Linking to root domain or specific sub-site
-
Hello,
When optimizing for multiple keywords, should I try to get links back to the root domain of the company I work with, or would it be better to link back to sub-sites specific to the keyword I am optimizing for? Does 'getting the root up' help all keywords I work with?
Cheers,
Mike

read up on "keyword cannibalization" - it will give you a better view of how you can compete with yourself on keywords.
best of luck!

Total of 10-20. That includes the pre- and suffices. I am using only about 4 base keywords (very competitive though). Thanks for your advice, will target some sub-directories to get those up individually. The root is quite solid already, just was wondering if boosting it up even more would help all other keywords.
-
So you are optimizing 10-20 keywords each with those expansions? if the base keyword is the same you would probably want to minimize this and sectionalize where-ever you can.
ex:
grapes section
free grapes subsection
how to order grapes online subsectiona warning, if you're building sections on those expansions individually you are going to have a tough time building content and earning relevance as you are kind of competing with your own keywords, against SERPS that are targeted with relevant content.
you may be better off just targeting "free grapes" in 1 section with some keyword mix in the content and having 1 good relevant page instead of 10 low quality pages.
hope that helps.

It is a few base keywords with expansions. Basically it is:
keyword
free keyword
keyword online
free keyword online
In this pattern. Overall I am currently going after maybe 10-20 keywords total. It isn't that all links will be going in to root.
And yes, I do mean sub directories. Sorry for using improper lingo.

Mike,
How many keywords are you optimizing for? If we're talking 100's/1000's, I would personally tend to lean towards pointing towards the most relevant content on your site. This will up "time on site" and lower "bounce rate" because the content the user just clicked the anchor text of will be more relevant than pushing them to your home page and having to search allover again. How many times have you clicked a random link only to be pushed to a home page and thought, "Well hell, I'm not going to bother!"
You should have a base set of "core" keywords you can target for your root domain.
Hope that helps,
dan

Hi Mike, when you say sub-sites I guess you mean sub directories or pages like: domain.com/some-page/, so when building links, yes the links to your home page will help the entire domain link metrics, but won't necessary make you rank for other keywords targeted in the sub-pages, besides a site with links coming in only to the home page does not look very natural, you might raise a flag there.
I would advice to build links to your home page and to other important pages of your website that target other keywords.

How Effective Are Links Between The Same Company's Websites With Different Domain Extensions?
Morning! The main competitor of an eCommerce site I'm working on has a total of 31 sites for 31 different countries. Each one of these sites has a different domain extension (.com, .co.uk, .fr, .it etc.), and every single one of these sites' pages links to all the other homepages through a dropdown menu on the navigation bar. When I pop the .co.uk URL (our main competitor) into Open Site Explorer, I'm advised they have a 45,079 links from 475 domains. If I look at 'just discovered' links, most are from their own sites - I guess MOZ picks these up every time a new page is created. Now, these guys are huge in the UK. They rank in the top 10 for pretty much every single search term and, to put it into some kind of perspective, their Search Metrics score is 33,000 compared to our measly 160! Don't get me wrong, they do get some decent links from authoritative sites, but it seem most of their links are from their own sites. How does Google view these? Does my competitor have these thousands of 'internal' backlinks to thank for their current position? I've just checked their .kr URL and this has 12.5 million(!) links from just 450 domains. Do every single one of these links pass equity? Or does Google just look at one from each domain? Thanks, Lewis

What is Followed Linking Root Domains ?
Is it to just have different URLs pointing to my site? I understand that if 1 site posts 5 of my URLs, it only counts as 1. I am just not understanding how I increase this number if link building is now frowned up. Thoughts?

Why does GWT still show some links from a disavowed domain?
We have disavowed a lot of spam links that were pointing to our website. We've disavowed on a domain level and a lot of links have now disappeared on GWT. However, there is a domain that we disavowed where MOST of the links have disappeared in GWT but there are STILL some remaining even a month and a half after disavowing. The disavow file has been sent in numerous times since then with new domains. Is there an explanation as to why some links still remain on this domain even though most of them have been disavowed and removed from GWT?

Footer Back Links Question "Site by built by"
Hi all I design and develop websites for clients within the UK. With each website I build, I always add a link to the footer of the website which links back to my website. I have always used the link anchor text "Site By Jump" but then decided to try to use the link anchor text to our benefit by changing the links across all of our portfolio of sites to be: "Graphic Design by Jump"
Link Building | | yousayjump
or
"Web Design by Jump" In the hope that this helped us rank better for those keyword phrases. Now something occurred to me the day. Most of the websites I build have no relevance to the content on our website. For example, I could build a website for Baby Food and add a backlink to our homepage which doesn't even mention the words "baby food". In some cases, the websites can have thousands of pages, each with this footer link appearing at the bottom of each page. My question is, could these backlinks potentially be seen as black hat or spam to a search engine? I.e. thousands of backlinks from websites that have no relevance in terms of content all linking back to my homepage? Thank you for reading and any advice would be greatly appreciated.0 -

Are links from flash sites worth anything?
I'm building some links right now and spotted an opportunity with a voiceover artists that we used for a marketing video. He posted our testimonial on his site and I plan to ask him to provide a link back. Thing is -- his site is entirely composed of flash content. Does this matter at all? Will this link still count? Thanks!

Multiple same domain links on Open Site Explorer
In doing competitor link analysis on Open Site Explorer, I've noticed quite a few links coming from the same domain listed separately. This seems to be especially prevalent with Google directory listings. For example, I'll see a link to the site from google.hu/...., google.am/..., google.kz/..., etc. In some cases, it will be prefixed with an IP address, followed by the subfolder address. Correct me if I am wrong, but these seem to be all counting as separate root domains that are linking to the site. How is this done? Are directory submissions given to each country's google directory? Does an original DMoz listing get re-submitted to all of these? Just looking for some clarification on this and how it's accomplished. Thanks everyone!
