Weird Blog tags and re-directs
-
Hello fellow Digital Marketeers!
As an in-house kinda guy, I rarely get to audit sites other than my own.
But, I was tasked with auditing another. So I ran it through Screaming Frog and the usual tools.
I got a couple of URLs come back with timeout messages, so I checked them manually- they're apparently part of a blog's archive:
http://www.bestpracticegroup.com/tag/training-2/
I click 'read more' and it takes you to: http://www.bestpracticegroup.com/pfi-contracts-3-myth-busters-to-help-achieve-savings/
The first URL seems entirely redundant.
Has anyone else seen something like this?
Just an explanation as to why something like that would exist, and how you'd handle that would be grand!
Much appreciated,
John.

You could always set a no-index rule for the tag pages in robots.txt and then submit all the URL's you want to appear through Webmaster tools using the "Fetch as Google" option. Another thing I would do is to only have the URL's you want to be indexed and focused on included in the sitemap, and the rest excluded. This should cut back on the strange or redundant URL's getting indexed and showing up.
Something like:
Disallow: /tag/or
Disallow: /http://www.bestpracticegroup.com/tag/
Hope this helps!

How to optimize Wordpress.org hosted blogs
I've got a blog I'm working on that isn't self-hosted. I've attached a screenshot of the message I get if I try to install any plugins. I really want to block archive, author, tag, category, etc pages but I can't seem to find a way since there's no server for me to block via robots.txt or .htaccess and I can't actually install these plugins which would give me the ability to do it. Any suggestions? vQfnt

Weird, long URLS returning crawl error
Hi everyone, I'm getting a crawl error "URL too long" for some really strange urls that I'm not sure where they are being generated from or how to resolve it. It's all with one page, our request info. Here are some examples: http://studyabroad.bridge.edu/request-info/?program=request info > ?program=request info > ?program=request info > ?program=request info > ?program=programs > ?country=country?type=internships&term=short%25 http://studyabroad.bridge.edu/request-info/?program=request info > ?program=blog > notes from the field tefl student elaina h in chile > ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=notes%2Bfrom%2Bthe%2Bf Has anyone seen anything like this before or have an idea of what may be causing it? Thanks so much!

Guest Blog Posts (Originally Seen on . .)
We are making a push to get our blog posts featured on other blogs, and bring in guest bloggers. We figured we could just repost a blog post on our blog, and link back to the original post. Obviously this provides some link juice, but do you think it's a bad idea because of duplicate content? Specifically, I'm also a Huffington Post blogger, so I have the option of writing an article, posting it on our site and HuffPo, and linking back to the original to give us links. Any advice?

On-Page SEO of the SEOmoz Blog Section
Hey Everyone My brain isn't working (only had 1 cup of coffee so far - #2 on it's way) this morning and I could use some help. We're creating a blog on a site for a client of ours and I've been looking at the SEOmoz blog for best practices when it comes to the implementation of pagination, canonical tags and noindex. My questions: There is no use of the canonical tag on the main blog page or any of the paginated pages but it is being used on blog post pages. Why not use it on the main blog pages as well? I'm assuming because the blog pages are always changing with different content there is not much point? Paginated pages in the category sections i.e. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/1?page=2 are noindexed but paginated pages in the main blog section i.e. http://www.seomoz.org/blog?page=2 are not. Is this because of a duplicate content concern since the posts in the category sections are in the main blog section as well? If that's the case, why wouldn't the main category page i.e.http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/1 be noindexed as well? What's the reason for noindexing the "Show # Posts" pages i.e.http://www.seomoz.org/blog?show=5 ? I'm assuming another concern of duplicate content? Any insights into these questions would be greatly appreciated and would help with the implementation of our clients blog. Thanks, Ken

Is there a penalty for too many 301 re-directs?
We are thinking of restructuring the URLs on our site and I was wondering if there is a penalty associated with setting up so many 301 re-directs.

Unique Title Tags OR Unique Content?
The content management system for my e-commerce site will not allow me to add both: unique content and unique title tags to each of my product category pages. Since I am forced to choose one or the other...which one is more important for rankings? And please dont answer "get a new CM system"...thats not an option. Thanks
