A manager wants change our 800 phone number to use letters instead of numbers. This would involve changing our toll free number, changing phone number on website/blog/quote forms (different platforms) and changing on Social Media, Local and citations.

      i.e. 1-800-GoReds1   versus 1-800-555-5555

Is there any research that shows customers appreciate a Brand Named phone number over simple numbers? It seems it would make using the phone number more difficult except on mobile, where it can be clicked.

I have looked online but have found nothing, but am not sure I'm searching the correct terms.

Like Miriam mentioned - use the real number on citation sources and major offsite areas. The only ways I would suggest using a vanity number on your site is through javascript swapping (think CallRail phone tracking), or by using it in an image with the alt text being the real (non-vanity) number.

I would A/B test with the javascript method on your site. That solution would use a find & replace function depending on the click source (organic, direct, ppc, social, forum, etc), and swap in the tracking number/Vanity number. Test that for a while and compare phone call volumes. I think if you are a local business that would hurt NAP consistency, so that would need to be monitored pretty closely as well to make sure that vanity number doesn't cause damage.

I have a local number listed, so Google local is covered. I am asking about usability for desktop, ipad, tablet. Also how changing the 800 # will affect rankings, if at all. In all our citations that have the option we list both the local number and current 800 # without the vanity numbers. The vanity phone number is a completely new phone number.

          Thank you for your comments.

You can spell out the number and provided as a regular number. As for his phones being able to actually click on the number it will not make a difference aslong as you formatting correctly. e.g p>To make a booking, call tel:+1324-456-7899 Thomas

              Hi Rox,

Great topic! I can only speak to the local aspect of this. Vanity numbers (numbers with letters in them) are considered a no-no when it comes to citation building. Ideally, what you want is a plain, local area code phone number that connects directly to the business. Looks like your current number is an 800 number, which some citation platforms don't support, but at least it is made up of numbers rather than letters. At any rate, if you client wants to use vanity numbers on radio ads or in images on his website, that's fine, but trying to list them as primary numbers on the website or citations can lead to NAP inconsistency, which is a negative ranking factor.

              More on this topic:

              http://blumenthals.com/blog/2014/11/25/guide-to-using-call-tracking-for-local-search/

Just for contrast, here's an article claiming the benefits of vanity phone numbers, but do pay attention to the source its coming from:

              http://hello-operator.softwareadvice.com/want-memorable-toll-free-number-ask-neuroscientist-0414/

Hope this helps and that others will weigh in on use of vanity numbers in environments other than Local Search.

Changing Business Address on Google Profile & Citations

local seo nap change of address tool

Hello, I'm looking to change a business address to a new one on a Google business profile (still in the same area but on a different street). So, I'll need to update all citations and website with the new address - Is it recommended to update the citations & website first, and then change the address on the Google business profile, or vice-versa? Looking to do this as safely as possible without negatively impacting the rankings much. I'm seeing a lot of conflicting information on this. Thanks in advance.

How to optimize landing pages for local search?

                local seo landing pages localseo

I'm trying to understand how to optimize landing pages to appear in local search. For example, if someone in Chicago searches for "plumber", Yelp has a page "Top 10 Plumbers in Chicago." They are generating these pages for numerous business types and cities. I can't see anything on the page or metadata that indicates a geographic location or business type. What optimizations are they doing to get Google to know that it's a page for a specific city and type of business?

                Effective Real Estate SEO Strategies

I am looking to increase organic traffic to our Real Estate website, and am  looking for any suggestions and or feedback as to strategies to implement in this area or even the must-have SEO pages every real-estate business should build. Interested in attracting sellers & buyers, but obviously would love more to attract sellers... The issue with that being you have to outrank the massive sites like Zillow and Realtor. Some ideas I have so far. Building out Neighbourhood pages to rank for people searching for 'Neighbourhood name' Any feedback on this one greatly appreciate. What's {city name} like? {Neighbourhood name} houses for sale What are good areas of {city name} Is {city name} a good place to live? What's {city name} like? What __ are in {city name} restaraunts hospitals beaches colleges How is {city names} weather Thanks guys!

How important is citations for an online business?

If you run an online business, just how important is citation building? Our client does not want to disclose her physical home address from where she operates and the campaign does not consist of any local keywords. Should we then focus on link building and growing the site's DA instead? As well as getting onpage elements optimised. Many thanks in advance for your input!

Spaces between Letters and Numbers SEO question

This is a fun one - Example:  Mercedes Benz is pushing to have all of there vehicle models to coincide with the world branding such as the "C300" is supposed to be "C 300" and the "E300"  is supposed to be "E 300"...  I have a few issues here as when I use Voice Search for "Mercedes Benz C 300"  there is no way (that I know of) to add a space between the number and letter.  In addition, when searching for the "C 300 for sale" Google corrects the text with "Did you mean:  C300 for sale".  I am seeking a way to accommodate both versions of the models WITHOUT adding the both C300 and C 300...etc. to the text on web pages.  OR will Google eventually change the model names over time as Mercedes-Benz regulates the new U.S. naming convention.  Tough question - any thoughts? Thank you for your help -

Is using emoji's in meta descriptions a good or bad idea ? - I haven't seen it used much hence my query

Hello Mozzers, We need to redo some of our meta descriptions as our CTR's are not to good. I've noticed one of my competitors using emoji's which I personally think looks pretty good. They are using the Phone icon and ticks - as calls to action etc However, I can't see hardly anyone else using them on general serps ...so I am wondering , is it a bad idea ? thanks Pete
