Site Not Ranking for Key Term

Question for my fellow Mozers
I have a ranking question that I cannot put my finger on. I have a site (visitplano.com) where the client wants to rank for the keyword "Plano". I can't say if the site was previously ranking for this keyword, but I looked into the basic SEO practices and found that the keyword is incorporated in:
- Domain
- Title
- Content
- There is a lack of internal linking and anchor text within the content
- External links - 1,558
- DA - 46
- PA - 55
Currently, the website does not rank for the keyword "Plano". Could someone shed some light on why they aren't ranking or what I may be missing? I would greatly appreciate your help.

Thank you Patrick
The answer definitely help me understand and look at it differently. Greatly appreciate your response.

flcity15,
The answer could be as simple as "plano" may be wrapped up into so many other variations like "visit plano" "plano cvb" "plano city" "plano, texas" and so on. So, to Google or any other search engine, the keyword "plano" may not be properly segmented out as what you are specifically targeting. Looking in Open Site Explorer, your anchor text is hitting on "plano" for a link, but you have so many others also. This is good, but could be more effective with better links built to that site for that anchor text.
Also, your Home page tagging isn't really saying "Hey, rank me for Plano!". Your title could have another LSI mention and your meta description is extremely long. Work on getting that down to proper character length hitting you main keyword and some variations.
You already can determine who is ranking for "plano", so do a little research on where they are linking to. What content they are using, how they are tagging the site or the page ranking for the keywords and reverse engineer what they are doing to help your efforts.
Hope this was a good answer! Cheers, Patrick

Looking at the current links you have, there are some good quality sites already linking.
How long has the site existed for? A quick check on the domain in OpenSite Explorer reveals it has zero G+1's. It looks like you currently don't have a Google+ page, so the first thing I'd do is create that, then work on getting some more G+1's to your domain.

Google rankings
I have encountered a serious problem with google rankings and the sequence of events goes like this for a high volume phrase. I make changes to the page which gets a score of 98 in Moz and equally good scores in other tools. I resubmit the page to Google for searching via crawl in google webmasters. After about 1/2 to 1 day, the page will be ranked between 30 and 50. Within another 1/2 to 1 day, the ranking goes completely away. This page has much higher scores than pages that are ranked. Other phrases continue to rank OK.

Wrong Page is Ranking
My client is an Ecommerce reseller of a few major scooter brands. We currently rank fifth for a particular brand name but our main brand page isn't the one that ranks. Instead, it's a product page. The main brand page has an A rating from Moz for the desired keyword phrases. Neither page has any backlinks. Any ideas on why our main brand page would be outranked by a product page? What could we do to change this?

Does anyone have any experience in trying to rank for terms that are 100% similar in meaning but different words?
I will be using street signs and road signs as an example to make it clearer. We previously only targeted street signs and then we realized that there is another keyword – road signs - that has twice as much traffic (more competitive too). Now we are trying to incorporate both in our onsite SEO. If you had a similar case - how did you work with this? Did incorporating the keyword help rankings go up for that word? Does adding another keyword to the mix make the rankings go down for the keyword you previously ranked for?

Spanish version of site - best practice?
I need to create a Spanish version of an existing site. My idea was to have the Spanish content switch out the English content if the query string had something like ?l=es. It would also drop a cookie so that all other pages would switch out content as well. I do want the Spanish content to be indexed and rank in the search engines, though. I would include all of the Spanish versions (with the ?l=es) in the site map and link to them on every page with a link to the Spanish version. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this a bad idea? Thanks! Tom

Is it necessary to optimize every page of a site
I recently took over the SEO work for a website that has a limited budget. I'd like to use the resources to get as much as I can for a few pages on the site (keyword research, on-page optimization). Are there pitfalls to not optimizing every page on a site? If so, what are they?

AB Testing - Organic Rank
Hello, Currently We are running an A/B test on a few pages, the footer and the header on our site. I was wondering what is the proper way to do an a/b test so that our google rankings won’t fall and that Google will only index one version at this time? Thanks
