Which eCommerce site you consider using best practices? Site we can learn from
-
Hi,
I'm looking to hear thoughts and suggestions as per sites that you consider to have great practices in the eCommerce world.
Almost none of the sites do everything good so you can split your suggestions by any criteria -
the site structure
conversion funnel
Converting product pages (good design)
content creation and blog management / structure
content marketing
SEO guidelines / practices
...Thanks

Hi BeytzNet. It would help to know what scale of e-commerce you are curious about?
I think the online retail industry needs some new terms. The brick-n-mortar retail industry has a nice collection of easily understood terms. We all know the difference between a big box store, a mom-n-pop shop, a franchise, a boutique, a chain store, a convenience store, and a resale shop.
But online retail seems to just have "e-commerce sites". An online store with 50,000 products is a whole different beast than an online store with 50 products (or at least it should be) - and they should have different names. Maybe Mega-e-commerce for the 50,000 item store, and Micro-e-commerce for the 50 item store. Then we could fill the gaps with Mini-e-commerce for the 500 item stores and Middle-e-commerce for the 5000 item guys.
And boy is it hard to find good e-commerce systems for the 50 item stores. Something like Magneto or BigCommerce is overkill. But systems that are friendly to Micro and Mini-e-commerce are out there if you dig deep enough.

Both of these examples posted have rather terrible duplicate content issues, both internally and externally. As duplicate content is possibly one of the biggest onsite SEO issues with eCommere site, these aren't particular great examples in that regard.
e.g:
-
Zappos.com by far.
Especially their technical side of dishing out images/content at an incredible speed. Their architecture is amazing.

Personally I do not mind this website here http://www.theiconic.com.au they are pretty switched on from an SEO & eCommerce point of view and user testing ect, some things I would change yet they have a good basis for what you are asking.
I mean most of the bigger sites like Amazon ect they are legacy so things need to be changed over time, I would look at new eCommerce sites which have been built up from the ground up with SEO in mind. Usually this is not the case and it involved fixing things over time/ adding on things

Site Redesign Leads Dropped
One of my clients recently had his site redesigned. He wanted to change the design completely, I did offer advice on aspects relating to the redesign, I think its fair to say that he didn't follow all of my advice. PPC still running as usual and rankings still OK but the leads have gone down. Most of the leads come via the phone. I have suggested a number of ways to establish what has gone wrong including surveying his existing customers, comparing old and new designs etc...The client isn't keen on these methods. I'm hoping someone has some direct experience and can offer some direction as to how best to proceed? Justin

Can using the Google Keywords tool and/or SEOmoz cause problems for my company's IP address?
I just started with a company a few weeks back, working on-site doing SEO work. I've been using SEOmoz as well as Google Adwords' Keywords tool. I just got a message from one of our reps saying that people at the office (and this is a huge office) have reported tons of CAPTCHAs being thrown up frequently. I told them I had been running searches with Google Keywords tool and SEOmoz, but would that really cause that much of a problem? Is there anything I can do in order to fix this, some keyword finders that won't get me in trouble, etc.?

Setting Up Ecommerce Tracking for Google Analytics?
Hello SEOmoz members, this is my first forum post, so i hope that it goes well. my question for today is, How can i set up set up Ecommerce Tracking for Google Analytics, if my website Does NOT use a Shopping Cart tool? I am currently SEO'ing a couple of Translation Service websites, and the Ordering System is a little different from the regular Shopping Cart tool that you would normally find on a Product website. so far i have added the analytics code to all the pages so i can track my SEO efforts, but is there no way to track the sales from each visitor if the website only provides Quotes? the website has a Quote form setup into 3 steps, and at the end of step 3, a general price is generated for the visitor and a CSR is supposed to contact them to completete the order. we can normally see the total orders and clients in our own system, but does anyone have any way to combine SEO with this information, like how google analytics Ecommerce can? if anyone could provide any helpful information, i would be very Greatful. thank you!

Can fun, slightly unprofessional text be good for conversion rates?
I operate on a freemium model. The three plans are currently called "Free", "Gold" and "Platinum". Besides being incredibly square and boring, these titles are also meaningless. I'm doing a slight redesign of my site, and the new (unreleased) site has a very fun, playful feel. I'm also trying to make everything more streamlined and obvious. I'm considering renaming the three plans "Boring Amateur", "Kick-Ass Amateur" and "Bona Fide Professional" on the registration page and simply "Boring", "Kick-Ass" and "Professional" elsewhere. There are lots of places on the site where I have to refer to "amateurs" vs "professionals" - these tags would make that easier to explain. Easier = more sales. What do you think about using unprofessional text like this? Is it too risky, possibly offending too many people and losing sales? Or is it a good eye-catcher? I know the best answer is "test it." But this is one of those changes that I don't want to have to put my users through too many times. Thanks for any thoughts!

Which Survey Tools Have You Used? (or know of?)
I'm looking for a website survey tool so I can get more targeted feedback from my users. I've looked at a few (4Q, KISSInsights) so far but I think I might need something more robust. There are specific actions that users are taking on our websites that we would like to investigate deeper so I need a tool that can either only survey users who perform that action (users who bounce, users who enter via a specific page, users who visit a landing page but don't convert, etc) or at least let me segment after the fact so I can identify feedback from a specific type of user. I would appreciate any specific tools that you know of that can accomplish this type of targeting. You don't even need to describe it, just provide a link and I'll give you a thumbs up. Thanks

Lookiing for examples of local "small biz" sites with phone or contact form conversion points
Hi Guys, I'm looking for any good examples of small business sites that you've come across that do a good job at converting potential visitors to clients. I'm primarily thinking about service oriented business such as Doctors, Dentists, Salons, Clothing stores, small restuarants, car detailing services, local photographers, etc. I'm just trying to digest other examples and look for new inspirations.
