Paid Directory Value
-
Hi All!
Recently we scaled back the number of paid directories that we use for our clients, mainly due to them being devalued. To select which directories made the cut, we looked at things like Domain Authority, Page Rank, and Trust; all of the things you're supposed to be looking for in a quality link. We even used the list of directories here on SEOmoz as a reference. Two of the directories we use are Yahoo and BOTW, both of which seem to draw the ire of many professionals here. Is there something I'm missing? If these directories have solid numbers, why such backlash towards them?
I appreciate any insight you can give me!

Hi Guys,
I agree with Takeshi and Michael.
As a city specific directory creator I think that you have to look at value here and yahoo and BOTW just are not offering that value anymore.
I know that for us, the changes have forced us to look at value of content (which thankfully has always been a key to our success), user engagement and social interaction. Unfortunately not all directories can do this because they are so broad.
When looking for a directory, I would be looking for niche and trying to find the opportunity to leverage knowledge for link. We now accept high quality unique articles and interviews in exchange for links.
I know my take is outside the box, but google wants socially engaging user friendly content, give them socially engaging user friendly content

Takeshi is right, the argument against BOTW and Yahoo isn't that they aren't great links, as often times they are. The reality is that at $300 odd per link, can you get far more substantial elsewhere for less? That depends entirely who and what you know. If you can justify the cost and have the budget then yes the links themselves are quality.

I think both directories are overpriced for the value they offer, but it can be worth it if you have the budget. It also depends on what category you are submitting to-- some category pages have higher authority than others.

Getting two BOTW.org listings? Regular drirectory + blog directory?
I have a start-up website. It's a niche market that's not all that competitive. I'm trying to get going with some basic link building, and I'm trying to focus for the time being on some recommended directories: BOTW, yahoo, business.com, etc. I already have a regular BOTW directory listing, accepted a few days ago. I'm wondering if it's worth also getting a BOTW blog directory listing? So two BOTW listings, the first pointing to the homepage, the second would point to the blog. If there is meaningful link juice to be passed, would there be an advantage of having two links? Or will the one I already have suffice? Also, since the site is new, I only have a few blog posts. Is BOTW likely to reject me because my blog is too thin? The posts I have are content-heavy (1000-2500 words per entry), but there's just not a large total quantity yet. Normally I wouldn't consider it, but they're having a cyber-monday sale today where it's 50% off the regular price, so it makes the decision easier. Thanks.

Why am is my PR # dropping after signing up for quality directories?
I have followed the suggestion regarding quality inbound linking from reputable sites....ie open directory, yahoo, and only directories recommended by other SEO groups and only with PR's of 4 or higher. After listing, my PR # went down. How do I find the culprit to start reversing this? My fear is I am on a downward slope..Thanks!

(I currently have a DBA for each term....for ex.. horse buggy and horsebuggy.net . Thank you, Boo

What's your favourite SEO directory?
We're having a bit of a debate in the office today about SEO directories. We all seem to have our favourites here - Octopedia, AbiLogic and JoeAnt to name a few that have been mentioned. Just wondering what everyone else's favourite directories for SEO are? Which pass the best link juice? Which offer the best value for money? Would love to know everyone's thoughts...

Is there a way to leverage paid advertisements placed in industry specific publications to get SEO benefits?
Is there a way to leverage paid advertisements placed in industry specific publications to get SEO benefits? I am looking to advertise in publications like trade journals or magazines, but want to also reap SEO benefits by getting a link. So I am avoiding buying banner ads, but instead trying to find opportunities for links from editorial mentions, quality article or editorial submissions, etc. Advice on the link proposition, or best way to approach editors, please? Many of these publications are traditional print publications, and their sites are really seo'd. Thanks.
