Hi Peter,
Thank you for the additional info. So, do not be worried about earning a penalty of any kind from having directory listings. Citation building is one of the core disciplines of Local SEO and is perfectly fine. Whether you want to pay money for directory listings or stick with free ones is completely up to you. I would thoroughly research any paid directory before investing in being listed on it.Regarding having people review your products - if the sites are a good match for your subject, that can be a good thing. If it's just on blogs that review everything under the sun, it may not be worth the time/effort.

Cheers Andy.
When I do a local search we are listed locally in organic listings and rank well for them also. I also see my competition with rubbish web sites ranking along side me with yell listings.
I will take your comments on board and let you know what I decide and how things go.
Appreciate your comment

Hi
No, just to list me on there yell directory with links to my web site plus optimization to 5 key words. There is a page also what looks like a google places page.
Thanks for your help. Im not a seasoned seo expert but my web site was hit by Penguin a while back while in the hands of seo professionals who I sacked. I have used Moz to learn the ropes in general. My web site is doing very well and Im happy with what I have acheived but still im very wary of paid Links. I think the yell one should be Ok.
Im working with some high page authority bloggers at present to review our services and products. Do you have an opinion on this idea ?

Hi Peter,
I want to be sure I'm understanding something you wrote here:
The last thing I need is to be penalized when I appear several times on page one of google for a local search. ie 1 as yell, 2 as an organic listing, 2 my facebook, 3 places listing
I want to clarify - did Yell offer to build you another website? That would be the only thing that would cause you problems. There is no reason you would be penalized for having multiple directory listings. A branded search for your business should, in fact, bring up lots of citations for your business, including your Google+ Local page, Facebook page, directory listings, etc. There is nothing taboo about this, so I want to be sure I understand what it is, precisely, that Yell offered you and what you think might be putting you at risk for a penalty.
-
Peter - I have tried Yell myself and over 12 months, I never had a single enquiry - Not a one!
You won't be penalised for being in there, but I urge you to put your money into something different. Find something around your niche that people visit, and don't fall for the stories they tell you at Yell. I am in the progress of going through the complaints procedure right now to get my money back. I was warned about this myself and wish I would have listened.

Thanks for the response. This is where I was getting confused. I think Yell.com will benefit me as a local business which has a shop. The shop has a good clean web site which has good links and a good web presence. Both are important but the web site is more important. The last thing I need is to be penalized when I appear several times on page one of google for a local search. ie 1 as yell, 2 as an organic listing, 2 my facebook, 3 places listing
I think they are fighting for business right now and the price is right.

Yell.com is a directory now you may be thinking Google doesn't like directories which is half true. However there are some exceptions here, niche directories that may help the user (e.g the user might find you via the directory) can be alright.
So lets ignore Google for just a second here and think: will a user find you through yell.com? Will you make a return on it from a user finding you through it?
Negative SEO tends to come from competitors building thousands of spammy links so its not negative SEO.
in short:
Yell.com can be great if you think it help help your niche and it alone wouldn't get you a penalty.
Good luck & I hope that helps a bit

Keyword & negative keyword overlap
So I just read your blog on quality score and after reading the negative keyword section I'm a little confused and I need clarification. In that paragraph you mentioned about not overlapping your negative keywords with your active keywords and you used an example of dog food and dog bed. So my question is, if you put the word dog bed into the negative keyword list isn't the word dog the over lap word? Would you ad not show because the word dog is in the active keyword list?

What are the best advertising platforms for B2C?
Recently, Google ads stop being as effective. Same ads, cost, and web pages, but not getting the same results. Our budget is $4500/mo and need to get at least $25,000 in sales before increasing the budget. What ad platforms have you had success with?

Negative keywords on AdWords account, but mispelling in customer query still triggers ad. Possible to avoid?
Ok, So this really p*#%d me off the other day. I've built an extremely comprehensive list of Negative keywords for our trade bookbinding pages on Ad words. Amongst 100's of others, I've also included every City, Town, Village, and County in the UK so our Ads don't get triggered by local search intent. However, we're still getting clicks from searches like this one: **'binding services n worcestr' ** Question: If Google won't assume this is a misspelling of one of our Neg KW, how I can I possibly protect the account from this type of search? Is this something we just have to accept having KW's on broad match mod/ phrase match?

Internationalization without losing SEO
Hi everyone ! For years we've had our e-commerce site targeting only our Brazilian customers, thus our domain name was domain.com.br . We've built a very strong AdWords account with the URLs within this domain and we've got a considerable SERP positioning as well. Now we've also bought the domain.com (without the country extension ".br"), to target international clients. Our plan is to build the site using the following structure: domain.com/en-US/
Paid Search Marketing | | mobic
domain.com/es-ES/
domain.com/en-GB/ and also domain.com/pt-BR/ (for our brazilian audience). We thing that just dropping off the original domain.com.br and redirecting everything to domain.com/pt-BR/ would not be a good move, as we would need to redo all our AdWords campaigns (the domain is different) and would lose all our reputation/quality score. In terms of SEO I don't know how Google would react with the redirects (if we would keep the quality or not). So our plan is to keep both the domain.com.br and domain.com/pt-BR/ working simultaneously, but then there's the problem of duplicate content. Should we use the "canonical" tag and if so, where should we say the original content is? Has anyone been through this before, ie. expanding a country-level domain to a .com with multiple languages, but keeping the reputation gained by the original language. Thanks for any advice!! P.S. - We've also though about setting up the new structure with subdomains such as en.domain.com , es.domain.com, fr.domain.com, but we though it would work better using subdirectories. Any thoughts on this is also very welcomed.0 -
Adwords negative keywords / keyword lists conflicting?
Does any of you had any experience on large 5k+ shared negative keyword lists impacting normal campaign negative keywords in Adwords even if they are not selected on these campaigns? And a second question; does anyone know how selected negative keyword lists can be removed from a campaign? I seem to be able to add them but not to remove them... Cheers!

Retargeting and Display Advertising - Moz data
Hello Dr Moz'ers So we have a new competitor in our market (6 months) that has basically copied our business model 100%, grrrr. We have been in the market since 2008 .This new website is ranking well considering how difficult our market is. This new website is using the re-targeting display advertising and within 6 months his Moz data is showing around 45,000 back links, is this because of the re-targeting display advertising? Is there any link juice from the re-targeting display advertising because the MOz data says the site has 100% follow even though its an image. Cheers

Display advertising
Hi I am considering running display adverts for a products that we are selling. I see there is a range of different sizes available for adverts. Can anyone suggest which size advert is more successful comparatively. Also is it possible to only select different types of adverts available on the display network? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks Pete
