Is moving text out of the main body field a bad idea for SEO?
-
Hi,
I manage this WordPress website http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk
I've been looking for ways to improve the product template and have come up with the following http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk/product/the-alhambra-fireplace/ - you can see how this compares to the old template http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk/product/the-burlington-fireplace/
Basically I've moved the description copy for the product from the main body to an alternative field and disabled the reviews tab below the product images to give a more compact feel and better use of the space available in my humble opinion!
The client approves too. However I was just about the change all the other products to match this one - but suddenly thought is is wise to move all text out of the main body just to improve the look? I wondered what impact this might have on search.
Any pointers would be welcomed.
One course of action might be to find a new theme that's just a little more accommodating! Or to develop this theme further to ensure the main body copy is displayed where I want it to be?
Regards to the Moz community - thanks for reading.

Thanks for clearing that up and for your swift response!

Hi Nathan
The content is still on the page and readable by search engines. Therefore, your move is totally fine from an SEO standpoint.
Sorry I wasn't clear in my answer!
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks very much for your thoughts Patrick.
I completely agree, I feel sure the new template is better for UX and will hopefully improve conversions. It seems crazy that the main body copy should appear on this theme below the fold, not to the right of the product images.
I think my concern is still that having absolutely no copy in the main body area of the WordPress dashboard could potentially be bad for SEO. I have had to move the text to a field called 'Product Short Description' for it to appear to the right http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk/product/the-alhambra-fireplace/.
If anyone can confirm this one way or the other I'd be very grateful.
Regards,
Nathan

Hi there
From the SEO perspective, I like the new way - especially since there was chatter that Google would discount content that's tabbed or expandable. Now, I have heard (and seen) people with this type of content not seeing any issues or fluctuations with rankings at all, so, it's really upto you on that front - just track your performance. It's just something to consider.
Now, more importantly, from a user standpoint, this is much better because I get the description ABOVE the fold and in an area of the page that historically provides a description. I would be interested to hear if your moving content had any effect on conversion rates - I would image it would.
Next time, I would look into A/B testing any changes on your site to see if you are making the right move. While my gut tells me that your moving the content to it's new position will greatly benefit you from a conversion rate perspective, other changes may call for testing and research.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Phone number for SEO
We have had an interesting question from a client. They have asked if removing their phone number from their website would have an affect on their rankings. Our immediate answer was 'No' but it may affect the Brand, Usability and Customer experience by restricting the methods of contact. This then made us think that perhaps then it could have an effect in the long term. This situation is also complicated by the fact that they do not have a Google Local Plus account for operational, sensitivity reasons (they don't want to openly publicise their address) We believe that there shouldn't be any negative affect but thought we would open a discussion. Thanks in advance for any comments/ideas.

Internal link text
Hi With internal links, should I make sure to always use the same anchor text im trying to rank the page for? For example im having a tidy up and have realised im linking to the same page in multiple blog posts using different anchor text. Whats the rule of thumb here? Thanks Chris

Are Bullet Points Bad For Context?
Cyrus' webinar yesterday got me thinking about the use of bullet points and Google's increasing affection for context and semantics. Because of their brevity, I can see bullet points parsing up context/semantics etc. Some of our competitors (apparently trying to appeal to Google) are writing 2-4 sentences about the product in the desciption section followed by bullet points repeating the same information. They'll also put a few sentences of description at the top of the page above the price and then repeat it below in the description (this is relatively common). I put text in the description section and like bullet points as a shopper because I can quickly and easily see important information - therefore I use them heavily in product descriptions. Is Google smart enough process bullet points and mash together context or would Google prefer content in well written sentences? Should I be frying bigger fish?

Results clustered in blue below the main result
There are multiple results that appear in blue below the main result for a query from a particular domain. For example, if I search 'mobile phones online' on google.co.uk, the result field from www.dialaphone.co.uk shows me multiple results clustered in blue - 'HTC One Silver', 'Samsung', 'iPhone5S', 'Free Gifts'. I am trying to understand what these are, and why these show up. Ideally, I would like the results for my domain to show up in a similar fashion, and am wondering if there is something special that I would need to do in this regard. Thanks

How much SEO value does a fashion site get from bolting text onto the bottom of home page? Does the value compensate for cluttering up a page focused on an iconic image?
Getting ready to launch a completely redesigned site for a fashion designer. Since it is a fashion site, visitors do not need text to describe what the site is about., We are weighing three options: 1) clean design with no text (just images and navigational links), 2) bolting on a couple of sentences of text at the bottom of the page to signal keyword terms to the search engines, 3) following the lead of the top ranking site in the category and adding lots of text to the bottom of the page. Do the SEO benefits justify cluttering up the design by bolting text onto the bottom of the home page, and if so, how many characters of text seem to be the minimum to be effective?

How do Maximize WordPress with 2 SEO Plugins
I have 2 WordPress SEO Plugins, Yoast and All-in-One SEO. I have tried like heck to make them work together, but every time I crawl my site here, I get multiple error messages. My question is, how can I tweak the title settings to avoid having multiple meta desctiptions, titles etc.
