Ranking without links but through Social Media popularity
-
Does anyone have an example of a web page that is ranking soley through social media popularity and does not have any inbound (website to website) links? I am creating a presentation on SEO and Social Media and it would be great to have an example.
Thanks

Hi David
Great experiment! lol...Thanks for sharing and yes this is what I was looking for.
Have you tried removing the keyword " Gareth Hoyle" from the title to see if it still ranks? Ok I also wonder if this still would have worked if your domain authority was a bit lower..
Thanks for sharing

Thanks Cyrus for getting back to me. I will look into the info you posted.

I had help from the UK seo community doing a Google +1 experiment recently - it's a bit silly but I think this is what you're looking for. http:// [www] davidsottimano [.com] /gareth-hoyle-sexiest-man-alive/ (purposely not a link!). I think it had around 40-50 +1's last time I checked.
Ranks #4-#5 https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=gareth+hoyle&gl=uk
Feel free to use it if it suits you.

Sorry I don't have any good examples of universal organic rankings. You might have better results with personalized rankings, i.e. Google+ posts. http://moz.com/blog/using-google-plus-to-appear-in-the-top-results-every-time-whiteboard-friday
As Christy mentioned, it's very hard to find these types of results in the wild as any page with decent social metrics is linked to by aggregators like Topsy, All-top, etc.
We did do an experiment on this a couple of years ago. http://moz.com/blog/do-tweets-still-effect-rankings

Hi Carla,
Ah, I see what you mean now. Thank you for clarifying. I am revising my own answer to this: "It would be a very unusual case for a webpage to earn links from social media without earning them from other types of web pages as well." That said, I will ask some colleagues if they know of a case study and report back to you!

Hi Christy,
Thanks for getting back to me. I did not express myself well in the question I posted. I am looking for a webpage that ranked only though incoming social media links and not from other webpages. Many well known experts have been posting for awhile that social media will impact your SEO and I agree with this. It would be really nice though to find an example of this. I am trying to find this example so I can do an article about it. Thanks!

Hi Carla, it's extremely difficult to use social media without creating links -- regardless of your intention (see http://moz.com/blog/the-top-4-ways-to-use-social-media-to-earn-links-whiteboard-friday.) This is as close to an example that I know of, though: http://moz.com/blog/life-after-google-is-now-9-pieces-of-advice-on-how-a-new-site-can-succeed-without-search. Hope that helps!

Without inbound links it shouldnt be that possible to rank well with just social media. It is possible to improve or lead with help of it but shouldnt be just enough to be popular and rank well.
If there is some example for it would be great to learn.
Good luck with your presentation Carla

Thanks Rohit
I agree with you but I am looking for a real example. Everyone seems to be talking about this but I need the real example for a presentation I am creating. Thanks!

I don't think Google directly takes social media signals into consideration. More social shares generally indicate better rankings, but it's generally a co-relation: http://moz.com/search-ranking-factors
More social shares = more exposure = more chances of attracting links

Social media signals and their roles in Google rankings
Hello, I keep on hearing that social media signals have a role in the way Google ranks pages and sites, but for now, I haven't seen any hard evidence of that. Like any other company, we have pages on facebook, linkedin, google plus and twitter, to which we post daily. No, there are no clients coming in from social media, so I was wondering if it's worth investing time in adding every day updates, unless those count in ranking on Google. What do you think, is there a link between social media and Google rankings, and how much does this weight in ranking my sites? Thank you

Various question re SEO and social media
Hi all: It is time for my semi-annual “I don’t have a clue” question. Actually it’s questions since there are three although they may overlap. I am confused about the intersection of social media and SEO. A couple of years ago it seemed like one of the better procedures for link building was writing articles and having them published on Isnare, Goarticles Ezine and the like. Now I am not sure if this is effective anymore. It seems like all of the emphasis is being put on social media sites. Not just Facebook, Twitter Pinterest, and blogs, but big ones (that I don’t have a prayer in the world of getting on) such as Mashable, Reddit etc. How are my efforts best served at this point? Should I still submit articles to article directories or should I concentrate on guest blogging (which isn’t so easy if you want a reputable blog) or try something that I can’t even think of? Second, my blog is a Wordpress Blog that is no big deal and probably isn’t read much. It can be accessed either at Wordpress or through my site. It is listed in my Google Merchant Account, but I can’t imagine anyone reads it. It’s about gifts and products that we sell and is not going to stimulate anyone’s mind. Two things here: First (and I don’t know if anyone will know the answer to this) my site is hosted by Yahoo. There is a tab at the top of my site that takes you to the blog, but Yahoo also has some way to integrate the blog with the website. Does anyone know if this will make any difference? Second, the last several times that I ran by backlinks on Open Site Explorer my Wordpress blog has not shown up. It always did previously right at the top. Any guesses as to why it no longer shows? Finally, in the last couple of months I have had a precipitous drop in orders and visitors to my site. The only thing that I have done is to lower my budget for Google Adwords, but it was never that high to begin with and shouldn’t account for the change. Given the holiday season traffic should be picking up but it is going in the other direction. Does anyone know what is happening here and what to do about it? Anyone with really good insights might get a gift certificate from us (is that permitted on SEOMOZ – if not then forget it). The website is www,uniquegiftsanddecor.com. Here’s a thought – buy stuff from us. (ignore if this is spammy). Many thanks. Don

Vibrant Facebook Community around a Business, how to ask for links?
Hello, Helping a friend out with their site: Black Mountain Colorado Dude Ranch. It is an awesome dude ranch (working ranch that has cabins for rent so you can get that 'western experience' without buying a ranch. Yes there are cattle drives). They have a great ~1000k a picture facebook page https://www.facebook.com/blackmtnranch that is fantastic, but I'm completely at a loss on how to get help with our ranking terms from this (as most don't have blogs, websites or any knowledge of what linking is outside facebook). Ideas? tl;dr Asking for links from people without sites is confusing to them, but is there any tips to getting help from them?

Facebooking and Liking - Whis is best SEO practice for Rankings
Hi everyone! , i am a rookie with SEO. I have a very specific question for which i would love to hear your opinions on this. I have a facebook fan page about my company. We try to post quality stuff in regard to the industry we are in. However, we are social people, and i have seen improvements whenever we post more "social" topics such as TGIF, Photos, DIY themes. My question is (Actually two questions) : Is there a direct correlation or metric between rankings and "likes", the size of your facebook community ? If so, which has more power or effect on rankings. Facebook Likes generated from your website , or General Likes of posts within your existing community. Hope to hear from ya! Every advice is good advice. Regards Jesus D Aceromart
