I want my website to rank on the first page for a very competitive keyword
-
I am a WordPress designer and can service national clients. I want to rank on the first page for the keyword WordPress designer. This is a highly competitive keyword MOZ gives it a 68% difficulty. I rank locally in nj for WordPress designer nj and a multitude of local WordPress based key words. I rank on page 10 of serps doing a private browsing session. Some of my national competitors rank on the first page with not many links in.
How could i be so low on the serps for the base keyword WordPress Designer but for local WordPress designer nj be number 1 everytime?
What should be my best plan of attack if i want to Rank much higher for this one specific keyword hopefully page 1.
I think this one keyword could increase business greatly so it is a top priority for me.
I appreciate all advice

Sure thing! I hope it helps.

I am only looking to rank for this specific keyword as it has potential to bring national clients. to a hometown Jersey boy!

Hi Donald!
EGOL is spot-on. I just also want to share a couple resources you have access to from Moz that could help. Apologies if you've seen these elsewhere in Q&A; I recommend them all the time.
The first is Cyrus Shepard's "Keywords to Concepts" blog post. It'll give you a really good sense of how to approach your keyword targeting from a topical perspective, rather that scrambling to rank for specific keywords.
The second is the Full SERP Analysis report, which is part of the Keyword Difficulty Tool. You can run it on the keyword you're trying to rank for and see what factors are most likely leading the first-page sites to rank. There's a video on it here.
I hope that helps!

New Jersey is small time. There are 9 million people in NJ compared to 320 million in the rest of the country. If you ask somebody in another state to name three big cities in NJ they will be struggling to name more than one. There are more designers in a few blocks of NYC than there are in all of NJ.
What should be my best plan of attack if i want to Rank much higher for this one specific keyword hopefully page 1.
Build yourself the most awesome WP site that anybody's ever seen. Make it great, fantastic, then give away the template for free. Make twenty other awesome WP sites and give away those templates for free. Write the best blog around on how to do kickass things with WP, allow people to subscribe for free. Make some really useful WP plugins and give them away for free. Show your stuff. Be generous and helpful. Then draw the line at what you do for free and what you charge for. Start getting your name out in front of people by contributing to a few of the most visible and credible designer websites.
Why do all of that? If you want to be The Man for WP Designer you gotta walk the talk.
Competition is tough. Some businesses have one person working to make rain for every person who provides service. Some retailers have one person working to promote the website for every person doing fulfillment. That's how competitive it is.

Page Ranking Incorrect According to Moz
Hello, A while ago I published an article on our blog (HERE) and ensured that it meets all Moz's criteria for a good ranking. Moz scores my article at 96%, which is great. However, Google does not show my link anywhere, even that the target keyword has a difficulty score of 5% only. Any idea why this page is not doing good on Google? The article URL is: https://missionquest.org/how-to-choose-a-missionary-service-agency/ The target keyword is: Missionary Service Agency. Thank you for your help. Mission Quest

AMP pages for a responsive Ecommerce website?
Howdy guys, I'm wondering if AMP is worthwhile intergrating into a responsive e-commerce site? I'm under the impression that the benefits of AMP would be focused around speed, however it may come at the cost of conversion rate if it was to be delivered for product pages, etc. I'm presuming that even if AMP was on every page across a responsive ecommerce site, Google would only display AMP pages in the carousel for news articles, such as on the integrated blog? Any advice would be awesome! Thanks guys 🙂

Optimize Pages for Keywords Prior to Building Links?
Greetings MOZ Community: According to site audit by a reputable SEO firm last November, my commercial real estate web site has a toxic link profile which is very weak (about 58% of links qualified as toxic). The SEO firm suggests than we immediately start pruning the link profile, requesting removal of the toxic links and eventually filing a link disavow file with Google for links that web masters will not agree to remove. While removing toxic links, the SEO firm proposes to simultaneously solicit very high quality links, to try to obtain 7-12 high quality links per month. My question is the following: is it putting the cart before the horse to work on link building without optimizing pages (with Yoast) for specific keywords? I would think that Google considers how each page is optimized for specific terms; which terms are used within the link structure, as well as terms within the meta tags. My site is partially optimized, but optimization has never been done thoroughly. Should the pages of the site be optimized for the top 25-30 terms before link building begins. Or can that be done at a later stage. Note that my link profile is pretty atrocious. My site at the moment is receiving about 1,000 unique visitors a week from organic search. However 70% of the traffic is from terms that are not relevant. The firm that did my audit claims that removal of the toxic links while building some new links is imperative and that optimization for keywords can wait somewhat. Any thoughts?/ Thanks for your assistance. Alan

Google is ranking the wrong page for the targeted keyword
I have two examples below where we want it to rank for the targeted page but google picked another page to rank instead. This is happening a lot on this site I just recently started to work on. Example 1 Googles Choice for key word Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/cl/50/Tires-and-Wheels What we want Google to choice for Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/49/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Other pages about Motorcycle tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/d/12/Motorcycle-Tires We even used the rel="canonical" for this url to point to our target page. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/50/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Example 2 ATV Tires We want this page to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires however google has decided to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/43/81/165/723/ATV-Tires-All that is acutally one folder under where we want it.

What is the best choise for seasonal pages that rank after the season is over?
Hello and thank you for your attention. I am optimizing a travel website and I have a few problems. Every time I get a good rank for a particular keyword the owners take down the page because the offer is over. They also take down the category because the season is over. That is why I loose all the rankings. What is the best option in this cases and how should I guide the whole team that putts offers and new categories on the website? Would a Static sitemap be enough - I do not know what to do as moving a category from the main menu to a sitemap - another page on the website would result in loosing authority - and SERP. Thank you!
