Will an inbound follow link on a site be devalued by an inbound affiliate link on the same site?
-
Hey guys, quick question I didn't find an answer to online.
Scenario:
1. Site A links to Site B. It's a natural, regular, follow-link
2. Site A joins Site B's affiliate program, and adds an affiliate link
Question: Does the first, regular follow link get devalued by the second affiliate link?
Cheers!

Thanks for the clarification Everett.

Most of the time the URL will be different for the affiliate link because tracking is involved. If this is the case then you don't need to worry about which one comes first, or one devaluing the other.
However, if both URLs in the href tags are exactly the same, the answer is Yes - the one nofollowed link could devalue the followable link, even if the nofollowed link is below the followed links. The issue Chris Menke is referring to above has to do with anchor text, not follow Vs nofollow. Yes, the anchor text in the first link is what counts. However, if any link on a page is nofollowed Google may choose not to follow that same link elsewhere in the document. This is an issue that was looked into when people were using nofollow tags to sculpt pagerank.

The affiliate link should be nofollowed so it wouldn't impact the regular, natural link, even if they are on the same page. If the aff link is not no followed and is on the same page as the regular, natural link, the link that is first in the html will be the one that counts, so if anchor text is important, the one with the preferred anchor text should be first on the page. If the two links are on separate pages, it won't matter.

Hi Maksym,
Are the links on different pages of site A or on the same page. It would be advisable to put them on different pages. The regular link on the existing page and the affiliate link on the page hosting the affiliate content.

OSE link report showing links to 404 pages on my site
I did a link analysis on this site mormonwiki.com. And many of the pages shown to be linked to were pages like these http://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Planning_a_trip_to_Rome_By_using_Movie_theatre_-_Your_five_Fun_Shows2052752 There happens to be thousands of them and these pages actually no longer exist but the links to them obviously still do. I am planning to proceed by disavowing these links to the pages that don't exist. Does anyone see any reason to not do this, or that doing this would be unnecessary? Another issue is that Google is not really crawling this site, in WMT they are reporting to have not crawled a single URL on the site. Does anyone think the above issue would have something to do with this? And/or would you have any insight on how to remedy it?

Are links to our website through our affiliate program hurting our rankings?
We have an affiliate program for an educational related course product and I am becoming worried that links to us on our affiliate's websites are hurting our site rankings. I have read that google is usually pretty good about picking up on affiliate links and not giving the follow links credit, but not sure if that is just for the big affiliate networks or if they can spot less obvious affiliate programs. With this in mind, would you ask all affiliates to use the nofollow tag on all links coming in, or would you make sure that the links are more branded in nature? There are a mix of text links along with banners and other display components. There would be editing that would need to be done to the core files of our affiliate/member software (aMember Pro) to make all links nofollow and we want to see if there are other recommendations before doing so. We are trying to fight out way out of what we believe is an over-optimized anchor text penalty and are evaluating all areas that we can make improvements. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Dealing with Spammy Affiliate Site Copies
We have a longstanding site that sells media files with a large number of digital products. We offer a referral program with rewards for those that tell others about us. In the last year, we have seen some sites popping up primarily in China that appear to be spammy looking advertisement based copies of our own site with product pages that link back to our actual products using a referral link/code. (no-follow links.) These sites started popping out more when we noticed that some of their pages were outranking our own actual product pages. Any thoughts on this? Our affiliate policy states that the affiliate program is meant to help and not harm our site. In one sense this is traffic to our site which is supposed to be a good thing, but if these pages are ranking above our own, that is not what we are wanting. I would bet these pages might get clicked on and due to the spammy nature of these sites, the user bounces and never actually gets to our website. How would you handle something like this? Thanks!! Craig

Do nofollow links affect link profile?
I've read that it's good to keep a natural link profile. Some naked links, some links going to our company name, some with anchor text, etc. Do nofollow links affect this link profile, or is it only followed links that are taken into account?

Redirect micro-niche site to bigger niche site?
I have a micro niche site that performs reasonably well (page 1 at least) for it's main keywords. It is an exact match domain. To save the ongoing maintenance of a site that gets less than 10 visitors a day, I was thinking of redirecting this micro niche site to a bigger site (a niche site that the micro niche fits into, if that makes sense!) Would I lose rankings because of the power that the EMD provided? Would it be better keeping it there for the backlink it provides to the bigger site (although on the same C Class IP)

Has anyone found a way to get site links in the SERPs?
I am wanting to get some site links in the serps to increase the size of my "space", has anyone found a way of getting them? I know google says that its automatic and only generated if they feel it would benifit browsers but there must be a rule of thumb to follow. I was thinking down the line of a tight catagorical system that is implimented throughout the site that is clearly related to the content (how it should be I guess)... Any comments, suggestions welcome
