Boatload of 301 Redirects Question
-
We have a client that came to us and they recently did a site makeover. Previously they had all their pages in root directory including 75+ spammy article pages. On their makeover, they moved all the article pages into a directory and added 301 redirects. In going over their site we noticed they have redundant articles, like an article on blue-marble-article.htm and blue-marbles-article.htm Playing on singular and plural with dulpicate content for most part with exception to making it plural.
If they have 75 articles, Id say 1/3 are actually somewhat original content. I would like to 301 redirect 2/3's of the articles to better re-written article pages but that would add a whole lot more 301 redirects.
We would then have a 301 redirect from root directory to article directory, then another 301 redirect from spam article to new re-written article.
- My question is, would this be too many redirects for googlebot to sort through and would it be too confusing or send bad signals?
- Or should I create a new directory with all good articles and just redirect the entire old articles directory to the new one?
- Or just delete the redirects and old spammy directory and let those fall on a 404 error page.
Id hate to lose 50-75 pages but I think its in fact those spammy pages that could be why the site fell from top of first page google to third page and now 10th page in a years time.
I know, Im confused just typing this out. Hope it makes sense for some good feedback and advise. Thanks.

If the pages have traffic, rankings, etc. then its better to have a relevant one to one redirect instead of letting them 404. Its always better to 301 redirect directly to the relevant page instead of having a chain of redirects to redirects. Having 75 new redirects won't slow down googlebot. It can handle quite a lot.

Simple question: I wonder if I'm over internally linking?
Hi, What's you guys' policy on how much to internally link. I do it a lot - whenever it makes sense, but hold off if I just linked to the same page in the last paragraph, for instance. Would like to know your thoughts to see if I'm overdoing it. This is for Ecommerce blog posts, category descriptions, and product descriptions if that matters. Thanks.

Acquired Old, Bad Content Site That Ranks Great. Redirect to Content on My Site?
Hello. my company acquired another website. This website is very old, the content within is decent at best, but still manages to rank very well for valuable phrases. Currently, we're leaving the entire site active on its own for its brand, but i'd like to at least redirect some of the content back to our main website. I can't justify spending the time to create improved content on that site and not our main site though. What would be the best practice here? 1. Cross-domain canonical - and build the new content on our main website? 2. 301 Redirect Old Article to New Location containing better article 3. Leave the content where it is - you won't be able to transfer the ranking across domain. Thanks for your input.

Duplicate meta data for 301 redirected items
Google webmaster tools tells me that I have duplicate title tags for two items. They have the same product ID. When there is a change in SEO URL, the system does an automatic 301 redirect of the first item towards the second item, like in the example below:

On-Page Analysis Question
Hi, I have a question about the On-Page Analysis report. I am tracking two different keywords for our campaign: "Private Dining" and "Private Dining Sacramento". We are ranked 8th for Private Dining Sacramento but we have an On-Page analysis rating of F. While on the other hand we are not ranked in the top 50 for Private Dining but have an A on-page report. When looking at the on-page report it makes sense that we have an F for Private Dining Sacramento as we don't use that keyword anywhere on the page. We only use Private Dining. However, we are still ranked for Private Dining Sacramento and not for Private Dining. Should we update our keywords/text to use the Private Dining Sacramento keyword instead of the Private Dining? If we add Sacramento will we also get credit for Private Dining because it will still be part of all H,P and A tags we use? Sampe Report | Keyword | Grade | Google US |

Temp redirects of homepage URLs
Working on a site for a client and the CMS provider has all variants of their domain (.co.uk & .com and / and http:// etc) temp redirecting to the /default.aspx homepage. I know in theory that this means no Google Juice is being passed to the final location page, does this mean that all backlinks that point to their domain are not actually passing Juice onto the homepage? Thanks

Title tag questions
General title tag questions how important is it not to change your title tag, I own a prom dress site and I'm always changing them between prom and homecoming' Is it bad to have title tags that are only different by one word across thousands of pages on your site. I have thousands of dresses so each title tag only varies by the style # I have always had title tags that are for example black prom dresses, well i recently discovered that just black dresses is googled 10 times the amount so im debating changing them to black dresses so that the word dresses is closer to the front of the title tag, am I over reacting or is that a good idea or would it be bad to put black dresses, black prom dresses, black homecoming dresses I also put the year in almost every title tag 2012, is that bad, I ranked great for 2012 stuff but could it hurt my homepage domain rankings on major broader keywords

301 Re-directing a page
Hi, My website is appearing on page 1 of Google for a specific keyword, however when clicking on the search result, the page is out of date. As a short term solution, I have 301 redirected the url to a more up to date page on my website and beginning to optimise the on page content of this new page Is there any recommendations on what to do with the old page that appears on page 1 Google - as the page title, meta description and url displayed is out of date? Any help, best practise would be great...
