New Algo Update?
-
Is there a new algo update happening now with Google? I am seeing a big change in the SERP's for many keywords over the past two days.
-
Days, weeks, months, or sometimes never It is a very inexact science, and we're unaware of the vast majority of the 500+ updates Google makes every year.
-
I think there's some of that in play. If Google can make us afraid of bad links so that we all rush to remove them, for example, that's a whole lot easier than actually creating and testing an algorithm update, especially one of the complexity it would take to do the job.
I also suspect that the 10-day Panda roll-outs and "multi-week" update are, in small part, meant to obfuscate updates. More of us are tracking them, and Google is not a transparent company, IMO.
Finally, I think they're getting into territory that's just more difficult. So many complex updates have collateral damage. I really do think that the multi-week update consisted of rolling out and rolling back changes, and I'm not sure they landed on much of an answer.

Dr Pete,
How long does it normally take for the SEO community to understand a specific algo change when there is very little guidance from Google?
-
Hi Dr. Pete,
That brings up an interesting possibility.
< start conspiracy theory>
Is it possible that Google is actually going through this summer of volatility to weed out the people who are not following their policy. By this I mean that every time they make a change, anybody who is doing even the slightest "grey hat" SEO runs to their site and gets rid of it if they can. I am guessing that with just this uncertainty alone google forcing people to clean their own sites.
People who are sure their sites are clean, there is nothing they can do even if they want to, so Google may figure that after this turbulence they can just eliminate this turbulence, run the previous algorithm from before the summer (or at least a more stable one than now) and the good sites will automatically float to the top since most sites will be "clean" again thanks to all the webmasters cleaning house all summer.
I am not a conspiracy theorists, nor do I play one on TV.

We saw a Saturday spike on MozCast, but to be honest, the last few weeks have been a wild ride. I'm going to be actively analyzing the "multi-week" update the next few days (probably posting next week), which looks like it did settle down during the July 4th weekend. There's been increased volatility since Penguin 2.0, and Google claims that Panda data updates are now rolling out roughly 10 days out of each 30 (I don't completely believe that line, but that's what they're telling us).
Now clear reports of webmaster chatter about this past weekend, but rankings have been so volatile that I'm not sure anyone knows what to make of the patterns right now. Unfortunately, I think that uncertainty and noise is exactly what Google wants.
-
I'm seeing the same changes. I would say the SERP's are returning to pre-penguin position for almost all the effected terms in a very competition travel niche. Ditto your fingers crossed.
-
Big changes in my rankings. For the first time in the last 3 months, this update is actually helping the rankings. So far, I have recovered most if not all of what I lost for Penguin 2.0 (5-20 positions). Of course, this may just be the google dance and I may loose it again by tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed.

Does Google giving more important to internal pages than homepage recently? Especially after the recent Major algo update?
Hi everybody, I can see the change Google brought in the SERP. Previously website homepages will be shown for primary keywords, now it's slowly and almost switched to showing most related internal pages in a website. You can check same for keyword "SEO", Most or all the results are internal pages. I can see this change for our primary keyword from last one month. So basically Google is trying to show a page explaining about the primary keywords rather than website, that's how "what is seo" pages are ranking than homepages. If there is no such pages existed or not well written, Google is just showing the website homepage. But I noticed that websites ranking with homepages are dropped compared to the websites with dedicated page about that primary keyword. Please share your thoughts. Thanks

Algorithm update?
I read on SEOLand that there may have been an algorithm update on Feb. 1st. I got our rankings report back today and was shocked to see 103 of our 530 tracked keyword phrases went down over the last week, especially on pages that we recently updated (like a month ago max). The pages we updated went up in ranking the last two weeks in a row, but went down this week, considerably (like #14 to #34). We also submitted a sitemap update last Friday to Search Console. Checked on Search Console and noticed we also had a dip in CTR around the same time period. I know the rumored changes were targeting PBN, but could other changes be in play as well? I know we have (against my advice) a few syndicating blogging partnerships who we share content with from time to time, but nothing like a PBN. Wondering if anyone else saw a considerable dip in their rankings?

Any SEO thoughts about Google's new Data Highlighter for products?
After searching around on the web for a while I couldn't find any case studies or interesting posting about Google's new feature to highlight structured data. In Google Webmaster Tools you can now tag your products to be displayed as structured data in Google's search results. Two questions that rose immediately: 1. What effect will Google's new Data Hightlighter for products have on your SEO? Can we expect better CTR's for productspage results in Google? Better conversion rates perhaps? Any case studies that show KPI improvements after using structured data for products? 2. I would love to see some examples in the search results to see what productpages would look like after Data Highlighting it. Your thoughts or input about this subject will be much appreciated.

I know it takes one month to one year for Google to update it but I know many people sitting here at Moz know some secrets for sure.0 -
New visual search results - what is this and how do we optimize for it?
Hi all, This morning as I am doing some keyword research for a new client, I typed in the phrase and Google returned both the listings as well as a vertical photo bar. I've never seen this before. Is this new? Is it common and I've just missed it? I presume this means we need to really have our photo alt tags 'ducks in a row' but I'm also wondering if this points to an increased importance on visual content? Image attached. Thanks, YINd14d

Google Algorithm Update .. Author-rank finally kicking in ?
These few days I've been seeing great movement of my sites growing by 70-100% in traffic spikes. Some how I think this has something to do with AuthorRank maybe kicking in now as more of a factor in rankings? Anyone have an idea whats going on ?

I attached a screen shot and circled in red.. http://i.imgur.com/mWgj9.png Has anyone seen these rich snippets before? If so, what are they called and how do you get them for your site? Thanks! mWgj9.png
