Brand Search Results- how do you make sure spammy links don't hurt your brand
-
We are seeing a spammer start ranking #4 for our branded search result on google. This could potentially be hurting our brand. Any suggestions that have worked for you recently? For more context we already have:
- Create Social profiles (Linkedin, G+, FB etc) which are engaged and frequently updated
- Analyzed Domain Authority, Links and recency of the spammy article. The domain and the page authority seems weak, and the spammy article is dated Dec of last year
- Looked at various posts on http://moz.com/community/q/reputation-management.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, the spammy link has been ranking for about 2 months now. We have tried reporting to Google- but haven't seen them take down or demote the link..

How long has that site been ranking for your brand and how long have you been at the reputation management? If your brand's site has some authority and it is linking out to 10 of your brand's well established social profiles and you have at least a couple of content pieces focused on your brand name published somewhere online, you should be able to push a weak resource down off of page 1 in a relatively short amount of time.

Yes, Just wanted to clear that part...:)

Notice my first sentence "Depending on how they are using the brand name..." my whole post hangs on that.

Lesley, I believe DMCA file is good when the website that ranking for their brand name is directly hurting their brand name but this is not really a good idea if the website is just ranking against their key phrase and they think that it will hurt their brand in any way!
What I really believe is that use your social profiles more powerfully and better build some links that points to those social profiles. Also, it is a good idea to get the authorship of some good blog within your niche and that Author link can easily acquire good ranking against your brand name.
I personally advice people to have these social profiles up and running in order to hack the 1st page of Google against your brand name! http://www.setalks.com/control-1st-page-of-google/
Hope this helps!

Depending on how they are using the brand name, it might be a legal matter. It could be something easy enough as filing a DMCA notice with their hosting company or sending them a cease and desist notice. They aren't immediate solutions, but they will solve the problem.

Brand Migration Issues
My company is in the midst of a brand transition and is experiencing some difficulties in migrating web content to a parent company domain. When content from the old domain was migrated to the parent, there were rel-canonicals set on top level pages of the old domain referencing its equal on the parent destination. Then each sub-page was redirected to the parent company. What I have found is that the only pages that indexed on the partent domain were the top level pages. I am having a hard time figuring out why the sub-pages won't index. Does anyone have advice on how to handle this? Would reactivating the old URLs and setting rel-canonicals help? Also when should 301 redirects be implemented?

How can I make this into an infographic
Hello, A client of mine really wants an infographic or a visual for viral marketing. Our site: nlpca(dot)com The subject is "What is NLP?". This page has the best NLP definition - we can use the content with permission: http://www.nlpu.com/NewDesign/NLPU_WhatIsNLP.html Would this work as an infographic? Can you give me suggestions (this is my first infographic. I've been doing web design for about 15 years and SEO for 8 years) How could I make this thing really popular in our niche "NLP"? Thank you.

Do non-spammy authoritative press release sites exist?
Hi there, To help get news out about our business and increase brand awareness, I am considering doing the occasional press release. However doing research on new SEO client backlinks there seem to be a lot of poor quality, spammy press release sites. So I would appreciate some opinions on decent sites please. Obviously we wouldn't be 'article marketing' so only new unique posts would be put out there and not in duplicates either - so one press release to one site etc. Also just curious as to whether this still works for SEO? But this is a secondary concern, because the activity would be for brand awareness - so avoiding rubbish sites will save us time, effort and potential damage. Thanks in advance!

What are the best/ your favourite brand pages?
I've got a meeting today where we are looking to come up with some ideas to redesign our brand pages which are currently a bit rubbish www.schuh.co.uk/brands/converse Does anyone have some great pages that I could look to for inspiration? Idealy i'd like to get not only get SEO benefit, but also be able to use them for PPC landing pages as well as the page giving some good info on the brands we are selling. It would be great to get video on the page but this always serves to either push the product further down or get lost at the bottom. Any ideas or examples would be much appreciated!
