Does Universal Analytics auto generate events?
-
Hi Mozzers,
I have been noticing for one of my clients that there are thousands of events generating which I never added a code snippet for ga('send', 'event', 'button', 'click', 'nav buttons', 4);. The code I am seeing instead is following the syntax **PDF FILE NAME.**I don't even use Tag Manager.
So are these auto generated? Label names of files aren't great though so I still believe that adding that piece of snippet _ga('send', 'event', 'button', 'click', 'nav buttons', 4);_can still bring some added value. Do you think it still does?
Thanks!

Thanks for the details!

Nope, as Dirk mentioned, you should probably have a plugin that made this automatically. This is not just a Drupal thing, in Wordpress, the Yoast plugin also makes this.

Universal Analytics is not tracking by default (even in Drupal)- it must have been something that has been set up in the Analytics plugin by your Developer.
If made a mistake in my first answer - you should look for Analytics in the source (and not events) - you will notice a bit of code stating:
"googleanalytics":{"trackOutbound":1,"trackMailto":1,"trackDownload":1,"trackDownloadExtensions":"7z|aac|arc|arj|asf|asx|avi|bin|csv|doc(x|m)?|dot(x|m)?|exe|flv|gif|gz|gzip|hqx|jar|jpe?g|js|mp(2|3|4|e?g)|mov(ie)?|msi|msp|pdf|phps|png|ppt(x|m)?|pot(x|m)?|pps(x|m)?|ppam|sld(x|m)?|thmx|qtm?|ra(m|r)?|sea|sit|tar|tgz|torrent|txt|wav|wma|wmv|wpd|xls(x|m|b)?|xlt(x|m)|xlam|xml|z|zip","trackDomainMode":"1","trackUrlFragments":1},"field_group":{"fieldset":"full"},"scheduler_settings":{"scheduler_local_storage":1,"ttl":
=> this bit of code is coming from the module and is tracking all downloads of the extensions listed (7z,aac, arc....etc)
Hope this clarifies,
Dirk

Hi Dirk,
So this happens only on Drupal ? This confirms that universal analytics doesn't just auto generate events?
I also found all these "event"instances in the source code of the page http://cl.ly/image/1E3p2c051P3E.
Thanks for the 404 heads up!

Hi,
I think that you are using the Google Analytics plugin for Drupal - which seems to track events by default (search "event" in the source code).
You might want to correct the pdf download - it's currently generating a 404
Dirk

Analytics conversion tracking?
Hi One of our clients has a hotel chain currently which currently uses an online booking system which is from a third party. We are keen to set up conversion tracking to track the number of bookings made however are we able to do this if the URL destination is not on the clients website? Or will it be a case of just tracking the number of people who click the link to go to the third party payment site? Kind Regards

Google Analytics showing discrepancy in Geo data
My site is related to UAE and the Gulf region. An year ago, Google Analytics abruptly started showing high incoming traffic from USA (Visits grew from 50k/month to 500k/month) while the overall traffic was stagnant. An year down the line, this has now been reverted back to normal nos and the overall traffic is still maintained. What could be a possible explanation for this discrepancy? Since this reversal has also now boosted traffic nos for other countries, should we rely on this data? Or is it polluted?

Large event site - how should I structure my URLs?
Hi guys, I'm working on a new website which is consolidating a number of existing event sites into one. The existing sites use a variety of URL structures: www.eventsite1.com/events/event-name www.eventsite2.com/festival-program/event-name www.eventsite3.com/event-name This inconsistency has led to issues with tracking category usage properly in analytics - for instance, with eventsite3.com, events fall within categories (www.eventsite3.com/category-name) but as soon as you drill into an event detail page (www.eventsite3.com/event-name) from the category page, the category is lost to analytics. This is compounded when one event lives within multiple categories, as I can't figure out which category is the most effective for a particular event. I've seen other event sites establish a canonical URL for a primary category, display it in the URL (i.e. www.eventsite4.com/primary-category/event-name) yet still let that event get hit via the secondary categories (www.eventsite4.com/secondary-category/event-name). This way, the categories get passed to analytics without any duplicate content issues (i.e. via the setting of canonicals) Basically, I want to make sure that whatever instruction I give to the devs for the new site re: URL structure is correct from an SEO perspective and analytics perspective. Do I even need to worry about having the category in the URL? Can someone please help me with this? Hope this makes sense Cheers

Analytics not tracking traffic from Old Domain Redirect
We've recently 301 redirected one of our client's domains to their new website and the strange thing is, we aren't seeing an increase in traffic in analytics. You would expect the traffic to increase roughly by the traffic volume from the old domain. There were a few hundred redirects and we tested a large sample and the redirects have been implemented properly. Is there something that we did incorrectly in our implementation of the domain redirect? Or is there something else that we need to do in Analytics to properly track those redirects?

Whats 'Other' in Google Analytics (in Acquisition)
When i look in GA under Channels (under Acquisition) 'other' is listed What is 'other' ? I have been told its other unidentified channels as they did not allow 3rd party cookies or surfers were in anonymous/private mode. Other is usually organic traffic that couldn't be identified for the aformentioned reasons. This data is encrypted and available but it violates Google guidelines as they are not allowed to pass personal info//data to third parties so it is automatically filtered. But they are not 'Not Provided' (since that still shows under organic) but is usually/mainly some form of organic visits. Hence Seo can take credit for much of that traffic, is this correct ? Many Thanks

How to filter many cities from Google analytics
I need to filter hundreds of cities from my traffic reports. I've been told that adding them all in this format: |Knutsford|Ripon|Cheadle Hulme|Congleton| and using the 'matching reg/exp from the drop down should do it... Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be working as I can still see cities like London in the results.... Any ideas?
