Using new domain in existing website
-
We have already a site and we want to make business in another country. We don't want to make a copy of our site because it requires more resources, but we want to use a different domain because the business will be run by a partner in that country. The idea is to make a folder in our site, www.mysite.com/countryname/ and associate a new domain www.newdomain.com, so when users go to the new domain they see the content under www.mysite.com/country/. Since de www.newdomain.com will use DNS redirection, the current domain won't be seen.
Is this correct from a SEO perspective?
Thanks!

If you're not going to serve the pages from mysite.com/countryname/, then you wouldn't need to put the canonical tags on.
If you are going to serve those pages, but not link to them from within your site, you might want to add the canonical tags anyway, in case people link to the URLs under mysite.com/countryname/, so they'll pass their pagerank along. You should also disallow that directory in your robots.txt, as Google has a way of finding pages and indexing them even if they're not linked to.
I wouldn't expect you to get penalized. I thought from your original post that the Is the content between the sites different? If so you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Many thanks Hildebrando for your quick answer. I don't want to use a 301 redirect because users won't see the new domain www.newdomain.com, instead they will see and navigate the current site www.mysite.com/countryname/. I guess I am right
Thanks!

Hi John,
Many thanks for your answer!
In fact the URL www.mysite.com/countryname/ won't be accessible from anywhere in www.mysite.com. Therefore I guess there's no need to do the canonical thing, well maybe just in case I don't do it right Is this correct?
I understand that search engines won't penalize the site for creating a 'new site' from a existing one, right?
Thanks!

You'll be serving identical content from two different URLs, even though they're on different domains. It sounds like you'll want www.newdomain.com to do well in it's rankings in its country, and it's probably not as important that www.mysite.com/countryname/ URLs do all that well everywhere else. If that's true:
- You should rel=canonical (what's that?) all URLs under www.mysite.com/countryname/ to their corresponding page in www.newdomain.com, so the pagerank will flow to those URLs under newdomain, and you won't have duplicate content issues with the search engines. Google does support cross-domain rel=canonical tags (source).
- For newdomain, set up Google Webmaster Tools, and set it so you're geotargeting that country (source).
- For newdomain URLs, set the Content-Language so other search engines (like Bing) can understand the geotargeting. This can be done in a variety of ways (source). We found it easiest to set it on our HTTP headers.

Hello!
As I undesrtand your question, I don't know if DNS redirection has something about it. Maybe I didn't get your question right...
But, the best way to redirect something is using 301, as it is permanent, and the search engines will crawl it just fine.
Maybe, another way is creating a subdomain for the specific country, like:
Hope it helps! =]

No index for http version of website
Hi, I've had a message from Google search console to say the sitemap for the http version of my site is tagged as no index. As the https version is indexed, do I need to change the http version to be indexed as well? Do I need to keep the http version of the site in search console alongside the https version, or should I remove it? Advice appreciated!

Using Schema markup for Feefo reviews
I am a little confused about whether or not it is ok to use Schema markup with reviews collected through Feefo. We use Feefo to collect reviews from our customers and these get displayed on our website. We get service ratings as well as product ratings through Feefo. My question is: Is it ok to use Schema markup for these? I would have thought they would fall under 3rd party reviews, but this article from the Feefo website seems to suggest that it would be ok to use markup in the way they recommend. Can anyone confirm how Google handles review markup like this? Thanks in advance!

Title Attribute Length + Use
Hi, Is there an optimum character limit for attribute titles like there is for meta titles? On my ecommerce site I am adding about 280 characters product category page headers to succinctly describe what the page is such as in the example below; MENS BRIEFS + TANGAS We stock a range of mens briefs from leading designer brands that offer popular cuts and fabrics such as mens cotton briefs. You will also discover styles that are a little more risqué for those looking for something more daring in sexy mens briefs and tangas. I have added the following [title attribute] to this header text (MENS BRIEFS + TANGAS)so it displays the following title attribute text when you hover over it. My intention behind this is so that it enables me to provide visitors with access (via assistive reading software or hovering their cursor over the header text) to a bit more information, which they my find useful [title attribute text] - Mens briefs and tangas. These are possibly the most common and long established style of mens underwear, yet they still come in a variety of cuts and styles. The common feature amongst all men’s briefs is that they have a full rear panel that partly or entirely covers the bottom. They will have cut away legs, a pouch at the front and are supported with an elasticated waistband. Briefs and tangas can vary in the amount coverage in the side panels around the hips and top of the legs and the rear. The more revealing and skimpier tanga style usually consists of only a pouch at the front that is supported with an elasticated waistband and a minimalist rear, with no side panels that exposes the hips.[title attribute text] Is this too much? Can search engines penalise me for it? Am I using/misusing title attributes? Thanks

Big problem with my new crawl report
I am owner of small opencart online store. I installed http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=extension/extension/info&extension_id=6182&filter_search=seo. Today my new crawl report is awful. The number of errors is up by 520 (30 before), up with 1000 (120 before), notices up with 8000 (1000 before). I noticed that the problem is with search. There is a lot duplicate content in search only. What to do ?

Categories and URL Structure - When to add a new directory?
I've been wondering this for quite awhile so I figured I should just ask. Suppose my website has 5 categories and the url structure looks like: www.mysite.com/category1/ www.mysite.com/category2/ do I also want to create a landing page for the above categories at the same URL depth as the homepage of the site? www.mysite.com/category1.html OR what about: www.mysite.com/category1/index.html Which is a better way to do this? Also, if your site began as fairly small and your 5 categories were your only other pages other than index, about, and contact pages (meaning you really had no reason to create separate directories), then as time passes, you decide to add 3 subcategory pages that would fit into a page: www.mysite.com/category1.html would you add a folder with he same name as the html page, and then rename the html file as index.html and place it into the new folder?

Content ideas for different sections of a news website?
A news website I'm working on has pages for various sectors, much like any major news site (in this case for example - defence, energy, trade & finance etc.). I've been asked to add content of 150 words or more to each sector, containing keywords we're targeting. I can see the value of this SEO-wise but can't see how we can write anything that adds value for the user. I don't want to add some rubbish for the sake of keywords, I want the information to be useful. The best idea I can come up with is to write an overview of the challenges and topics making the news in each sector, perhaps a bit of historical detail - but I don’t think this will add much value from a user-perspective, and it's not something where there will be the resources available to update often (or to provide some 'best on the web' type info). Any other ideas? Or do you think my idea is a great one? ;-)The pages in question are like the majority of news pages; each item with a synopsis and the usual extra things like a poll and 'most read' box. I've looked at other news sites and can't see one that has any extra content in the way we require.Thanks.
