Does A Low Quality Post With Pagerank Merit Deleting?
-
Hello,
We are cleaning up our low quality content on our website and we are struggling with the idea of deleting blog posts that have a pagerank of 1 or above, but pull in little to no views on the website.
My research seems to indicate that low quality content in terms of pageviews is possibly a negative for our website as a whole.
My dilemma, to delete the pages that hold rank or keep them?
thank you
Mike

thank you, time to clean house in a meticulous manner
-
Maybe you could get the videos transcribed (if they're transcriptionable) and add that content to the page. If you're getting search traffic to the page or to the video on youtube, I don't think I would worry about it. If not, you could put the video on a new url with new meta data and a couple new sentences--or the transcription-- and just let it ride until you can do more with it.
-
Chris,
One last question. Some of our low quality content is has got great quality video and I want to salvage these posts.
Am I right to put them as noindex follow to remove any potential penalties from Google for poor quality content?
thank you
-
Okay, thank you very much.
-
If you think it's low quality based on your standards and its not adding any value to the rest of your site or visitors, it's likely fair game for deletion. From the sound of it, any PR those pages have isn't going toward helping any other pages, so again, I wouldn't put much weight on the PR factor as you make your decisions.
-
Thank you, we are now doing just that, but in the first 2 to 3 years of our 4 year old blog we ran things, well poorly at best.
-
Okay, here is the problem.
We are a 4 year old blog, at one time we had a pagerank of 5. Suffering a manual action, Penguin and Panda we have been on the straight and narrow since 2 years ago. But, are just now realizing we still have problems.
We have 3,000 blog posts, my best guess is 1,500+ should be deleted because of the low quality of the content and the fact that we write and make much higher quality videos than we did before, a stark difference.
I wanted to hold onto pagerank pages for internal linking. I read an article and discovered that pages with pagerank can pass juice when noindex follow is attributed to them. So my strategy is delete anything that does not merit fixing, anything with pagerank that should be deleted, noindex follow until we can fix it?
What are your thoughts?
thank you
Mike

Mike,
Certainly, PR isn't the metric to go by in this! PR isn't necessarily the ideal indicator of quality. Go by the actual things that indicate it, like whether or not the page is getting any traffic from search, any referral traffic, whether or not visitors are clicking through to it from other pages on your site, whether they're spending any time on the page, whether it fits with your brand message and if not whether it can be revised to do so--those kind of things. Even a PR of nul or 0 isn't an indication that something needs to be deleted.
-
My advise would be to remove or improve anything of low quality, even if it has a good page rank/page authority. With search optimisation, I always think about the brand first and holding content of a low quality on your website will not help you in the future. Be sure to always think about content that will captivate, inform and provide value to your audience first.
Perhaps consider improving the content instead of deleting? And if you do delete it, redirect the URL to the most relevant blog post on your website and you'll keep some of that page's authority.

Is good for SEO update blog post dates after update post content
Hello I am updating some posts of my Blog, adding new and fresh content and rewriting some of the existing. After doing that I am thinking to update de post publishing so that I appears on front page of the blog and user can read ir again. But I don't know if it is good for google to change the publishing date of the post that he had indexed 5 years ago. Also I don't know if google will read it again if it is old and see the new changes in order to improve it in search results

The evolution of Google's 'Quality' filters - Do thin product pages still need noindex?
I'm hoping that Mozzers can weigh in with any recent experiences with eCommerce SEO..... I like to assume (perhaps incorrectly) that Google's 'Quality' filters (formerly known as Panda) have evolved with some intelligence since Panda first launched and started penalising eCommerce sites for having thin product pages. On this basis i'd expect that the filters are now less heavy handed and know that product pages with no or little product description on them are still a quality user experience for people who want to buy that product. Therefore my question is this...

Do thin product pages still need noindex given that more often that not they are a quality search result for those using a product specific search query? Has anyone experienced penalty recently (last 12 months) on an ecommerce site because of a high number of thin product pages?0 -
How to content marketing: Should my blog posts link to my sales page?
Hi, I've been doing a weekly blog making sure that each blog post contains my money keywords in the text, sometimes in h2 tags etc. My blog posts never contain any links to my actual sales page. Should I link each blog post to my sale page or is it overdoing it? Will internal linking of all my blog posts to my sales page will improve its page authority or have any SEO benefits? What about using exact match anchor text on these internal links? I couldn't find any resource online about this matter. Thank you for your opinion and help! -Marc

Post penguin & panda update. what would be a good seo strategies for brand new sites
Hi there. I have the luxury of launching a few sites after the penguin and panda updates, so I can start from scratch and hopefully do it right. I will get SEO companies to help me with this so i just want to ask for advices on what would be a good strategies for a brand new site. my understand of the new updates is this content and user experience is important, like how long they spend, how many pages etc social media is important. we intent to engage FB and twitter alot. in New Zealand, not too many people use google+ so we will probbaly just concentrate on the first two hopefully we will try to get people to share our website via social media, apparent that is important should only concentrate on high quality backlinks with a good diverse set of alt tags, but concentrate on branding rather than keywords. Am i correct to say that so far? if that is the principle, what would be the strategy to implement these goals? Links to any articles would also be great please. Love learning. i just want to do this right and hopefully try to future proof the sites against updates as possible. i guess quality content and links will most likely to be safe. Thank you for your help.

Best practice for someone wanting to repost / translate some of your blog posts?
I've been contacted by several sites (a few in other countries) who would like to repost some of our articles on their site. A few of these are in other countries and they would like to translate them in their language. (we have a site about raising a child with Down syndrome so they are wanting to use our info to help people...not "beat us" in rankings, or anything like that.) I didn't know what the best practice on this was. I don't want to get dinged for duplicate content or have someone rank higher than me for my own article, etc. Just curious what the best way to go about this was. I'm also assuming the articles that are translated wouldn't be an issue at all since the content will be in another language. Is this right? Thanks!

PageRank Updates Again
Toolbar PageRank updates seem quite frequent this year. When they did the re-update in July after Twitter stuff-up I thought they were going to settle down for a while. Now in August there is a new one. From what I can see the data is refreshed and the snapshot seems to originate from at least 29th July with the calculated values as recent as 25th July. I wonder why they're doing this and what they are up to...

PageRank Is Zero For Some Reason
Now, I'm not a stickler for pagerank, and actually haven't checked the pagerank of ANY of the sites I own and operate in the last year or two, but one of my cronies noticed the other day that our BathroomGetaways.com websites pagerank is 0, despite the fact it ranks well and gets a decent amount of traffic for a great deal of the terms we target. My guess is that we still just don't have the quality links we need, and we're working on that, but is there anything glaringly obvious that anyone else can see that can be the cause of this? One thing to note, we did take the site offline for 2-4 months or so towards the end of last year and just relaunched it in January of 2011. It climbed right back into the rankings almost immediately after our re-launch, so maybe that has something to do with it?
