What To Focus On SEO / Link Building for this campaign to rank again..

Hi All; I recently joined Moz and I am really starting to learn a lot here. I am still finding it difficult to figure out what to focus on the most to improve my rankings (although I do have some page 1 ranks)
I have one strong competitor who has a SOLID spot in the top 5 of google for the past few years for the keyword I would like to be ranked for again. (as they have always been a competitor of mine either 1 spot above or 1 spot below). then i fell off google in January and finally made it back to page 1. But their links are thousands higher than mine.
What parts of my SEO Link Building should I focus on the MOST to improve my ranking to move up a few spots?
Followed links vs No Followed Links
Followed Linking Root Domains vs NoFollowed Linking Root Domain
Any help would so greatly be appreciated; also please explain why you would focus on that part of my campaign so I can better understand as well.

Your focus should be on link building as well as on-page SEO.
The number of links don't matter but the quality or value matters. A page with 5 quality backlinks can rank better than a page with 100 low quality backlinks.
As far as on-page SEO is concerned, focus on keywords, internal linking and most importantly content! Go through the content of your competitors site, identify the gaps or disconnect between your content and the keyword you want to rank for. Write for the users and fill those gaps.

Onsite SEO - 30%
Offsite SEO - 70%
From what I can see based on the images you attached, your competitor has many more links than you (or your client) and the c-block variation is big. C-blocks are really important.
I would go for dofollow links with the right anchor text. Becareful not to over optimize your keyword . It is really easy to do.
Their social media is way ahead of yours as well. I would start with getting more white hat keyword links.

My average visit duration is UP by 110% from 2 minutes to 4 minutes... and my visits (rankings) are down by 6 %.... I would have thought to see more positive ranking affects from that..
Latttteee last night I asked this question Just like the question says, I would have thought that Google would reward a site with more traffic that clearly has a growing level of user engagement. I can't imagine that there are other sites in my niche that are having a longer rate of user engagement... Well, since I can't guarentee that, let's not debate what we don't know.. But shouldn't SOME benefits be seen for a 110% increase? I mean shit, if I could replicate those results with sales, I would really be able to afford higher rankings... Maybe that's how they feel? If I get longer duration, I should get more sales, which means I should be able to afford to pay a professional more to get me to rank higher....? It's a great thing that your user engagement is up, but it will not benefit you with a better rank on the back of that. Are the other factors such as page rank, Alexa rating and mozRank used to determine where I will show up in search results, over Goggle's key word rank for my key words?

How does this domain / page rank for this particular term?
Hi everyone, I'm wondering whether someone can enlighten me as to how a particular page / domain is ranking for a term that the page appears to be in no way optimised to receive traffic to. The search engine is Google Australia and the Search Term (albiet low volume) is "Bunbury Builders" the top organic result is the homepage for "Content Living" www.contentliving.com.au/ There is one single mention of Bunbury on the page (as a phone number in the footer of the page). I've disabled javascript, css, and spoofed my user agent as Googlebot and I can't see anything suspect going on here at all. I also ran the domain through open site explorer and I couldn't find a single anchor text reference to bunbury directing visitors back to this domain. We haven't yet begun targeting this term, but I was curious to see (for my own education as much as anything else) how they were achieving this ranking position. Any feedback would be appreciated.
