How to make Google consider my international subdomain relevant?
-
We have recently started to look deeper into international SEO. We have search engine optimized our international landing pages, title tags and meta descriptions with keywords etc. so each of the international language we support is SEO'ed for the local market.
We support 12 languages, and each of them are located on a subdomain. That means if we say our site is helloworld.com, a person from Germany that lands on this site can switch to German and will then be redirected to de.helloworld.com and all content will be in German.
Our problem is that we develop cloud-based software, we have a significant amount of traffic, but whenever we get media coverage or people link to us from anywhere in the world they always link to the root domain which in this case then would be helloworld.com. That means if I go to google.de and type in the exact meta description or title tag we use in German, the Google search engine can't even find us because "I assume" Google don't consider our de.helloworld.com relevant because nobody has ever linked to this site.
I would appreciate very much if anyone can give me some advice on how I can address this issue.
Thanks a lot!
Allan

Yes I did, already replied last week. Sent my PM again to make sure you've got it.

Hi Martijn,
Did you receive the PM I sent you?
Best wishes,
Allan

Can you PM me the site we're talking about in this case? Quite hard otherwise to give you other initiatives for your specific case.

Hi Martijn,
It has now been a few months, unfortunately these actions didn't solve the problem, we're still not being indexed on the international Google sites such as Google.fr, .de, .es etc. Any suggestions to other initiatives we can take to change that?
Thanks for your help.
Best wishes,
Allan

Hi Martijn,
Thanks a lot for the prompt response to my question. We'll look into these changes, the only thing I don't really understand is her suggestions about when not to use geotargeting in the video. She gives an example when you don't want to use geotargeting on your website and that is when you want to target a particular language versus region. I understand that we might miss out on the French speaking leads that live in Canada if we geotarget our site for France, but if that's the trade-off compared to not reaching anyone who speaks French which is the case with our current international SEO structure I'm fine with that!
However, I assume your first suggestion to look into Rel="alternate" v.s. href lang deals with that situation where you target language and not region.
Thanks again Martijn, I appreciate your help very much, and I promise I'll drop you a line when we "hopefully" can see the impact.

Hi Allan,
They're several options which could provide you with a possible solution. But of course I can't guarantee that any of these options will actually solve your problem.
- Rel="alternate" v.s. href lang: these tags will tell Google on which pages the relevant pages in that language can be found.
- Google Webmaster Tools geotargeting: with the geotargeting you're able to target your sub domain on a specific country.
I would give both a try and hopefully you can drop a comment here in a couple of weeks with hopefully positive progress.

What are the best practices for translation of city/state names for international SEO? (ie. New York in English vs. Nueva York in Spanish)
I'm working on international SEO / translation of a global travel site. While we have a global keyword research and translation strategy in process for each market they serve, I've run into a unique question. Overall, we are translating (and localizing) content for each market but aren't sure what to do with location names. Each country/state has cities and locations that have their own dedicated pages. I see three options for these location names (when titling a page and writing content): keep them in English, translate the names in the market languages, or use a combination of the two. The challenge with altering the location names to the market languages is that they are truly not known by those names. Though there are some instances where it may make sense…for instance **New York **in Spanish would be "Nueva York" with **‘**Nueva' being the Spanish translation of ‘new’. There are other instances, where no translation exists. If you’ve had a similar experience I'd love to hear your approach/recommendation.

Keyword selection for international company
Hi everyone, I am working on a new project for a telecommunications company with its target audience in various countries around Europe and USA. They only have 1 website in English and don’t have content specific to different countries. Ineed to choose keywords for this project but I am finding it quite challenging as usually my keywords are localised. In this case I cannot restrict keywords to any particular country. At the same time I know that it would be extremely tough to rank for generic keywords. What do you suggest?

How long does it take for google to realize there is a new language sub domain?
I have a global client who just launched new sub domains of their site in new languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Japanese). Example: es.client.com pt.client.com ru.amdocs.com ja.amdocs.com How long does it take for Google to recognize these new subdomains? Would submitting an XML sitemap be helpful? If so how long can we see them pick up the site? What is the best way to check that your new subdomains are showing in each countries SERPs? Thanks for your help!

Intentional redirect for international visitors to a website
We are doing PPC for a new client, and using Clicktale to improve conversion rates. However, Clicktale won't work because the client does not want international visitors looking at their website (competitive reasons! - yeah don't get me started...). They have a redirect on for all international visitors which points to a "coming soon..." page Are there any SEO implications on traffic in their own country (they currently do rank for terms)? I'd like to go back with a strong case for them removing any international redirect. Thank You

Google US vs Google UK
I could have posted this somewhere else, but I cannot find it. So, I have keywords that rank well in Google US and many that do well in Google UK too. I thought all of my keywords ranking well in the US would also rank well the UK. I have figured out today that it is not the case. Why would I rank in the top 3 in the US and not even show up in the top 50 in the UK? It is very strange. Thanks for your help! I am not super new to SEO or web business. I have had a very good company that has been ranking well since 2004.
