How to make a bad posting drop down the search engines
-
we have had a competitor who has been stealing a lot of content from us and now they have used seo tactics to write a bad article about one of our sites that they have been taking content from, and what we would like to do is to use seo techniques to drop their article down the rankings.
We are consulting a solicitor to take action against them as we are fed up of the content being stolen and the other techniques they are using, can anyone give me ideas on the best way to drop this post down the rankings.
I was thinking about articles and press releases and blog posts to get higher up in the rankings and do a lot of these to drop their article down the rankings.
Our solicitor has already taken action against them in the past and that cost us a fortune and it looks like we are going to have to spend a fortune again, so any help on using seo techniques to drop their article down the rankings would be great.

Thanks for this. we did fill out a form with google but heard nothing back. at one time we had 30 sites with the same content as ours, when we contacted one of these sites and threatened them with legal action, they were very worried and a solicitor contacted us and told us that they were given the content by a third party.
I cannot go to much into this for obvious reasons but the company in question is a franchise company who feel scared about the service so they use underhand tactics.
What we need to do is to increase the brand exposure on google so the brand is always displaying in the top of google and people do not see these silly posts or bad articles.

thanks for this, i have used authorship before, but did not think about using it on that site, so i will start using that and hopefully it could help solve some of the problem

thanks for that, i will try that

That's definitely frustrating. I've been in the same boat a number of times and had decent success with a few tactics. Before you start looking at Negative SEO techniques or responding with underhanded tactics, first look at your brand.
Do you feel your brand is stronger and more solid than the copying brand?
Do you have something that's unique that they are unable to copy?If the answer is yes to both of those questions, then first focus on improving your service and look to make your brand stand out a bit more from the copy. As your brand grows stronger, their brand will get pushed back naturally. Start pushing on social media and engaging your followers to post, comment, and share your posts. This engagement will boost your SEO and the positive comments from your audience will start to show that you offer a better product.
That's the long term solution. In the short term, look and see what they're copying. If they're copying your posts word for word, then you can report that to Google. Google has a Report Copyright page for this:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dmca-notice?pli=1&
Google gets to these in time and will eventually drop their pages. You can also DMCA their hosting company if they're clearly copying your articles.
To combat any false negative articles they're writing about you, I would start leveraging social media. If you can get your clientele to start engaging your page, post good comments, and like posts, users who search for your brand will see that you offer a legitimate service. Follow up by writing press releases that link to your social media pages, articles, guest posts, and get the word out that you have fans who've left great feedback.
If you can successfully show that you're better without getting your hands dirty, your brand will be much stronger than the copy. They will eventually fall behind and be unable to keep up. The down side is it takes a bit more effort. However, I've taken the low road before and the problem is you end up just bickering at the same level. Neither company moves ahead because all they do is fight rather than improve their products.

There has to be a way to integrate authorship and having content on your site first that would identify their content as "stolen". http://www.google.com/insidesearch/features/authorship/index.html

Go for exact match domains, web 2.0 blogs and profiles, and social profiles. Make them legitimate and link to them (or interlink them)
Some should get traction and push the article down. It sucks, but people like that exist in this world, but karma is a b*tch and they will pay for it

Why did Moz remove thumbs down from blog posts?
You may have already noticed one of the decisions we made when we redesigned the Moz Blog:
Content Development | | Trevor-Klein
We removed thumbs down from the posts. And it was largely in the name of transparency. Wait, HUH? You took away a method of critique, and you're calling that transparent? Yes. Here's the scoop: Thumbs down are one of the most cryptic, uninformative, and often passive-aggressive forms of feedback on the Internet today. By removing the mud from the water, we make the entire picture clearer. It's so easy to see a handful of thumbs down on a post (we would almost always get 1-2), and begin hypothesizing what went wrong. We shouldn't have published that one. The topic was too tangentially relevant; it was too long or too hard to follow. There wasn't enough evidence to support the claims. We could dive into analytics, attempting to glean clues about what happened, but in reality, any one of the following are reasons someone might thumb a post down: The title is confusing The topic is one that I'd like to deny exists (algo update, e.g.) The milk I poured on my cereal this morning had gone bad, and I need to take out this frustration somehow I once had a falling-out with the author of this post I still have a bad taste in my mouth about yesterday's post, which is skewing my thoughts about this one I found one of the comments offensive My finger slipped on my phone while I was trying to thumb this post up (we've confirmed this happens) I didn't like the author's self-promotion in this post I saw the new Star Wars trailer, and am terrified that Disney might think including Jar Jar's long-lost brother in the new film is a good idea. I hate everything right now. Okay, the last one might be a stretch. But you get the idea. Sometimes a post would receive a disproportionate amount of thumbs down simply because the author was proposing an idea that wasn't popular, no matter its importance. One great example: Carson Ward wrote a fabulous post in 2012 titled "Guest Blogging – Enough is Enough," divining what Matt Cutts would write about nearly 17 months later. The response? 45 thumbs down – one of the most maligned posts in the history of the Moz Blog. Authors have emailed us in a tizzy, asking if their thumbs down meant they weren't quite right for the Moz audience, and in replying to them we came to this overarching realization: We didn't know why they got thumbs down, and we couldn't find out with any certainty, but more often than not it just didn't really matter. We were confident in their points and their presentation, and real criticism would nearly always show up in the comments. All that said, we love it when people offer up constructive criticism. We always take it to heart, and hearing directly from you all is the best way we can improve. For that reason among many others, we'll always have the comments below the post. If you feel like a post wasn't up to snuff, please take a moment and tell us why in those threads (please keep it TAGFEE). One last note: Thumbs down remain available on comments, though that's a temporary stop-gap while we work on a more informative system for flagging comments that are offensive, or facepalm-worthy attempts at links (they're nofollowed anyway!), or otherwise inappropriate for our community. We'd love your questions or comments on this change, and hope you're enjoying the new look of the Moz and YouMoz blogs!11 -
How to make a .dwt in html 5
I bought a new HTML 5 theme. My website is still in frontpage and now the SE penalties are killing my business I have lost over $150K in revenues since July compared to the previous year and am going insolvent if I don't get my rankings back. So I have redo my website this week. I have tried many times to do this with many platforms (drupal, C5, joomla & others) and my brain keeps getting stuck. I think I figured out why. I am used to frontpage and the .dwt which allows me to easily create new pages from the .dwt and I know enough about SEO to do the job but I can't get out of the gate with the new themes. The .dwt worked with my brain & I am lost without it. My questions are 1-Is there a web editor I can get for HTML5 that I can create a .dwt from? The site I got the theme from also sells them for dreamweaver & expression web but I am concerned if I use those I will find myself right back where I am now, w/ an unsupported platform. 2-The other thing I am stuck on is when I open the index.html file in an editor and try to modify a page to get started, I try to preview the page and I can't see the CSS. Is that normal? My concern is spending the massive amount of time to do the work and then finding it doesn't display properly. 3-I also need the ability to 301 redirect my old pages which I can't do with frontpage, I'm at the point where i must redo the site ASAP and upload it but I can't get it started. I must rename most of my pages for SEO reasons, i used short form page titles not long form when I did it years ago. For instance, the domain is cheaptubes.com and I have a page that is cheaptubes.com/swnts.htm when it should be cheaptubes.com/single-walled-carbon-nanotubes.htm for proper SEO. I need to redo the site, rename the pages, and then 301 to the new pages. I had my hosting co do a 301 years ago from my old domain cheaptubesinc.com to the new one cheaptubes.com but a moz member correctly showed me yesterday that the 301 is no longer there. (another reason to get to a platform where I can do the 301's myself). I am getting a duplicate content penalty as the SE's see both sites with the same content. I think all of these things add up to the total devastation I am seeing with my business and I will go under soon if I can't start ranking well again. If I can get the new site up & the 301's working then I will resubmit the site to the SE's 4- do I need to 301 the old site too?

WordPress Guest Post Admin Access?
Is there a plugin or function in WordPress for a guest poster to just get admin access to control comments? Example: Big Brand X writes a guest post on www.yoursite.com. Big Brand X wants admin access to approve or delete comments on their guest on www.yoursite.com. Big Brand X doesn't want access to edit their guest post or any other post on www.yoursite.com, they just want admin access to manage the comments on their guest post. Is this possible? Thanks for the help!

Where is microdata (schema.org) already being used by major search engines?
I know Google recently launched their recipes search, but apart from this where else are you seeing microdata being used?

Posting youtube videos on your site-use irframe or "old embed code"
If you choose "embed" now, youtube gives you the choice of using an iframe: <iframe width="430" height="352" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0-nKXALtHWs?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe> or, the old embed code: <object width="430" height="352"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0-nKXALtHWs?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0-nKXALtHWs?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="430" height="352" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></object> Is either better when it comes to seo?
