So, blog directories post-Penguin. Thoughts?

How risky is it to submit blogs to directories like the ones found in this list?
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/20-essential-blog-directories-to-submit-your-blog-to/

Put your blog in front of people that are actually going to click through and read it, not to gain ranking. If you still want to submit to a directory, look through the lists provided by SEL and MOZ manually. See if the sites still have a high PR, and how your content will be displayed.

in my opinion - if you know your clients use that directory, you can use it to.
If your clients dont use it, the link is not usefull for anybody there, you are than starting to get links - just to get links and thats the wrong way.I dont see the danger of a pengiun with that special link, but I see the danger in your mind
Dont build links just to get links... -
I notice there's no date of publication or last review on the SEJ post. Things change very frequently in SEO, both in terms of tactics, and in terms of the sites themselves. Things that Moz posted five years ago may now have broken links, or may now be against Google guidelines, even when they were just fine at the time.

Hi,
I wouldn’t put too much trust in the brands (eg Search Engine land and Search engine Journal and so as not all "SEO experts" there know what they are saying. For example the list contains some good reputable sources where it make sense to feature your blog but some are bad.
Now I don't see any danger from Google's Penguin update point of view as you really need to go over board to get filtered by it - so even if you do go for the entire list it won't get you filtered by the next Penguin update but it's a start towards a dark road.
Cheereo.

All those directories are absolutely fine search engine Journal is a reputable publication.
You can also find similar resources here on Moz
however I want to warn you that too much of one thing is not good in SEO so but you need to balance your websites so Google does not get the impression that you are trying to do something to impress just them. And you should not be doing that anyway you should be doing what you feel is best for end-user. If you think your end user will be better off because they found you in one of the directories by all means for yourself one of those directories. If you said to yourself well I just want links and I know no one will ever look for me there than the answer would be to not use the directories.
One last thing Moz, search engine land, search engine Journal are all very reputable publications that that there lists so you are most likely safe no matter what. But I recommend not signing up for every single one of them.
Hope that answers your question,
Thomas

What Should be the URL of third party blog for my website
Hi All, What Should be the URL of third party blog for my website. Lets say if i have a website xyz.com (which provide pest control services in New York City) and I want to create third party blogs on platforms like blogspot, weebly etc so should i create the blog url as xyz.blogspot.com or i can use a keyword in the blog URL such as pestcontrolnyc.blogspot.com? Which URL would be the best as per Google's guidelines. Note: I have already have a blog within the domain as xyz.com/blog/ and i do weekly posting on this blog. But at the same time i want to create 1-2 third party blogs to get some backlinks from other sources.

Migrating blog posts to new site
I'm in the process of setting up a new site for a client, moving them over to WordPress from Joomla. They've got 50ish blog posts on their old site, but none of them have accumulated any external links. Is it worth it to copy them over to the new site for the sake of retaining all that content, or better just to start from scratch?

Guest posts on sites you buy advertising with?
What are your thoughts about the following scenarios. Scenario 1: You purchased a banner ad on a site for $50. Then you notice that the site accepts guest posts and you contribute a guest article which has a followed link. Scenario 2: You pitch a guest post to a blog and they say sure but first pay us $50. You say, I can't pay for links but how about I buy an ad spot for $50 instead in appreciation of you reviewing by submission. Scenario 3: You pitch a guest post to a blog and they say sure but it will cost $50 to be published. You say sure and pay them. Which of these would go against Google's guidelines and be considered a paid link? It seems like they are all buying links to a different degree, but they would all be indistinguishable to Google.

Can you dominate a niche with just guest posts?
Hypothetically, if your competitors in a niche have 100 linking domains from medium authority sites and you were able to publish guest posts on 200 relevant sites with medium authority, what do you think would happen? Would you dominate your competition?

Posting "similar" blog posts to multiple blog sites seems "shady", does it work?
I've read a lot of info here in the Q & A tonight and there was a thread that stated it's potentially a good thing to post content on multiple blog platforms such as: blogger.com posterous.com wordpress.com tumblr.com I've also been trying to figure out how to deal with my blog as a subfolder instead of a subdomain. That research in Q & A clearly indicates that Google treats subdomains basically like separate websites and links from my blog to my main website will not be as valuable if i stay the course with my blog on a subdomain short term. Given that, if the 4 blogging tools above all require the use of a subdomain, then how am I actually taking advantage of the seo value of blogger, posterous, tumblr? In my case my domains would be: steripen.blogger.com posterous.tumbler.com steripen.wordpress.com steripen.tumblr.com Just not adding up to being viable given what I read states these would be treated as new websites, not to mention I worry these posts, even slightly differentiated, would be suspect. Who am I truly benefitting by doing this? Users?

Should we focus on Directory Submissions
When reviewing our competitors links in Open Site Explorer I noticed that many of them have directory links. We are an online retailer of gourmet food gifts. So should we focus some of our link building efforts on directory submissions?

Importance of Directories
Hi there, I just started using the pro tool 6 weeks or so ago. I have done all the on page optimization I can and am starting to think more about building links to my site. What I want to know is how important are directories as part of this link building program? Should I treat doing an audit of what directories we are in, identifying what ones we should be in, and actually signing up for these ones as an important and vital part of the link building program? So basically how important are directories? We are a b 2 b business if that helps.I am kind of assuming directories are (still) important and that we should spend some time on this, but just wanted to get some expert thoughts on directories, approach to use etc etc. I reckon it should be easier than other link building, as we can at least pay a fee and get in the directory, so it’s less a case of someone doing us a favor as other links sometimes seem to be….
