2 sets of meta tags in html
-
I use Wordpress for my business website...when I was looking at my html using "source" on Google, I noticed it looks like my site html has 2 sets of meta tags?
www.seadwellers.com is my site
I do not know why, and I am not sure how to get into my html using Wordpress to delete one set? -
Hello Tom,
You answered a question for me some time ago, and i appreciate it. I wanted to ask you, I am a very small business, I do my own site, seo, etc. After being involved with a company that milked me for $...i realized that I can do SEO on my own...I have a great blog, 10,000 followers on Facebook Page, doing ok in basic SEO. I do believe that this kind of has to be done organically these days, as content & linkbuilding needs to be authentic now?
However, I obviously am NOT a professional, I believe my site has some issues and I cannot really deal with them well. For example, my RSS feed is screwed up...http://www.seadwellers.com/key-largo-diving-blog/
I am getting this error message..."RSS Error: This XML document is invalid, likely due to invalid characters. XML error: not well-formed (invalid token) at line 257, column 32"
I have not been able to fix this...and I think I have other on-page SEO isssues that are above me.
Do you offer a one-time service that could address these kind of things? I do not have big budget, but could use a look-over of my page for on-page issues that you could "optimize" for me?
Also, what is you opinion on linkbuilding these days? Is this something you think i can address on my own?
Thank you,
Rob

Hi Rob,
You're more than welcome I'm happy to help.
The only time you would not want to use Yoast for creating both open graph tags and Meta tags on WordPress is if you preferred another plug-in that did it or if you wanted to do something highly customized that really is not necessary most of the time.
No I do recommend using Yoast to create your meta tags as well as open graph tags. These are important and very easy to create using Yoast.
First and foremost Yoast is an outstanding tool for the creating both open graph and meta tags
** All of this is on how to use meta tags they should be used in combination with open graph through Yoast.**
Open Graph how to use it.
You should let Yoast create Meta tags & Open Graph the meta info and instead use "Open Graph", which is schema?
https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/#title-description
Open Graph protocol If the page contains Open Graph properties for the title, image, and description, they will be used for the a Snippet.
<metaproperty="og:title"content="..."><metaproperty="og:image"content="..."><metaproperty="og:description"content="..."></metaproperty="og:description"content="..."></metaproperty="og:image"content="..."></metaproperty="og:title"content="...">
- In order for **Open Graph **to work properly on twitter you will need to validate it in twitter developer here

How to use meta-tags
- Meta Keywords Attribute - A series of keywords you deem relevant to the page in question.
- Title Tag - This is the text you'll see at the top of your browser. Search engines view this text as the "title" of your page.
- Meta Description Attribute - A brief description of the page.
- Meta Robots Attribute - An indication to search engine crawlers (robots or "bots") as to what they should do with the page.

Your question about schema you should use all 3 together
- Because as a form of Open Graph a structured data tool like schema although different may serve the very similar purposes. Here is schema.org 's thoughts on the subject
- https://schema.org/docs/faq.html#4
What is schema and how to use it
You can use schema to tell Google a reference that is excellent for this and has very many fantastic examples is built visible & Seer
- http://builtvisible.com/micro-data-schema-org-guide-generating-rich-snippets/
- http://www.seerinteractive.com/blog/googles-data-highlighter-and-a-view-into-the-future-of-seo/
Create schema you can use
- http://tools.seochat.com/category/schema-generators
- as a plug-in Raven tools makes an awesome tool called schema creator which can be used on the webpage or as a WordPress plug-in
- http://schema-creator.org/wordpress.php
I hope this clears things up and remember there is a place for all of these things on your site. However each serves a purpose which will benefit your site unless you're going to do something really dramatic with PHP Yoast is by far your best bet.
so please keep using Yoast and on top of that you can use schema to.
I hope this helps,
Tom

I understand, thank you kindly for the response I'll remove Yoast option!
-
Thank you Oliver, I appreciate it greatly!
-
Tom, thank you so much for the explanation...to clarify for me, with my limited knowledge...it looks like I should not let Yoast create the meta info...and instead use "Open Graph", which is schema?
Thank you again,
Rob

I hope this is not too long and not confusing.
You're better off having open graph it is a form of schema or Rich snippets is a term Google uses to encompass all elements of schema. seen as how you are a local business and Google uses structured data ( what open graph is) to better understand most websites. you have the ability to show snippets of photographs and text on social media networks as well as in the SERPS (though not as often as it used to be)
** thorough explanation and reference**
Cyrus does an awesome job in this post and the kissmetrics post under it is fantastic as well.

I checked. You are using WordPress Yoast Plugin. But your theme built with that kind of function. Thats why 2 set meta option you are watching. Use Default Theme option and remove yoast option. I think, It will best practice .
-
You have the normal meta tags, probably included by your or the wordpress theme and then, you also have og metatags automatically generated by Wordpress SEO Yoast pluggin. The og metatags are used on social networks like facebook.
I would not worry, it looks ok
More information about og metatags here -> http://ogp.me/

Meta description template - will i penalised? Similar but not the same.
UPDATE to original question: Ok can I also add, as a solution, could I use %%title%% | A Commercial Property Website that deals exclusively with Industrial Property, Land and Investments For Sale or Let across Scotland. In Yoast as a meta description - so the descriptions will have individual titles but the rest the same? Or will I be penalised? This is for the 1000 or so listings, but I'll write completely unique descriptions for the pages? We have taken on the marketing and SEO of a site that we didn't build. After the first crawl report there were 103 errors, 760 warnings and 990 notices. Including a lot of 301s - which I'm confused as is a brand new site. http://www.shedfinders.com/ I've made some changes in the editor to ensure unique page titles so errors should come down. However i wanted to ask advice how best to optimise a site like this ... people come on they list an industrial property and then those in the market to let or sell can browse and then get more details on industrial property they like the look of. So there are lots of listings going on that aren't correctly optimised ... should these manually all have meta descriptions and rewrite headers etc? Ideally the listings would rank themselves in Google - but I'm going to no index some of the other less relevant pages. Keen to hear your feedback. Thanks, Laura

H1 Tags for Articles in Blog Category - confused ;-(
Dear Seomoz community This is my first post here. Until now I was only browsing the Q&A and learned a lot just by reading the existing topics. Since we launched our website with a new design last week I started to heavily use Seomoz to track down missing tags, descriptions and other on page issues. Just out of curiosity I checked the page outline of the Seomoz blog. I was really surprised! Seomoz uses only H1 tags on their blog main page. Each article is wrapped in an H1 plus the blog title. I am a total SEO beginner but until today I was thinking that using several H1 tags on one page is not optimal. We use one H1 tag on our site for the magazine category description (for example http://www.siam2nite.com/magazine ) and then for the articles H2. So my question. Should I change my H2 to H1 for the magazine articles like Seomoz did? Would really appreciate your advise on this Regards, Menelik

Changing Title Tags once Indexed and positioned?
Hello, Would it be wise to change title tags on a page that is optimized and ranked already in google? These are sports pages, and the teams we are targeting are now in the playoffs so we wanted to insert that into our Title? Thanks!!

Canonical Tag for Ecommerce Site
My client has an ecommerce site with over 1,000 products. We have a ton of duplicates because of how their ecommerce system handles product pages. Each time a new product is added, there is a default product page created (/product/12345-product-name.aspx). Each time that product is added to a specific product category, another, separate URL is created (/product/office-chairs/12345-product-name.aspx). The site has over 1,000 duplicates (at least one for each product) because of how the ecommerce system structures URLs. We are unable to have unique content on /products/12345-product-name.aspx and /product/office-chairs/12345-product-name.aspx because both pages pull from the same database. Their webteam informed me that they can't implement canonical tags on individual pages, they must be dynamically added to the site all at once. Thus forcing me to choose all of the default product pages as primary URLs. Both types of URLs are getting indexed and the product URLs that were added to the categories are SEO friendly so I'm leary to eliminate one or the other with a canonical tag or a no index. Suggestions?

Changing url in connection with meta title inconsistency
We run a site, which is a directory type one, where visitors can look for local businesses per city as well (at some point similar to the 'Yelp concept'). Now, we use www.example.com as the homepage, and the www.example.com/city1, where city1 is the capital of our country, is 301 redirected to the homepage, so this is your default setting. When you choose e.g city2, your url changes to www.example.com/city2, and the city value is stored in a cookie. Then, when you leave the session, and return to the site later on, you will see the homepage url, but with your previous choice of city (in case you let cookies be stored). My concern is, that the meta title always contains the chosen city name, so when you return to the website, and you previously used city2, you will now see the homepage url (which normally belongs to city1), but with the meta title of city2 or with any other previously chosen city. Does this mean a problem, and should I always use the correct url, which would be www.example.com/cityX, or this could not cause a problem for me? If it does, would you mind sharing me the exact problems as well? Thanks,

Should I let Google index tags?
Should I let Google index tags? Positive? Negative Right now Google index every page, including tags... looks like I am risking to get duplicate content errors? If thats true should I just block /tag in robots.txt Also is it better to have as many pages indexed by google or it's should be as lees as possible and specific to the content as much as possible. Cheers
