Where are we going wrong?
-
I've been going over all the top ranking factors, running my site through Moz analytics and page graders, just researching the heck out of this, and I'm trying to figure out where we're going wrong.
The site is www.imageworkscreative.com - and we're being outranked by newer sites. We need to rank for terms like web design va, custom web design, web design firm, etc. We publish blog updates on average once a week, and promote those via social media and a few syndication services.
We were using a link builder who wasn't following our instructions regarding competitor backlinks ... pretty sure her work ended up hurting more than it helped.
I'd like to hire a consultant or high-quality link builder to help get things going, for us and for our clients. Any recommendations would be much appreciated, as well as any advice for us in terms of overall issues that need to be resolved.
Thanks!

Few things.
Reason why your title is below meta description? Seems awkward. Put keyword into H1 preferably.
Put more content onto homepage if that is the page you are trying to rank. I aim for 800+ words.
Your link profile foundation is really good. You have a very easy site to work with and can see some pretty good rankings. Main issue is you lack links with the anchor text you are trying to rank. Thats an easy fix for the most part. 51 DA? Wish my clients would have similar clean sites to work with. Would make my life sooooo much easier.
Your content looks like its farmed. Grabbing it from a content farm? Try to create higher quality content and send social signals to it. Also, its best to put blogs + excerpt + date stamp on homepage.
Lastly, you are getting 70/100 in terms of desktop page speed. Have to optimize images, minify JS/css/html. and move JS to footer. I assume your site is hosted in the US? Response time is a little slow so you might consider using a CDN.
I see that you are located in SD, I am in LA. If you want to chat, PM me.

Have you checked www.imageworkscreative.com on Google Webmaster Tools to see if there are any important site messages?
You have a lot of links to your homepage with the exact same anchor text - I notice it's in the footers of your client's websites, which isn't a good idea when it's done to excess. 'custom web design' is one of the phrases and that's a term you mention, so it's possible you've fallen foul of the Penguin update, especially if you had a sudden drop in traffic/rankings.
I haven't used it myself, but this Google Penalty Checker has been recommended by some of my favourite SEOs who work/contribute here at Moz: http://fruition.net/google-penalty-checker-tool/
If you have suffered a penalty there are plenty of online guides on recovering, let me know if you need pointing in the right direction.

Hey Jess,
First of all, I want to say AWESOME website. It looks really great and really has inspired me to update ours to something similar. lol
A lot of websites have been hit in the recent weeks due to the Penguin 2.1 update, especially if they have hired someone in the past to just "build links" for them. Have you noticed this drop in rankings in the last couple months; or, has it just always been like this?
Ahrefs.com is good place to start when checking your links. Just from looking at some of these myself, I notice you have links from a bunch of different sites like germany.paristech.com, phillippines.paristech.com, france.paristech.com, and some other sites in foreign languages. These are examples of links that are most likely hurting you more than helping you.
I would recommend starting by doing a link assessment, removal of bad links, and submit to the Google disavow tool. Once you do that, I would begin focusing on the SEO piece more and begin to build quality links through great content and social media.

Wrong target content within the SERP regarding language
Hi everyone I'm currently under an SEO issue and wish some advices about it. My problem is that, Google doesn't show the great pages within the SERPs regarding the languages. In fact, I translated some content in Italian, German, French etc ... When someone use the branding name of the project to seek out it by google, if this guy is French, German, music or something else, Google shows English version within the results. I in fact would really like google showing the German version for a German guy within the SERP ... I already made properly my hreflang tags. Some tips to repair it? Thanks tons in advance!

Going from 302 redirect to 301 redirect weeks after changing URL structure
I made a small change on an ecommerce site that had big impacts I didn't consider... About six weeks ago in an effort to clean up one of many SEO-related problems on an ecommerce site, I had a developer rewrite the URLs to replace underscores with hyphens and redirect all pages throughout the site to that page with the new URL structure. We didn't immediately update our sitemap to reflect the changes (bad!) and I just discovered all the redirects are 302s... Since these changes, most of the pages have a page authority of 1 and we have dropped several spots in organic search. If we were to setup 301 redirects for the pages that we changed the URL structure would there be any changes in organic search placement and page authority or is it too late?

301'd an important, ranking page to the wrong new page, any recourse?
Our 1,300 page site conversion from static html to Wordpress platform went flawlessly with the exception of 1 significant issue....an old, important, highly ranking page was 301 redirected to the wrong corresponding new page. The page it was redirected to is about a similar product, but not the same. This was an oversight that slipped through. It was brought to my attention when I noticed this new page was still holding the old page's rankings but the bounce rate skyrocketed (clearly because the content on the wrong new page was not relevant). Once identified, we cleaned up the redirect. My fear is that all the juice built up on the old .html page that ranked well has now permanently been passed to an irrelevant, insignificant page. -Is there any way to clean up this mistake? -Is there anything I can do to assist Google in associating the correct 'new' page with correct 'old' page after the wrong redirect was initially set-up? -Am I going to have to start from scratch with the new page in terms of trust, backlinks, etc. since google already noted the redirect? Thanks!

Htaccess Question - Is this the way to go to consolidate?
Hi all, My site seems to have www.xyz.com, http://www.xyz.com, http://xyz.com and other variations! From an old agency doing this. All showing differing backlinks etc. SO I want to merge them so I can just look at one analytics account - with everything combined. I want it just to consolidate all to https:///www.xym.com as the client wants - how do I do this? Does it take long to take effect?? Also I presume in webmaster I'll have to set up the preferred extension? Thanks very much for any advice 🙂

Manual reconsideration request not going away.
Hello fellow Mozzers. I am in need of the support from a knowledgeable community, my brain is hurting over this query and is not providing any answers! So I have got my fingers crossed that someone can spot the issue of why a website I am responsible for has been bumped out of the Google search results. In March this website (www.message me for details.com) lost all keyword rankings and also all brand terms. Action was taken to remove unnatural links as you can see from the timeline below these links have been removed. The manual review request has come back from Google and now seems to indicate the reason for the serps removal is due to 'some or all of your pages still violate our quality guidelines', which makes me think it the website itself as well and links that were causing the issue. So what has happened so far? 9 March - Google Webmaster Tools notice of detected unnatural links to www.message me for details.com 20 May - All 'unnatural' links that could not be removed by contacting website owners were compiled and added to the disavow tool. 29 May - Manual resubmission request submitted. 6 June - The following message received (see end of post): 18 June - updated disavow request submitted - roughly 40-50% links removed. 27 June – Manual review requested. 2 July - The following message received (see end of post): So after reviewing thousands of links and removing any poor-quality links, contacting webmaster and when not ale to remove manually I have added to a disavow list. Although their is a chance I have missed something in the link reviews but I am pretty confident that anything that could be considered spammy as been removed or disavowed. I have also used the tech crawl tool and there are no issues showing up there. I am at a lose as to what is cauing this issue. I need some advice on what steps to take next.. Regards, Colin Google message Dear site owner or webmaster of www.message me for details.com,

What am I doing wrong?
I am trying to do my own SEO for my small photography business. I have been with SEOMOZ for about a week now. My ranking before was about the 4th page for "Houston Wedding Photographer" I have found places to add my link for back-links. I fixed the duplicate page content errors... I had Google re-crawl my site the other day because I felt like I had done a significant job improving the rank. My website has now slipped to the 5th page. What in the hell am I doing wrong? http://www.photogbykelly.com/

Site comparison - what is wrong with me?
www.bcspeakers.com/ vs www.psbspeakers.com/ with the search term "speakers" why does BC speakers show up in around #50-60 and PSB is not in the top #1000? From all metrics on seomoz PSB kicks BC in every area by a large margine! can anyone see why BC is listed for that keyword and PSB is not?
