Sizes and numbers in friendly urls - syntax
-
Ok, I'm trying to establish some business rules of syntax for SEO friendly URLS.
I'm doing this for an OpenCart online store which uses a SEO-url field to construct the "friendly URL's". The good news of that is I have total control over the urls' the bad news is I had to do some tricky Excel work to populate them.
That all said, I have a problem with items that have sizes. This is a crafts store so many of the items are differentiated by size. Examples:
Sleigh Bells, come in 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/2" etc.
So far Ive tried to stay away from inch mark " by spelling it out. Right now its inch but could be in.
The numbers, fractions, sizes etc. create some ghastly friendly URL's. Is there any wisdom or syntax standards out there that would help me. I'm trying to avoid this:
www.mysite.com//index.php?route=craft-accessories/bells/sleigh-bells/sleigh-bells-1-one-half-inch-with-loop
I realize that the category (sleigh-bells) is repeated in the product name but there are several 1 1/2" items in the store.
Any thoughts would be useful, even if it's links to good SEO sites that have mastered the myriad of issues with dimensions in the urls.
thanks

I'll have to dig deeper than my local big-box retail store. This is a url from a random screw at Home Depot:
This product exhibits the issue. Product name, size (8 x 2 1/2), style (Phillips, Bugle Head), Thread (Coarse), Point (sharp), Coating etc.

This is a good question and harkens back to original data modeling. Each size item is a different sku. There are modules for OpenCart that will make a "series" record to mask via interface that they are all different records (think click on different color) but in our case they have different sku's, can be out of stock, can even have different prices. The nature of the crafts store is American Indian supplies. So just in seed beads there are five common sizes, up to 200 different colors per size and some of those can have faceted beads or non-faceted (we call them cuts). Add all that up and there are a ton of products that come in and out of stock etc.
That's it generally. My comment about sizes is that there are many many things across the materials (bells, silver broaches, etc.) that are chosen by the buyer by material (brass vs silver) but then by size (1", 1.5" etc.) The size is a key component so since each one is a different "product record" it will naturally have its own URL. All these inches, millimeters, fractions and odd sizes (thread come D, O, OO, YO etc.) it's enough to make one bonkers. I have an SEO url for each product and am looking for input from others thougths before I go medieval on shortening them.
Hope that answers your question.

Some very powerful resources shared by Patrick as always but while I was reading the question several ideas were popping up in my mind.
You are saying you have several different products that are in different sizes. If this is the case, why not you make it one product and in the product section offer the size in the dropdown? #justwondering
In my opinion the best URL structure for you would be domain.com/category/product-name.php
Once you decide what URL structure you will follow, do go through the instruction given by Patrick so that there should be no technical problem with regards to indexing and ranking.
Hope this helps!

Hi John
Okay cool - keep me posted - want to make sure you get to here you need to be! Good luck!

Thanks. I've read many of these but will do so again looking for details on the technical data in the URL. It strikes me that hardware stores (Home Depot and Lowes) must have this issue with screws etc. Will go there too.

Canonical urls - do my web pages need them?
Hello, I'm going round in circles with this issue, so hopefully someone can help... The Moz crawl of my website lists a number of pages as "missing canonical url". The pages are all different and do not have similar content. Do I need to add a canonical url to each page? My agency quoted the following (x referencing this page: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/crawling/consolidate-duplicate-urls) list itemYou would use Canonical URLs if: list item"...you have a single page that's accessible by multiple URLs, or different pages with similar content (for example, a page with both a mobile and a desktop version), Google sees these as duplicate versions of the same page." list itemThis is not the case here and so we would not propose to change anything. We could add Canonical URLs if the client feels that it is critical which occurs an additional cost. Any help / advice much appreciated. Thanks

Size of image for article Schema
Hi, I implemented schema markup for an article and all tested fine and I can see it being fired in preview mode of Google Tag Manager. But when I run the URL which has it applied through Google Structured Testing tool it is not appearing. I have now read that the image needs to be a certain size. For AMP articles this appears to be 12oo pixels wide http://www.thesempost.com/google-changes-image-size-requirements-amp-articles/ But what about non-AMP articles? Does it need to be that big too?

50 Duplicate URLS, but not the same
Hi According to my latest site crawl, many of my pages are showing up to 50 duplicate urls. However this isn't the case in real life. http://www.fortusgroup.com.au/browse-products/rubber-tracks/excavator-rubber-tracks/hitachi/ex-33mu.html is showing 31 duplicate URL. Examples include: http://www.fortusgroup.com.au/browse-products/rubber-tracks/excavator-rubber-tracks/parts/x430.html

http://www.fortusgroup.com.au/browse-products/rubber-tracks/excavator-rubber-tracks/case/cx-75sr.html Obviously these URL's are very similar and I know that Moz judges URLs by 90% of their similarity, but is this affecting my actual raking on google? If so, what can I do? This pages are also very similar in code and content, so they are also showing as duplicate content etc as well. Worried that this is having an affect on my SERP rankings, as this pages arent ranking particularly well. Thanks, Ellie0 -
301 for a Very Long URL
Hey gang, Thanks ahead of time for the help. I have a url somehow that is very very long: http://www.colbysphotography.com/wedding-caterers-knoxville-east-tennessee/Here is an extensive list of wedding venues in the Knoxville and East Tennessee region. If you find that any of these links are not working, that the venues are no longer in business, or have a suggestion for an additional venue (at no charge), please contact Colby. Colby's Photography works hard on keeping this list helpful. I have tried Yoast Premium on a wordpress site to redirect the url but it doesn't seem to keep. I've tried a few other redirect plugins with not help either. I would love some suggestions on this one! Colby

URL spacing help
Hi all, easy question: I have a client URL...example.com/giftbags that has been indexed for a while. Should I change the URL to example.com/gift-bags to separate these words for better KW ranking, or would the change be useless at this point? Thanks, -Reed

Purchased biz with good URL, not sure what to do with it...
First, thanks in advance for any help I can get with this one. My company leads guided hiking tours in national parks all over the West. We purchased a company with a fantastic URL that focuses on our our top revenue-producing park, and they've been in business for more than 14 years, and have had that URL the whole time. Their site is horribly designed and optimized, but they do well anyways. We are absorbing his business into ours for other reasons, but keeping the name as a DBA. I was originally planning on redesigning and optimizing the site, so we'd have 2 websites out there directing people to us. But I'm beginning to learn that's maybe not smart, even if the content is original. So should I 1. continue with a redesign of his site and have 2 sites out there. If so, what's the minimum % of duplicate content I should shoot for? 2. do a 301 redirect to my main website - would that even help or would it nullify the benefits completely? Again, thanks for any input!

URL Rewrite
We are trying to convince a client to do a massive rewrite from all URL's looking like this: "www.company.com/category/categoryId=82374" to something like "www.company.com/womens/jackets/rain" How would you describe the importance and impact of doing URL rewrites to an ecommerce site? What evidence/research can we share with them to convince them it is worth the time and effort to do?
