New jobboard: Can redirecting folder (site.com/jobboard) to subdomain (jobboard.site.com) hurt SEO?
-
Hi there,
I'm planning to implement a jobboard on my website which needs to be installed on a subdomain (jobboard.site.com) but I'd really like to use site.com/jobboard for promoting this jobboard (jobboard collects external industry jobs).
Are there any possible disadvantages when I set up a 301 redirect from jobboard.site.com to site.com/jobboard?
Also: What if I want to move this jobboard to a unique domain one day (e.g. jobboard-industry-xy.com), Would that be tricky (as I'd basically have to redirect the folder-to-subdomain redirect to an external domain and therefore get a folder-to-subdomain-to-external-domain redirect...)?
Cheers,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
If I could jump in here - I think the two levels of 301 redirects won't sacrifice much. A small amount of link equity is lost through a 301, so you'll be doubling that, which isn't ideal, but if you are indeed anticipating hosting the job board at three separate locations, there won't be much of a way around this.
You could change the first level 301s (from the subdirectory) to skip the middle step and point right to the domain, and then 301 any pages on the subdirectory that built links to the domain, avoiding the multi-step 301s for the most part.
Provided your directory structure and page titles don't change much along the way, it shouldn't be too difficult to get the 301 redirects done, even if they're folder-to-subdomain-to-external-domain.
Best,

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the reply!
Both installations will use custom CNAME settings but the jobboard could get popular some day and justify a unique domain (for better branding) - what do you think about the future change of the domain and the needed multiple redirects (subdomain to directory to external domain) SEO-wise?
Cheers,
Thomas

I have had the argument over and over, most say subdirectories are better, but none have produced any evidence to back this. On the contrary
Deb, it really is a pretty personal choice. For something small like a blog, it probably won’t matter terribly much. I used a subdirectory because it’s easier to manage everything in one file storage space for me. However, if you think that someday you might want to use a hosted blog service to power your blog, then you might want to go with blog.example.com just because you could set up a CNAME or DNS alias so that blog.example.com pointed to your hosted blog service. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/subdomains-and-subdirectories/What's the difference between using subdomains and subdirectories? When it comes to Google, there aren't major differences between the two http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2008/01/feeling-lucky-at-pubcon.html

On-page SEO
This is a question for the organic SEO experts, once you added the main keyword that you want to rank for in the homepage title, meta title plus meta description, perhaps once or twice in the text on the homepage. How often do you then write it in the content marketing, say blog posts, we want to rank higher on Google for "SEO agencies Cardiff" however if you mention this in the blog posts too much say once a week, this could lead to over optimisation issues?

Can horrific grammar and spelling in comments hurt the value of an otherwise great page?
I've got a website whose pages get lots of comments. Tons of activity, which I would think Google would like (and seems to like). However -- I just can't put this nicely -- most commenters are not very bright. Their grammar and spelling is horrific. These are not foreigners who lack English skills, they are just about all primarily English speakers and the site is 99% US traffic. It's a low-income segment of the population. So, I've been wondering recently if Google will mark down the value of the page due to the bad grammar and spelling in the comments, even if the page's content is otherwise very good and lengthy. I have read that they grammar and spelling into consideration when looking at the page, but would that include comments, or would they know they are comments and not judge a page on that? It would be a pain, but maybe I should I run all the comments at least through a spell checker? And manually fix their grammar? Problem is I get about 40 comments a day. And when I say bad grammar and spelling, I mean REALLY bad. Embarrassing.

301 redirects. If new website is a different business does it still send link authority?
Hi Guys. I'm a music producer and studio owner. I want to start a new business for online music mixing. Instead of starting from scratch I want to use a 301 redirect from my previous site that has built up a little authority over the years. However, the old site is purely for my music studio, there is no mention of online mixing services. Will Google consider this 'odd'? Pass less link juice? Or perhaps pass no authority at all if Google 'decides' the 2 business are unrelated? Cheers in advance guys. Isaac.

Multi-Site SEO using Host Headers
Hi - I'm working on a proposal for a client who runs 3 different career websites. He uses "host headers" to direct the website visitor to the correct website. For example, if the visitor comes from Washington he goes to one url. If he is in Kansas, he goes to another URL. Does anyone have any experience doing SEO with this type of system? What do I need to know? What are hurdles I'll encounter? Thanks, -Hunter
