SEOing a Site Before it is ready?
-
Hi Guys
I have a site currently being built that is 45 days away. I am wondering whether it is possible to have a dummy website (with same domain name) in play and starting the SEO effort so that these 45 days are not wasted from an SEO point of view. Is this something you have seen done effectively, or is it a no no.
Kind Regards, Justin

EGOL
Is 100% correct my answer was for somebody that might not have been creating their own content themselves.
EGOL has given you what will be your most valuable asset.
I am sure you will have a visual mockup of the website prior simply picture it then once the site is built make the content that you have spent your time creating flow with the existing structure.
Content is absolutely the way to go and I think EGOL will agree when I say content I mean of course you're text but if you are implementing videos via Wistia this would be the time to create them. If video is something you plan on using.
It actually sounds kind of nice no deadlines.
Sincerely,
Thomas

Hi Justin,
I am guessing the site you're talking about is one being built by a developer and you're going to do the search engine optimization?
If that is the case you could simply put the domain up and when the developer has finished a page during the day at night you could come in and optimize it.
Many people work together for instance the SEO's job is to make sure the search optimization it is done correctly both on page and off to the best of their abilities while the site is being constructed.
The developers job is to construct the best website possible for you. Meeting your unique criteria for what you want.
Many times some things in these categories lap over however any SEO worth their salt would want to have access two the server and Google Webmaster tools at minimum.
Extending professional courtesy between herself and the developer is crucial you do not want to slow down someone else's work nor do you want to let them hamper your work.
Two put it simply there is no need to create a another website because if that part of the website has already been created you could simply do what I proposed above or clone the website it if needed.
Simply back it up using code guard if it is a non-WordPress website code gard will work it will actually work on any website.
If you're using WordPress I would suggest using a managed WordPress hosting company for instance ZippyKid and WP engine each allow for you to clone a website.
You can opt for the mid-range of vault press that will continually back up your work on the server. Allowing you to rewind if needed. This is a WordPress only app.
I believe there are tools you can find that will do the same thing using FTP on a website of any kind.
The one issue you would have is if you're doing on page search engine optimization you will want to know what type of content is on this site in order to optimize it.
Speak with your developer and pass them what you've asked us the reason I say this is you will have to work something out with them so you're both happy and unfortunately we don't get any say over that here.
All the best,
Thomas -
It sounds like you are going to toss up a naked little site with title tags and no content or with title tags and yada yada yada content.... then Google will find it and say... "look at this trash" and give it a Panda demotion.
Spend your 45 days working hard on great content. That will be a better use of your time.

Same person on my site, every day, for over 6 months??
I watch my Google analytics real time while I work and for the last 6 months, I've had one person on my site consistently during every Monday to Friday. It's only the home page there go on, it never shows they look anywhere else. But it's starting to concern me a little since it's been going on for so long. Does anyone have an idea what they could be doing? I do my own SEO, there is no one else working on my site. Thanks in advance!

What determines the page order of site:domain?
Whenever I use site:domain.com to check what's index, it's pretty much always in the same order. I gather from this, the order is not random. I'm also reasonably certainly it isn't related to any page strength signals or ranking results. So, does anyone know why the pages are displayed in the order they are? What information does the order of the pages tell me? Thanks, Ruben

Anyone heard of or used Hadoop software for SEO/website analytics?
Hey Moz Community, We received an interesting email this morning from a client's marketing manager asking if we knew about or have ever used "Hadoop software" because "[Business owner name] says it’s supposed to help us see how people use our website and more." I've never heard of this software and upon looking around on the web, it says it can do a lot, but my client is a small law firm who average 800-1,000 visitors per month, mainly from their 2 local office cities/markets. Anyone have any thoughts on this or ever use this software? Thanks in advance. Patrick

Site Crash Effect On Traffic
All, I manage a site that unfortunately crashed due to a server issue in late October for about 3 hours. Prior to the crash, traffic was the best it had ever been in the 3+ year history of the site. As you might expect, since the crash traffic has gone gradually down and is now about 15% off pre-crash numbers. I understand that when a site crashes, it disrupts the crawling process and can disrupt traffic (in my case rich snippets were thrown off for days) but would love to hear experiences any of you have had in similar situations. How much did traffic drop after a crash? When did it recover? Other thoughts? Thanks, John

Does prevent links from being included in Google Webmaster linking sites report?
My client has clean links in edit from nytimes.com. The links do not have nofollow tags. Google Webmaster stopped including links from nytimes.com in the external linking domains report and we don't know why since the URL is still live. The nytimes.com URL includes this tag in the source code: Are links on pages with NOARCHIVE still counted in Google Webmaster linking domains reports?

Top Notch SEOs on the forum - I have a challenge for you!
I have been hitting my head again the wall trying to figure out why Google does not move my page up. All the SEOMOZ numbers show that the page has higher authority than the competition, more links, more domain authority, older domain, and higher Page rank. In addition the page is error free and I've gotten a W3C HTML 4.01 approval. About a month ago We were at #10 , then after the changes I've made to content and the page Google moved the page to #8, Now the Page is back to #9. I've done plenty of SEO to drive traffic to the page and created some very powerful and quality links. However, it seems like the page is being punished for something. Much weaker competitors are outranking our page and I am not sure why. On page optimization, title tags, Meta Tags, keyword density, etc - everything is there. In fact I have a check list that I go by and everything is by the book. Not only that, one competitor now shows up twice. First the domain and then specific page. I've looked into specific page and all they did is create 600 internal links from their own website. So now they are number #2 and #3 If anyone can take a look and give me an idea of what is going on and maybe suggest Keyword: Laser Marking Url: http://tinyurl.com/3nt3g2h Any help would be appreciated..

Will Google start trimming 'stale' sites rank?
With the recent focus on Google to reduce rank of farms and low value sites, I am interested to get SEO view on if you think Google will start devaluing stale sites. I do find it a bit frustrating that in the top 5 for my main key phrase, there is one site that has NO content just an error and another blog that has not updated content in 2 years. How can blogs that do not blog be considered high enough value by Google to rank in the top 5? How can sites that just return 404 or 500 for ALL their pages be even considered a site let alone rank 2nd. I am interested so see others experiences and thoughts on 'user experience' clean ups by Google and why these types of sites get missed?
