Claiming Google+ URLs?

I have several brands which I am managing G+ profile pages for. These range from established brands with large followings to just starting out. When I try to claim a custom URL for these on Google+, it says to add some extra characters after the brand names to make them unique. I can't find any example of established big brands who have G+ URLS like "+toyotausa24" "+tacobell3" or anything like that. This does not seem to be well documented anywhere. Can someone tell me what the deal is with this feature?
Also what is the best practice for large brands when claiming this? +BrandName1?

I checked with our head of Local, Amber, who I consider an expert and she states as follows:
You don't have to add a special character. It just depends what vanity URL's have already been generated by Google and accepted by the listing manager.
Sometimes you don't have the option of adding characters. You can either accept the vanity URL or keep what you have.I hope that helps you out, Best,Robert

I do sometimes see hijacked G+ pages, or other shady G+ activities, but in my experience flagging it or calling Google resolves the issue quickly. You're always going to have people trying to game the system, just make sure to know how to defend yourself against it.
As for +TacoBellCom, first you would have to have the business named "Taco Bell" and get that verified (good luck there). Then, you'd have to hope that Google lets you add characters to the end of the URL instead of deciding it for you. Then, you would have to hope you were never reported, flagged, or otherwise looked at by a human on Google's end. So, odds are it wouldn't work for too long.
That's not even getting into the legality of trademark infringement.

Here is the other aspect of this that is disturbing to me, Google's implication with this is that other people could claim the same trademarked brand name? So I guess I can go make a G+ page and call it +TacoBellCom and they wouldn't stop me from trying to pass off as the official brand.

Hi, yes you are correct that I'm mainly looking at brands that are not specific to a geographic region. Thanks for your suggestion on branding the URL/domain as an option.
I'd be interested if anyone has any insight as to what drives this. I can find many examples of small companies and brands that were able to claim their brand name (+BrandName) and I have even found examples of companies that claimed keywords instead of their brand names? There doesn't seem to be any connection with company size, followers or online ad spend. The only thing I can figure is the rules used to be different and at some point in time they changed and some pages got in during the window of time when it was different.

William's response around geography is a very good idea in my opinion. I think you are asking about a major brand without Geo qualifier needed. What you can do is what we did with our company drumBEAT Marketing. We are +drumBEATMarketingNET because we are the .net domain.
I have wondered about this from time to time myself so I have also forwarded this to our Director of Local as she is on some exclusive Local forums where we might get an answer better than mine. I will post her thoughts here as soon as she responds but likely in 12 hours.

When I have multiple listings under the same brand like that, I think it's good to add something descriptive at the end.
For example, if you have a brand with 10 locations in 10 cities, then you can make them +BrandLosAngeles, +BrandNewYork, etc.
The URLs are there to make for a better user experience, so adding a number to end of the brand doesn't really help much. Instead, think of a word or two that is memorable, and that makes sense to those who might see it.

Google Indexed Images: Website Vs Social Media
I use Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram to post images that are already featured on my website. I have been following a routine of uploading the images to these social media platforms only after I can see Google has indexed the image from my original site. My website is ecommerce and the product images drive sales more than any other factor. The thinking behind my method was that when these images are posted on Pinterest, Twitter and the various Instagram crawler sites (I realise Instagram images aren’t indexed directly), Google would recognise that the image was already attributed to my website. The ‘duplicate’ image would not therefore be indexed and the originally uploaded website image would remain in ‘Google Images’. After completing various searches and reviewing other Q&A’s on Moz, it seems as though this is in no way guaranteed and images reposted on social media platforms may still replace the already indexed image from the website. I am assuming this is because Google views these platforms as more authoritative than mine. I usually change the image by adding logos, text, backgrounds, borders etc before posting on Pinterest and this seems to have worked most of the time (both the original and ‘amended for Pinterest’ versions are often indexed) but images posted on other platforms are usually identical. Does it make sense to continue with my method or am I shooting myself in the foot by reposting these images on social media at all? I obviously want customers searching for products, who then click on an image, to be directed to my site rather than one of my social media pages or worse, an image reposting site. Additionally, If I post images on social media before they are uploaded to my website (for example to tease a product launch), would Google likely class these images as the ‘original’ and therefore be less likely to index the website version of the image once it is uploaded? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is there a functional difference between the "google +1" button and the "G+"? Has there been any conclusive research done regarding their affect on SEO?
Google used to offer a +1 button but that seems to have gone away in favor of the new google +1 button or the G+ buttons. I am trying to determine which button I should add to pages on our site but since I am most importantly doing it for SEO impact, i want to make sure I add the correct button...if it matters. Thanks

How important is Google Plus - Specifically for B2B Small Businesses?
Our traffic is about 300 visitors a day in a small industrial niche. We have 89 wonderful facebook followers (all friends and no customers) and basically social media is of no interest to our audience. The same is true of all our competitors - we all have twitter accounts, FB accounts etc and they are resolutely ignored by our customers. [For a combination of Industry Sector, Language, Culture, Business Culture and Job Role] That's not the question though 🙂 No one has any Google Plus followers either and no +1's on pages. So if I get 10 +1's on a page will that make any difference? Would 50? Would 500? How much effort should I put in to this? As we are not an e-commerce revenue isn't tied directly to website traffic but there is a correlation. So is it worth spending a bit of time to develop a 'natural distribution' of +1's and then reach out to my contacts to get them to plus 1 me? That is I use lots of different google accounts, with different IPs on different pages at different times and slowly build Or do i just say that this part of the SEO approach is of no benefit and I ignore?

Authorship and Google +
I've got 14 affiliate websites with plenty of original content on each. When I set up Google + last year I of course had the page in my name and then went on to set up separate pages for each site. Actually one page is related to 8 different sites related to golf but broken down by club type. I also have a Wordpress plugin which presents my author bio on my about page for each site. I've filled out all the pertinent information on each Google + page with unique data. OK, when I write a review or blog topic and post it to Google + am I getting the rel = author juice from the sub pages as if I post it to my main profile page? Posting to my Don Bistrow page vs. my golf page?

How are Google Plus pages related to Google Plus Local pages?
How are Google Plus pages related to Google Plus Local pages and what is the best way to join/link them? e.g. if I go to Starbucks Google Plus page https://plus.google.com/117575809843355974839/posts, where can I see their store locations or google Places pages? If I go to a Google Places page from Google Maps - which now takes you to a Google Plus 'Places' page - how is that Google Plus Places page related to that companies main Google Plus page - I can't see a way to go between them. What can Google tell from a video?
I notice that Youtube apparently does kind of an automatic transcription. What can Google tell about a video? Is it comparing text from a voice recognition transcript? Can it take compare the waveform of a video signal and see how different a video is from another video? I'm putting together a variety of videos that are similar for different pages and wondering how much do I have to change for each video. I remember one time I attempted to launch a video that was an exact copy but with a different file name, title and tags and Youtube said, "hey, that's the same video!" Thanks!
