Help with ecommerce duplicate pages and SEO advice(magento base site)
-
Hi,
We have a magento build site (www.mokee.eu) and are selling our own branded goods. So far it is a very limited range of products. It's 1 baby crib in 5 variations.
We recently started getting more sales from the site, so I started to look a bit more into optimising our site.
I rewrote item name, created better descriptions, added meta titles and description etc. and subscribed to the MOZ analytics platform to understand a bit better ways to improve things up.
From what I saw we have a big issue of duplicated content because our product pages are the same and only the product colour changes, which is something google apparently doesn't like
However it is important for us that each colour get referenced by google so people who search for grey cot can find a picture of our grey cot etc... Also I was thinking to create only on multi variation page with all colour but when you have only 1 product to sell it might look a bit empty on the site.
1- Do you guys have some advise on how to go round this issue?
2- Do you have any other advise for my site in particular to optimise things and actually do you think i should be worried at all with such a small catalogue?
Thanks

@ ImWaqas @Chris Wilson,
Thanks for the tips. I'll clean the URL to keep what is essencial and tailor it to target audience language ( I guess google adword estimator tools are the right place to go)
For the Meta Title of out cot categorie page I have got
Buy Baby Cot Bed & Cribs | From £65 | MOKEE.EU
For the meta description of the cot category page ** I have got**
Buy an Ecologic Baby Cot |120 x 60 cm | ONLY £65 | FREE DELIVERY | 2 YEARS WARRANTY | 5 Colours (White, Dark Grey, Light Grey, Brown & Pink)>>DISCOVER>>
ANY GOOD??
Finally, where should the keyword stuffing happen then? Product description? meta description, meta title, etc.....
Is word frequency important as well? is number of words important?
Thanks
Sam

Like ImWaqas said, canonical tags should be put in, all pointing to the default or most popular color. As for the URLs, I would avoid keyword stuffing the url with synonyms, try something like this:
http://www.mokee.eu/cheap-baby-crib-scandinavian-minimalist.html
However, you should do some keyword research on your target market to determine which terms are popular for your target audience like baby vs. infant, crib vs. cot, cheap vs. low cost, etc.
Hope this helps,
Chris

First I will try to delete this part /index.php/ and My structure will be
http://www.mokee.eu/baby-infant-cheap-cot-bed-crib-cosleeper-scandinavian-minimalist-5-colours.html
Then I will Write Proper Meta title and description where I will add all different color variations in description to go with highly optimized Title.
For URL''s and Titles You need to target a bit broader and You can put all other keywords in Content of the pages. G reads your content and can easily rank with optimized written content.
hope it helps
thanks

@ ImWaqas,
Thanks a lot!
I'll have a look at canonical URL's and meta description for home page etc...
Fot he URL, I thought it was the place to put as many keywords as possible:-) How would you structure them to be optimal for instance this one:
Thanks

Hi Sam,
You need to add canonical tag to your Different color pages.
To help search engines to understand the duplicate content of your pages you can suggest the preferred version of the URL for each page, using the canonical URL tag, so you should install the Canonical URL’s for Magento module.
Read More https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139394?hl=en
Also, After Reviewing your Website, I saw that you do not have Optimized Meta titles Like Homepage And Also your inner pages url looks too long. I think you need better optimized urls too.
Thanks

What is the Impact of Content Personalization on SEO?
I am using Optimizely to serve personalized experiences to our website users. Is there an impact on SEO ranking? The personalized content is dynamically changed on our website and the URL does not change. Thank you

Will hreflang indication help single language site?
I have read a few articles that say indicating a language per webpage with hreflang really only helps sites that use multiple languages. Although my site is only in English, I see that it is ranking for a few foreign language keywords in Google Search Console (not sure exact traffic but roughly 15% of visitors from Search are non English preferred). My thought is that indicating language will help my single-language site because it will weed out the non-english speakers who are probably bouncing from the site. Overall I am thinking it might improve the quality of my search traffic. Do you think my logic is sound, or is adding hreflang not beneficial to my site? All feedback welcomed. Thanks!

Breadcrumbs for ecommerce site
We are doing a major overhaul on our site, and we have some questions about URLs, breadcrumbs and ecommerce. Currently, a product can reside in multiple categories, and can have multiple URLs based on how a user navigates to the page. We handle this via canonicals, but it's awful for SEO on many levels. O-U-C-H. The main issue is that a product can reside in multiple categories. At this point, Plan A for our overhaul is that a product URL is always going to be www.domain.com/product-name-sku.html/. Neat and clean, and avoids end-user confusion if they navigate to the product through a category that doesn't match the URL. Plan B: We can anchor a product to a category or subcategory, (www.domain.com/category-name/subcategory-name/product-name-sku.html) but we think that this cuts down on usability as users can navigate to a product through different categories, and the URL may not match the user's navigation. Based on how Google has devalued URLs for ranking purposes, I don't think that there is much of an SEO advantage to Plan B. Am I wrong? A product can show up in multiple categories - for example: www.domain.com/womens-clothing/ www.domain.com/womens-clothing/dresses/ www,domain.com/womens-clothing/dresses/maxidresses/ Category breadcrumbs take care of themselves. What is the best practice to handle the breadcrumb on the product page considering that there are multiple paths a user can take to a product? Options: 1. The breadcrumb on the product page dynamically changes based on how the user navigates to the page. The URL is always fixed as per above, but we change the breadcrumb based on the session. ex: Product: Black Ruffled MuuMuu Home > Womens Clothing > Black Ruffled MuuMuu Home > Womens Clothing > Dresses > Black Ruffled MuuMuu We would be showing Google different breadcrumbs based on how the bot navigates to the page. Are there any issues with this from an SEO perspective as it would seem to provide the better user experience? 2. The breadcrumb on a product page is always fixed. We anchor a product to a category or subcategory and the breadcrumb is always the same no matter how a user navigates to the product. This is simpler from a development perspective, and we are always showing the same breadcrumb to Google. IMHO, this is not as good for usability. ex: Breadcrumb is always: Home > Womens Clothing > Dresses > Black Ruffled MuuMuu regardless of how a user navigates to it. Which way would our ecommerce experts recommend?

Which eCommerce Platform?
Dear MOZ community members We currently run a custom built IIS/ASP/SQL Server system that is starting to fall apart and needs major overhaul. I'm currently evaluating a number of open source eCommerce platforms (Magneto, OpenCart) and would welcome any advice that some of you may have. We are not a major brand, but we have a good name in our field which we wish to maintain and we ranking very well for our top phrases despite not having SEO-friendly URLs amongst other things. I've downloaded Magneto and installed it on a LAMP could server and got it up and running. It looks very flexible, albeit a little bloated and I can concerned that it's a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Do any other small businesses have experience with Magneto? Thanks for your time! andy www.prendas.co.uk

Can trackingcodes in your url be seen as duplicate content or break other rules?
I recently gave ReachLocal control to manage my Adwords campagne. I didnt want "Reverse Proxy" on so I decided to go with the Remote Conversion Tracking. So they track my website in every stap of the way. Therefor I had to place a Javascript on each page. But what worries me are these kind of URL's I see appearing in my Analytics account: /webpaginaname.html?scid+29903&cid=12343&tc+13012316371028544&rl_key=32850e0a2d4499e02a711d0b969044d2&kw+8307565&pub_cr_id=16701148613&dynamic_proxy=1&primary_serv=www.website.com&rl_track_landing_pages=1 Could this be seen as duplicate content by Google? Or could it break any other rule you know of? Should I be worried? Thanks a lot!

Ideal product page conversion/retention rate for eCommerce sites
Hi SEOmoz-ers, I was wondering if anyone has data regarding product page abandonment rate (% of potential customers that leave the site after seeing product pages) for websites like Overstock, REI or Zappos? As you may know the above mentioned sites do an exceptional job with product pages. It would be helpful to know what some of the leaders in this space are achieving in terms of conversion rate. What is your personal opinion about this? Thanks,
