Which holds more weight..Citations or Social?
-
If a client has budget constraints, would it help local rank more if we placed emphasis on building out a couple citations each month for them or boosting their social posting frequency? Does one carry more weight?

And we are so glad to have you, Scott! A very warm welcome!

Thanks everyone! What a great community, so glad I joined;)

Hi Scott,
While both forms of marketing are important, I agree with members' suggestions that citations should receive first focus. You might try to imagine a Local Search Marketing plan in this order:
On-page optimization===>Local Listings===>Ongoing content publication===>Reviews===>Social===>Linkbuilding===>Video
The last 3 items on that list may be optional, depending on how competitive the client's niche is. Everything on the list is important, but what you must do for each client will vary based on their unique level of competition.

When the target is ranking and the option is between social and citation... I would always choose citation as this might not directly help you with conversions but obviously van help you grow your local rankings for multiple key phrases.
If the primary need is conversion then I would say use powerful and effective social strategy as this will convert visitors in to leads!

Well they do Junk Removal. Competeing against big guys like 1800 Got Junk. I mean they do social, but barely. Like 4.16 tweets/mo and 2.3 FB posts/mo so far this year. As for citations they just did a blast on Yext and thats it! Right now they really need to do some onsite work and some link building from what I gather.

I agree with Spyder, but I also want to ask what is the goal of the client. Do they want to rank well? If that's the case cituations might be the way to go, but if they offer a cool service or have some form of content that you can use you might want to think about social.

Thanks man! I was kinda thinking the same thing. I heard a statistic a while back about how many tweets it takes to actually start influencing and the number was crazy big.

If they are looking for local leads, go directly to building Citations. Social mentions will do very little to help with Google local rankings. Realistically, unless it is a metro area and you dedicate a lot of time & energy towards social, your efforts will not be show adequate ROI.
Why Citations are Important:

What is everyone using for social media reporting now?
Now that Moz has retired the social element, I'm at a loss as to what to use instead. What have you all switched to? We use Hootsuite to schedule Twitter and LinkedIn posts for our clients, and Facebook native mode for scheduling there. At the end of each month I produce an SEO report for each client and up to now, that's always included the social report from Moz. I want to be able to report on the following for Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. what traffic has come to the client's website from each social channel growth in followers/fans engagement for the month eg how many retweets, likes, shares etc best performing posts on each channel I've looked at Sprout, but it seems to me that in order for Sprout to give you all the reporting info you need, you have to use it to manage all your social media channels, and as mentioned above, we already use Hootsuite for this. I don't want to switch completely. Twitter Analytics gives me the info I want for Twitter, but doesn't output this to a pdf style graphical report. I just want a nice summary to give my clients every month. Any ideas as to the best way to report on all this while still using Hootsuite to do the scheduling? My feeling is that I just want a flexible, easy to use and comprehensive reporting tool that covers all social channels, and not a social media management tool.

Are Social tags beyond Structured Data still required?
Hello: I have a client that has Structured data set up correctly to include their social profiles for FB, Twitter, and Google+. But when I run an audit tool it tells me that they need < re=Publisher > tag for Google Plus. My understanding is that we don't need any additional code beyond the Structured Data tags. Is that correct? Thank you Rosemary

How does knowing SEO benefit a consultant in social media
Hi Mozers I'm in the process of trying to secure a client that requires social media expertise. I want to be able to use my SEO knowledge as a benefit. Does anyone know of any good resources I can work through to communicate this issue effectively?

Analytics tagging on social media links
Curious: do you all tag your social media links with Google Analytics parameters? I know Google Analytics automatically tags referrals from social channels, but I am interested in possibly adding additional tracking parameters to links that I share and potentially promote. If I tag my social links with GA tracking codes, and they are shared widely, do I lose any potential SEO value from those links? I know Google isn't necessarily factoring in social shares from Facebook, etc. yet, but it would seem that, since tagged links are ones that we've influenced, any shares of that link would potentially be considered unnatural? Just curious what others' best practices are for social sharing. Thanks, in advance.

Lost social share count after migrating blog
Hi, Yesterday I migrated our blog to a new domain. It seems it went smoothly and all 301 redirects were implemented and are working properly, however, the social share count was lost across all posts and has returned to zero. Is there any easy way I can recover our social share counts across the board? I am using the **1-click Retweet/Share/Like **plugin for Wordpress. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thank you, from Russell in South Africa.

Facebook Page likes vs Webpage facebook likes - Social Media Query
I have a website and a facebook page. I have the Facebook Social Plugin on my website which shows my facebook page likes - This is currently at approx 140 likes. Is there a difference between facebook page likes and webpage likes? For SEO purposes, should I be concentrating less on the Facebook page and more on building facebook likes for the website? Are there any guides on this? What gets people to like a website as opposed to a web-page?
