Is my tracking code incorrect?
-
I inherited a website that has a host of issues. I set up Goal Conversions for lead generation and am getting this URL listed as a Goal Completion Location /l/24672/2014-07-31/b4dg5
I can tell it is a date but have no other insight into what or where this page is. Does anyone have experience with this and can offer a fix?
A related question is how can I find the URL that triggers the Goal Conversion. I tried editing the goal but it doesn't show the URL anywhere. And the Goal Completion Location is sort of a misnomer because it lists the URL prior to the completion.
Thanks!

Update: I determined the Goal Completion Location listed at the top of this thread is a form created in Pardot, our marketing automation platform. Just an FYI for anybody else who sees a similar situation in their analytics.

Hi David,
I agree and have been wanting to do all of this however the limitations of our current site and CMS prevent this from being done. You have confirmed what I suspected so I do value your responses. Thank you.
New site is on track for September launch, thank goodness.

Is your tracking URL set to track that page (URL) in Google Analytics? I would test your forms and CTA's and see where they send people, then make sure you have those URL's set as a custom goal in Analytics.
Your videos should link or pull from somewhere else, and not be pulling from that page. Check your PHP and see if it is pulling from that page as the loading source. Might be that each time a video is watched, it counts as a confirmation.
Also, if that is your landing page, I would put something on there that states that is the confirmation page, such as a thank you note, etc. Hope this helps!

Site was built in-house with a custom CMS. It is PHP and pulls content via js from a plethora of locations many of which I have yet to discover. I never worked with PHP until now. The site structure is duplicitous after several marketing people prior to me had challenges with the CMS and just copied pages including titles and descriptions. I say this to answer David's questions about the platform.
I am nearly 100% confident my goal conversions are misleading due to capturing all views of the long list of videos we have on the site rather than just the one that demos our product with is my way of reporting lead generation. The screenshot below is for all goal completions with the goal location listed and #8 is the one that generated the question.
This link is to the confirmation page after a demo request form is completed. http://www.issuetrak.com/demo_confirmation
I hope this helps. The good news is that we have new site in development.
Edit: I noticed the screenshot didn't work, sorry.

Hi there. In addition to answering David's thoughtful questions, are you able to share the relevant links and/or screenshots with us? Let us know so we can help, thanks!

Sounds like you have an "Issue" that you need to "Trak" down no? Lol sorry, its the first thing I thought of when I saw this post and your profile picture.
What type of site is it? Wordpress? CMS? Joomla? It may be that the new site has bad URL rewriting parameters, so that a normal page is accessable another way. For example in Joomla you can access the seo-friendly version of a page, or the CMS version unless you block / redirect it. ?compenent/blah/bla/randomnumber/page
Perhaps it was submitted through a page like the above url off of a sidebar form or something like that? You can always correct the problem by changing your Goal page URL in Google Analytics. Set it to /thank-you or something that a user cannot access that is also blocked from indexing in robots.txt.
Without seeing the site and analytics it's hard to diagnose, but I think you may have a URL rewrite issue combined with incorrect analytics settings.

Google Analytics Goals - Button Tracking
Does anyone know if there is a really easy way to track a button in Google Analytics yourself? It seems that most button click goal setups involve some use of tricky code and I'm wondering if there is a much easier way to do this that will allow us to simply setup and track certain button clicks as goal conversions in Analytics. Your help here is much appreciated!

Tracking sessions from a sub-domain that is 301 redirected to main domain
Hi, one of my client is launching a new site on a subdomain newsite.brand.com.au but will use a shorter URL on the packaging on their new rang of products to be sold in supermarkets, prompting shoppers to visit xxx.brand.com.au. This specific sub-domain xxx.brand.com.au will be 301 redirecting to newsite.brand.com.au How can I identify and track accurrately all the visits coming from xxx.brand.com.au to newsite.brand.com.au?The visits from sub-domain xxx.brand.com.au will be attributed to direct channel I guess. Is it worth adding GA on this 301 redirected sub-domain xxx.brand.com.au or there another way to identify those visits on newsite.brand.com.au ?

Google Shopping tracking as organic traffic - help!
Hey guys, I have an eCommerce client who sometimes runs Google PLA and Google Shopping campaigns. However, we don't run his AdWords for him, just do his SEO. At the moment, the Shopping campaigns track as organic traffic within Analytics. And I can't see any way to change this! It's so infuriating. How do I change this? Thanks!

Help w/ Google Event tracking w/ new Universal analytics.js
I want to implement Google event tracking after my visitors complete an estimate form. The form provides them an approximate range of costs based on their widget and widget amount. I have the php coding done, but I don't know JS and I need to send an event upon completion of the estimate form. However, all of Google's examples are button click events. How do I send the event upon completing a form if there is no separate landing page? If I have my Google analytics code on the page as well, would simply adding the following the completed estimate code work?

Virtual Pageviews vs. Destination URL for Goal tracking
I am working on setting up goal tracking. Currently when we receive a new signup, the person gets sent to their dashboard homepage and this is not a valuable a goal tracking destination. My suggestion was to build a "Welcome" interstitial page to send a user to when they create an account. Our tech team suggested using a Virtual pageview instead as it is their thinking that a "Welcome" page adds little value. Is there any downside to using Virtual Pageviews with regards to goal tracking?

Using Google Analytics for tracking statistics of the HOMEpage
Hello, Lets say I have a website with the HOMEpage being http://www.page.com. There are various subpages e.g. http://www.page.com/page1, http://www.page.com/page2, http://www.page.com/page3 . Now when I use Google Analytics it gives me all kind of statistics for the subpages shown as /page1 /page2 /page3 ... (relative path). According to this pattern the HOMEpage should be just "/". Unfortunately I can't find "/" in any statistics. Is this normal? Thanks in advance

Tracking 301'd Domains
'ello SEOMozers 🙂 I've been implementing some awesomely search engine friendly 301'd domains for clients and they work great but I seem to have missed the point where I track said domains in some fashion and come here to ask the question --> how are you all tracking refers from 301'd domains that are pointed to your main hubs? Currently our practice in-house is to alias them in our servers then use .htaccess rules to 301 them to the 1 domain to-rule-them-all but Google Analytics doesn't recognize them as different domains with that plan of action and there goes my refer tracking. Is there a super-star way to use the Google URL Builder and combine that with the above plan of action or a better plan? Has anyone else implemented something else more awesome-er that could help a girl out? Much thanks and Happy Thursday!
