Results for wrong keyword
-
I've started to look at ranking and visitor behaviour within a specific product category and I've come across this strange data in GA that i'm struggling to get my head around.
- keyword - wishbone necklace gold
- landing - ...necklace-dive-in.html
- bounce - 99.31%
- new visits - 0.00%
The landing page is not anywhere in the results for the given keyword (nor does the keyword appear anywhere within the page). The data is spread out to date since Dec 2011 and the landing page accounts for about 97% of the traffic for that keyword.
I then looked at browser which is 95% Safari (different versions) and breaking that down into City about 30% is (not set), 30% a single city and then there is a spread of locations. It might be fair to assume that therefore 60% could be the same location but there is still 40% to take into consideration.
What I can't get my head around is how the landing page is being accessed so regularly for the wrong keyword. The correctly ranking URL only accounts for 5% of the traffic which is more in line with the estimated search volumes for that keyword. I've checked versions of the page going back and none contain the keyword.
Am I missing something, or any ideas how to fix?

Do you have any synonyms of those keywords on the page?
Do you have any anchor text with that keyword, or close synonyms, out there linking to the page?
Are these mobile users?
If you could share the page that might help us diagnose it as well, but one guess could be that these are mostly mobile searchers since iPhone users browse with Safari. Mobile rankings often differ from web rankings, and factoring in geographic variances it could result in most coming from a specific city.

There are no 301's that this could be happening with .
-
Yes it's organic. Just tracked it through GA via both landing page and keyword.
Not sure about de-indexing URL (as it would be several with similar issues), and I don't want to affect real results to those URLs.
-
Perhaps some page out there on some other site that is relevant to safari users links to some old page of yours that you accidentally 301'd to this page?
-
Sure it's organic?
Maybe deindex the page for a short while and then put it back and see what happens--maybe it's just a google glitch.
-
Thanks for the replies.
Yes the URL is on the domain and is the landing page. Not sure how custom search could work to skew this way as it's the stats for landing page.
As mentioned this occurs more than once where the landing page is accessed via an irrelevant keyword. The only pattern I can see is the browser with the bulk of visits is Safari, but then there are other browsers and locations grouped in. In the first example google keyword tool gives about 22pm phrase match and looks in line with the real URL results. GA is reporting around 300pm.
Confused!?!
-
Maybe from someone's custom search?
-
No, I guess that couldn't be the case if they're landing pages on your domain.
-
Maybe your analytics code is mistakenly being used on some other site?
-
I've got more strange results. Rogue keywords, disproportionate visitors to the unrelated URL and mainly from Safari users, so it's not just the one keyword/URL
Looking in GetClicky the keywords are not coming up at any point.

SEO Keyword Research
Is there a way to insert Google API into Excel? I want to have a search volume column that would automatically fill out with query Another question is that I have a list of keywords in one column in Excel with another column that have search volume. I then go and do some research on keyword groups with a grouping tool but if this tool doesn't find a group for a keyword it removes it. So then when I want to copy and past keywords and match keyword columns in excel that already exist with search volume I have to do it manually because some rows are missing. Is there a way this could be done automatically so that when I paste it in the column with keywords it automatically finds that the current column exists and adds a group column ?

Keyword Rank Dip - Estimated Wait Time to Return to Higher Spot?
The organic traffic to our site (fairly new) took a ~50% hit about a month ago due to the drop in our most important keyword. The numbers have come back up and are now exceeding the number before the dip. While this is all fine and dandy, we're still not ranking in the top 50 for our most valuable keyword. We've put out a number of guest post on reputable outside sites and are building a regular cadence of those posts, but my question is, what is the realistic wait time for those organic rankings to increase again?

Google Analytics Organic Search Keywords Suddenly Displaying FulL Urls
In my Google Analytics, the top keywords for Organic Search are suddenyl displaying full URLs. For example, now the third and fourth keywords are http://www.domain.com/highly-specific-URL. These have all started recently around the same day, July 12th. I've checked back, and we've made no internal changes to the site around that time that could affect this. Any thoughts on this? Thanks! P.S. It might be related to rich snippets, but I cannot tell at this point.

How long after a redirect should we see results?
In mid September we had to so some redirects from old URL's to new URL's. We haven't seen a significant jump in traffic so we are wondering how long this might take before we see a change. We are the brand so we should be getting some sort of authority from Google, yes? Any tips that can be offered would be grateful as we are stumped.

Drastic keyword position drop from time to time
Hey guys, I'm having the following issue. My keyword position in SERP is usually 10-11 but sometimes (like once a month or so) it drops to like to position 46 or something of that kind. Why would that be happening and what can I do to avoid that stuff?

Why do I get lots of traffic from a bizarre keyword?
Bit of an odd one but I've been getting a large and steady stream of traffic over the last few months from a very random keyword that according to addwords figures shows "on data". Its our second biggest referring term only beaten by our brand name. We get more traffic from this term than keywords we have invested a lot of time in that show thousands of traffic volume in addwords. When looking at behavioral data its gets odder, a bounce rate of 98.11% time on site 2 seconds and page visits 1.02. So this traffic isn't real traffic and it's not real people. So my questions are, what is it? why do we get this random traffic, has anyone els noticed things like this and is it a problem? I presume it must be something to do with some sort of spam but apart from that i'm stumped. It's just one of those things that has been bugging me so I would appreciate any help. Kind Regards Paul
