If the order of products on a page changes each time the page is loaded, does this have a negative effect on the SEO of those pages?
-
Hello, a client of mine has a number of category pages that each have a list of products. Each time the page is reloaded the order of those products changes. Does this have a negative effect on the pages' rankings?
Thank you

Hi Kerry,
Masoko has a good point. If the URLs of the page change each time, there will be a different affect than if it's the same URL or you use the canonical tag on them. So, an example would be helpful.
That said, assuming the URL stays the same, then the question is whether the content is just changing order or different content/products are being displayed.
- If the same products are displayed, but in a different order, then you may see some minor fluctuations in rankings because the content is shifting around, but it shouldn't be much. This could affect both the rankings of the category page and the products displayed on the category page. However, since there really isn't any such thing as static rankings, you may not even notice.
- If different products are being displayed every time, then you may see some larger fluctuations, especially if you don't have much other content on the page other than the products. Again, you may see changes in the rankings both of the category pages and the product pages.

Hi Kerri
Does the URL change with each "reload"? ex:
www.mypage.com/page1/index.php?sort=time_remaining&sort_direction
If the pages have different URLs but basically the same content presented in a different way, then you might have a problem.
Can you give us the URLs in question? it might help me/us to better understand the situation.

A very interesting question!
You have to think about that issue more precisely: is the whole content of the site changing? Or is just a section of this page rotating?
If there is rotation of a section only, this won`t do your site any harm but if the whole content changes every time the site is opened / re-loaded, then this might cause some problems.
You have to give this site one static component, even if it`s just the title of the page and 2 or 3 short introductional sentences which do not change so frequently. Put them at the top of the page.
If you do so and the rest of the site changes, then the worst case would be that Google will change the descriptive text while displaying the answers on the search queries only.
It might also be a question of how this rotation of products is technical realized?

Introduce customer reviews and ratings onto our product pages
Hi, I'm looking to introduce historical customer reviews onto our product pages but i want an opinion on whether a product page that's indexed will jump from 0 reviews to possible 30+, what if any problems that could arise from this.. For a bit of background, we've been collecting customer reviews/ratings since 2015 on our internal system. I'm only looking to start using feedback from 2020 onwards. The current set up is that the product page will display the latest 30 reviews, on the same page is a link that will take the user to another page where they can review all the customer feedback. I'm using Google Schema to markup the text to ensure it is firstly understood by google and displays correctly too. So back to my original question. Will an e-commerce product page that currently has no customer reviews that is indexed, been seen differently if when the next time it's crawled its found to have, say 30+ reviews? Are there any implications this way? What's your experience? I look forward to reading your feedback.

Product Variations (rel=canonical or 301) & Duplicate Product Descriptions
Hi All, Hoping for a bit of advice here please, I’ve been tasked with building an e-commerce store and all is going well so far. We decided to use Wordpress with Woocommerce as our shop plugin. I’ve been testing the CSV import option for uploading all our products and I’m a little concerned on two fronts: - Product Variations Duplicate content within the product descriptions **Product Variations: - ** We are selling furniture that has multiple variations (see list below) and as a result it creates c.50 product variations all with their own URL’s. Facing = Left, Right Leg style = Round, Straight, Queen Ann Leg colour = Black, White, Brown, Wood Matching cushion = Yes, No So my question is should I 301 re-direct the variation URL’s to the main product URL as from a user perspective they aren't used (we don't have images for each variation that would trigger the URL change, simply drop down options for the user to select the variation options) or should I add the rel canonical tag to each variation pointing back to the main product URL. **Duplicate Content: - ** We will be selling similar products e.g. A chair which comes in different fabrics and finishes, but is basically the same product. Most, if not all of the ‘long’ product descriptions are identical with only the ‘short’ product descriptions being unique. The ‘long’ product descriptions contain all the manufacturing information, leg option/colour information, graphics, dimensions, weight etc etc. I’m concerned that by having 300+ products all with identical ‘long’ descriptions its going to be seen negatively by google and effect the sites SEO. My question is will this be viewed as duplicate content? If so, are there any best practices I should be following for handling this, other than writing completely unique descriptions for each product, which would be extremely difficult given its basically the same products re-hashed. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Can ht access file affect page load times
We have a large and old site. As we've transition from one CMS to another, there's been a need for create 301 redirects using our ht access file. I'm not a technical SEO person, but concerned that the size of our ht access file might be contributing source for long page download times. Can large ht access files cause slow page load times? Or is the coding of the 301 redirect a cause for slow page downloads? Thanks
