spammy links, but not sure if citations count as links so I am doing a win-win thing? Thanks for any tips Chris

How to safeguard against negative SEO for new sites?
Hi Mozers!! I have a question. The ugly tools for blog commenting etc are still out there, my question is what if your competitor notices you that you are new to the business and they start building 20,000+ backlinks to your new site, and they too with one exact match anchor text that you are targeting. I know we can disavow tool, but I guess that would be too late? What are your thoughts? What will be the solution the above case scenario?

We do great in earning links to our homepage, articles, linkbait, and resource pages but we get few links to our product pages which are honestly pretty boring. Do you have any advice for increasing links to these important "money" pages? (we are trying to add useful content to make them less boring and unremarkable)

Doing Local Directories for Online Stores?
I am working with some customers on SEO and wonder what to do about directories when they have an online store only. They do not want to list their home address (if they did would this be a good idea?). I know the big push now is for local directories so I'm wondering if anyone has tips for other types of directories to get into that aren't spammy. Or tips for doing SEO for sites that are online only? I know Rand talked a lot about the importance of being "real" with an about us page, contact us, etc. on his Future of Link Building Webinar and I'm wondering how to best make that work in this situation when they can't show themselves as real by being in local directories.
