Requesting a Link from a major newspaper
-
Hi,
One of my clients was interviewed by LA Times for an article that came out yesterday. The article is online with the company name but no link. Does anybody have any advice on the best way to get a major newspaper like that to add a follow link? I appreciate any advice!
Thanks,
Clay

Everyone has great suggestions!
It's also important to look at how that publication does links and make sure that you aren't pushing them to do something they won't do for anyone. Recently, I was working with a publication that was happy to link to how-to or further information articles, but did not want to link directly to any brand mentions.

Definitely agree with Ryan - relationships are key!
Beyond that, you can start building those relationships on a small scale by finding the journalist and/or company in question, following them on twitter or linkedin, sharing their content, etc. then continue by providing comments / feedback or engaging in conversations. You never know, they might start remembering you after a while.
Overall, though, working with PR is definitely a win/win in any situation to fostering a natural link earning campaign.

A big part of PR is the relationship--heck that's half of it.. ;^)--so reaching out to the reporter with an email like, "Thanks so much about your great story on Company B. I'm working with them in a PR capacity (ONLY IF TRUE) and am happy to help with any other inquires. Here's the company website (URL) and press kit page (page with photos, contact info, basic stats, approved quotes, etc.) which you can use at any time. If you see anything missing that you'd like on there just let me know. For example, if there's a certain company boilerplate that the LA Times likes to add to these articles, [Company Name, Employee Count, Website, Founded Date,] I can be sure to get you that. Thanks again!"
You get the idea. You're not even asking for the link directly but instead building your relationship with them as a contact. The more you make it as a way to make their job easier, the better.
Again though, only do this in your capacity of PR relationship with the company. If it's beyond your scope and they have a PR person, forward along the article to them and say, "It'd be great if they linked to the company's website! (URL)" That person should already have the relationship in place.

How To Increase Back Links
Our web store, www.audiobooksonline.com has good PageRank (6) compared to some competitors for the keywords audiobook, audiobooks, audio book, audio books. One big difference is that most top ranking competitors have significantly more back links including from .gov and .edu sites. Our domain URL has been on the Web since 1997 so naturally occurring back links likely has run its course. What is the best way to get more back links? Best tool to get back links with?

Obtaining Links from Forums?
How good is a link from a forum? Do you guys know of any forums in the shopping, jewelry, wedding, or fashion industry that accepts links within their signature or within the post? I know some forums are very strict about this and others allow you to add your link as an incentive to post on their forums. Generally, how effective is this in your opinion and any good recommendations of quality forums?

Link exchanges
I have quite a few legal clients and 90% of my clients top competitors are doing 1:1 link exchanges and they have been doing it for years. Other industries Dont seem as prevalent. I am just boggled every time someone says link exchanges don't work, will get penalized, or value is not passed. Its been working for my competitors....Legal SEO's seem to focus heavily on link exchanges. I have yet to do link exchanges, but am about to get started with a resourceful directory of local businesses on my clients site. Some will be linking back, but not all. Fear of penalization is lurking in my mind. Does anyone have any real data on this? Does anyone have an example of doing this properly and an example of how not to do it? I appreciate any feedback you can give. Thank you,

JavaScript is crawled by search engines, isn’t it? Does it mean that links embedded in JavaScript pass link juice?
I wonder If links embedded in JavaScript from an external Website pass link juice to the linked page and thus have a positive effect on google rankings. I read that JavaScipt is craweld. Does it mean that also the link juice is passed? I'm looking forward to your answers.

Will No Follow Links count toward your root domain links for Domain Authority?
I am wondering if no follow links help, hurt, or do nothing when it comes to increasing page and domain authority? I know they are not supposed to pass rank and I have read discussions that some people suspect they still might, but I am wondering if I have a mix of follow plus no follow, will the no follow ones increase the count of the root domains linking to me and help boost my authority? Assuming of course the no follow links are coming from quality sites with high page and domain authority of their own. Thanks.
