Are sitewide links bad for SEO?

I have 11 real estate sites and have had links from one to another for about 7 years but someone just suggested me to take them all out because I might get penalized or affected by penguin.
My main site was affected on July of 2012 and organic visits have dropped 43%...I've been working on many aspects of my SEO but it's been difficult to come back.
Any suggestions are very welcome, thanks

Cody, what you explained is kind of similar to my situation, the 11 sites I have are all Real Estate sites and they contain different "area" information (because they cover different geographic areas) but they share the same database of properties for sale.
We do have set different search results pages to avoid showing the same properties on every site, but, there is a link to similar properties on each property page which eventually the crawler ends up indexing all properties within the database so when you mention ..."every site had the same products"... this could be a similar situation.
As of now, I am waiting to see what happens next with my rankings, I guess I am a little lost on how long will it take until some signals are reflected on the serps, any idea?

That's a good point - how do visitor view the links.

I've had websites get rid of penalties, with a lower case "p," just by getting rid of their site wide links. When we got rid of the links the rankings jumped from the 100's up to the top 5. When the site owner put the links back up the site dropped back into the 100's. We went back and forth several times with the same effect, so I'm positive that it was related.
Just an FYI, we pushed to get rid of the links altogether because every site had the same products, and sending them to a different website made little sense. Also, the bounce rate on these referrals was over 50%, compared to a site average of around 20%, so the web visitors didn't enjoy it either.

Yes, the first thing I did was to remove all these links ...as of now, I am going through all my external links and cleaning some directory links that I had from many years ago which might seem spammy to penguin.

Michael, these links were on the footer of each site. I think I was hit algorithmically because I haven't received any message from Google but like I said, my organic visits are down by 43% compared to last year.

I have answered this kind of question before as well and I will stand on my point even today! Although they all are your website and may be linking them all on each other seems logical and user friendly to you but search engine will still find it questionable and might hit you by some penguin update.
In my opinion, try to remove links if it is possible for you (no-following is not an option in my opinion) and if not at least link to other website intelligently!
Let’s say you have 11 websites and each is targeting to different location so add a link where you are talking about some other location instead of adding them all in footer or sidebar!

Generally speaking if you have site-wide do-follow links (typically footer) I would switch to no-follow immediately. If you are purely inter linking your portfolio Google is likely to spot those links are there trying to game the system.
Even if those links are offering real value to the visitor I would set to no-follow, but the way you describe that does not appear to be their primary purpose. What context and how do they appear on the page?
Also you say that you have been hit. Was this a manual penalty or an algorithmic penalty? So you are fighting the right fight have you compared your analytics with the algorithm history dates?

Internal Linking issue
So i am working with a review company and I am having a hard time with something. We have created a category which lists and categorizes every one of our properties. For example a specific property in the category "restaurant" would be as seen below: /restaurant/mcdonalds /restaurant/panda-express And so on and so on. What I am noticing however is that our more obscure properties are not being linked to by any page. If I were to visit the page myurl.com/restaurant I would see 100+ pages of properties, however it seems like only the properties on the first few pages are being counted as having links. So far the only way I have been able to work around this issue is by creating a page and hiding it in our footer called "all restaurants". This page lists and links to every one of our properties. However it isn't exactly user friendly and I would prefer scrapers not to be able to scrape all properties at once! Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dofollow and Nofollow links
What is the difference between dofollow and nofollow links? I know that some sites/blogs only let you post nofollow links. In such a case how do I know if a comment I posted on a certain site will be a nofollow or dofollow? How about big traffic sites such as Huff Post. Do they only allow nofollow links?

Differences in Sitemaps SEO wise?
I'm a bit confused about sitemaps. I'm just learning SEO so forgive me if this is a basic question. I've submitted my site to google webmaster using http://pro-sitemaps.com and the sitemap generator it creates. I've also seen sites do this: http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/ProductList.aspx and http://www.thesafestcandles.com/site-map.html so I did something similar for my site (www.ldnwicklesscandles.com). You figure you see everyone do it you might as well try it too and hope it works. 😉 So I've done both 1 and 2. Which sitemap is best for SEO purposes or should I do both? Is there any format that should or shouldn't be used for Option 2? Any site examples for good practice would be helpful.

No results with Link Analysis
So I have been working with a domain since November last year that still shows no improvement in regards to the link analysis. I am baffled because we have gotten them onto the first page on Google for a few of the keywords we are optimizing. Nofollow internal links
Hi, we have problems with having too many links on page. Our website has a menu with 3 level sub-navigation drop down for categories which we want to maintain, for easy-navigation for the users. http://www.redwrappings.com.au/ After reading this article: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/questions-answers-with-googles-spam-guru, and some other articles, we came up with a solution. We can easily reduce the number of links per page by putting 'nofollow' on our categories links menu dropdown and create a separate 'landing page' that contains links to these categories (and allow 'follow' links for robots). Is it wise to do this? Or any better, easy solution that you can suggest? Thanks

External Sitewide Links and SEO
I have one big question about the potential SEO value -- and possibly also dangers? -- of "followed" external sitewide links. Examples of these would be: a link to your site from another site's footer a blogroll link a link to your site from another site's global navigation Aside from the link's position in the HTML file (the higher the better, presumably), are these links essentially the same from an SEO point of view or different (and how)? There used to be an influential view out there that the link juice value of a sitewide link was the same as that of a single link (presumably from the linking site's home page), even though a sitewide link may in fact result a huge number individual links. Is this true or false? What is the math here? Should one worry about having "too many" sitewide links, in the sense that this may raise red flags by way of the algo? I talked to someone a few months ago (before the recent algo updates) who believed that he had got a minus 10 penalty or whatever it was for getting too many sitewide links We offer website design and development as well as SEO, and we put a keyworded link to ourselves in the footer. I think this is a fairly common practice. Is this a good or bad idea SEO-wise? One opinion is that for external sitewide footer links, you should best have a dofollow link on the home page, but nofollow it on all other pages. What is your opinion about that? Is there anything else that is distinct, interesting or important about sitewide links' SEO value and pitfalls? Thank you!
